Crystalline Order On Riemannian Manifolds With Variable Gaussian Curvature And Boundary

    Get PDF
We investigate the zero temperature structure of a crystalline monolayer constrained to lie on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with variable Gaussian curvature and boundary. A full analytical treatment is presented for the case of a paraboloid of revolution. Using the geometrical theory of topological defects in a continuum elastic background we find that the presence of a variable Gaussian curvature, combined with the additional constraint of a boundary, gives rise to a rich variety of phenomena beyond that known for spherical crystals. We also provide a numerical analysis of a system of classical particles interacting via a Coulomb potential on the surface of a paraboloid.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

Analysis and development of a localization system based on Radio Frequency

    Get PDF
This paper presents an analysis on several strategies for location based on Radio-Frequency. The purpose of this study is to develop an infrastructure able to determine the position of a target within an area of 0.1 acres (aprox.11000 ft2 or 1000 m2) with an acceptable precision for the specific task. Along with the analysis of the many strategies and approaches on Radio- Location, this study tries to determine the best solution to implement a working system of location in an easy, secure and less expensive way, a solution able to be used in football field, without the use of large and/or expensive infrastructures like the Global Position System (G.P.S.) network

On the differential geometry of curves in Minkowski space

We discuss some aspects of the differential geometry of curves in Minkowski space. We establish the Serret-Frenet equations in Minkowski space and use them to give a very simple proof of the fundamental theorem of curves in Minkowski space. We also state and prove two other theorems which represent Minkowskian versions of a very known theorem of the differential geometry of curves in tridimensional Euclidean space. We discuss the general solution for torsionless paths in Minkowki space. We then apply the four-dimensional Serret-Frenet equations to describe the motion of a charged test particle in a constant and uniform electromagnetic field and show how the curvature and the torsions of the four-dimensional path of the particle contain information on the electromagnetic field acting on the particle.Comment: 10 pages. Contact lines for fluid surface adhesion

When a fluid surface adheres to a substrate, the location of the contact line adjusts in order to minimize the overall energy. This adhesion balance implies boundary conditions which depend on the characteristic surface deformation energies. We develop a general geometrical framework within which these conditions can be systematically derived. We treat both adhesion to a rigid substrate as well as adhesion between two fluid surfaces, and illustrate our general results for several important Hamiltonians involving both curvature and curvature gradients. Some of these have previously been studied using very different techniques, others are to our knowledge new. What becomes clear in our approach is that, except for capillary phenomena, these boundary conditions are not the manifestation of a local force balance, even if the concept of surface stress is properly generalized. Hamiltonians containing higher order surface derivatives are not just sensitive to boundary translations but also notice changes in slope or even curvature. Both the necessity and the functional form of the corresponding additional contributions follow readily from our treatment.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, RevTeX styl

Outcomes of ventricular tachycardia ablation in patients with ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy: A propensity score matched analysis

    Get PDF
Introduction and objectives: Catheter ablation (CA) is effective in the treatment of ventricular tachycardia (VT). Although some observational data suggest patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) have less favorable outcomes when compared to those with an ischemic etiology (ICM), direct comparisons are rarely reported. We aimed to compare the outcomes of VT ablation in a propensity score matched population of ICM or NICM patients. Methods: Single-center retrospective study of consecutive patients undergoing VT ablation from 2012 to 2023. A propensity score (PS) was used to match ICM and NICM patients in a 1:1 fashion according to age, sex, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), NYHA class, electrical storm (ES) at presentation, and previous endocardial ablation. The outcomes of interest were VT-free survival and all-cause mortality. Results: The PS yielded two groups of 71 patients each (mean age 63±10 years, 92% male, mean LVEF 35±10%, 36% with ES at presentation, and 23% with previous ablation), well matched for baseline characteristics. During a median follow-up of 2.3 (interquartile range IQR 1.3-3.8) years, patients with NICM had a significantly lower VT-free survival (53.5% vs. 69.0%, log-rank P=0.037), although there were no differences regarding all-cause mortality (22.5% vs. 16.9%, log-rank P=0.245). Multivariate analysis identified NICM (HR 2.34 [95% CI 1.32-4.14], P=0.004), NYHA class III/ IV (HR 2.11 [95% CI 1.11-4.04], P=0.024), and chronic kidney disease (HR 2.23 [95% CI 1.25-3.96], P=0.006), as independent predictors of VT recurrence.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Optimized pulses for the control of uncertain qubits

Constructing high-fidelity control fields that are robust to control, system, and/or surrounding environment uncertainties is a crucial objective for quantum information processing. Using the two-state Landau-Zener model for illustrative simulations of a controlled qubit, we generate optimal controls for \pi/2- and \pi-pulses, and investigate their inherent robustness to uncertainty in the magnitude of the drift Hamiltonian. Next, we construct a quantum-control protocol to improve system-drift robustness by combining environment-decoupling pulse criteria and optimal control theory for unitary operations. By perturbatively expanding the unitary time-evolution operator for an open quantum system, previous analysis of environment-decoupling control pulses has calculated explicit control-field criteria to suppress environment-induced errors up to (but not including) third order from \pi/2- and \pi-pulses. We systematically integrate this criteria with optimal control theory, incorporating an estimate of the uncertain parameter, to produce improvements in gate fidelity and robustness, demonstrated via a numerical example based on double quantum dot qubits. For the qubit model used in this work, post facto analysis of the resulting controls suggests that realistic control-field fluctuations and noise may contribute just as significantly to gate errors as system and environment fluctuations.Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, RevTeX 4.1, minor modifications to the previous versio

Mechanisms of Manganese-Assisted Nonradiative Recombination in Cd(Mn)Se/Zn(Mn)Se Quantum Dots

Mechanisms of nonradiative recombination of electron-hole complexes in Cd(Mn)Se/Zn(Mn)Se quantum dots accompanied by interconfigurational excitations of Mn2+^{2+} ions are analyzed within the framework of single electron model of deep {\it 3d}-levels in semiconductors. In addition to the mechanisms caused by Coulomb and exchange interactions, which are related because of the Pauli principle, another mechanism due to {\it sp-d} mixing is considered. It is shown that the Coulomb mechanism reduces to long-range dipole-dipole energy transfer from photoexcited quantum dots to Mn2+^{2+} ions. The recombination due to the Coulomb mechanism is allowed for any states of Mn2+^{2+} ions and {\it e-h} complexes. In contrast, short-range exchange and spd{\it sp-d} recombinations are subject to spin selection rules, which are the result of strong {\it lh-hh} splitting of hole states in quantum dots. Estimates show that efficiency of the {\it sp-d} mechanism can considerably exceed that of the Coulomb mechanism. The phonon-assisted recombination and processes involving upper excited states of Mn2+^{2+} ions are studied. The increase in PL intensity of an ensemble of quantum dots in a magnetic field perpendicular to the sample growth plane observed earlier is analyzed as a possible manifestation of the spin-dependent recombination.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

Aharonov-Bohm-like effect for light propagating in nematics with disclinations

Using a geometric approach for the propagation of light in anisotropic media, we investigate what effect the director field of disclinations may have on the polarization state of light. Parallel transport around the defect, of the spinor describing the polarization, indicates the acquisition of a topological phase, in analogy with the Aharonov-Bohm effect.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Europhysics Letter

How to determine local elastic properties of lipid bilayer membranes from atomic-force-microscope measurements: A theoretical analysis

Measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM) offer a direct way to probe elastic properties of lipid bilayer membranes locally: provided the underlying stress-strain relation is known, material parameters such as surface tension or bending rigidity may be deduced. In a recent experiment a pore-spanning membrane was poked with an AFM tip, yielding a linear behavior of the force-indentation curves. A theoretical model for this case is presented here which describes these curves in the framework of Helfrich theory. The linear behavior of the measurements is reproduced if one neglects the influence of adhesion between tip and membrane. Including it via an adhesion balance changes the situation significantly: force-distance curves cease to be linear, hysteresis and nonzero detachment forces can show up. The characteristics of this rich scenario are discussed in detail in this article.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, REVTeX4 style. New version corresponds to the one accepted by PRE.
