Effect of agro-climatic conditions on near infrared spectra of extra virgin olive oils

Authentication of extra virgin olive oil requires fast and cost-effective analytical procedures, such as near infrared spectroscopy. Multivariate analysis and chemometrics have been successfully applied in several papers to gather qualitative and quantitative information of extra virgin olive oils from near infrared spectra. Moreover, there are many examples in the literature analysing the effect of agro-climatic conditions on food content, in general, and in olive oil components, in particular. But the majority of these studies considered a factor, a non-numerical variable, containing this meteorological information. The present work uses all the agro-climatic data with the aim of highlighting the linear relationships between them and the near infrared spectra. The study begins with a graphical motivation, continues with a bivariate analysis and, finally, applies redundancy analysis to extend and confirm the previous conclusions.Peer Reviewe

Plateau insulator transition in graphene

The quantum Hall effect in a single-layer graphene sample is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 28 T. Our measurements reveal the existence of a metal- insulator transition from filling factor $\nu=-2$ to $\nu=0$. The value of the universal scaling exponent is found to be $\kappa=0.57$ in graphene and therefore in a truly two-dimensional system. This value of $\kappa$ is in agreement with the accepted universal value for the plateau-insulator transitions in standard quasi two-dimensional electron and hole gases.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Disease Surveillance Networks Initiative Asia: Final Evaluation

The DSN Initiative was launched in 2007 under the new strategy of the Rockefeller Foundation. The initiative intends:[1] To improve human resources for disease surveillance in developing countries, thus bolstering national capacity to monitor, report, and respond to outbreaks;[2] To support regional networks to promote collaboration in disease surveillance and response across countries; and[3] To build bridges between regional and global monitoring effortsThe purpose of the DSN evaluation in the Mekong region was twofold:[1]To inform the work and strategy of the Foundation, its grantees, and the broader field of disease surveillance, based on the experience of DSN investments in the Mekong region. More specifically, the evaluation will inform future directions and strategies for current areas of DSN Initiative work, particularly in Asia, and will highlight potential new areas of work and strategy; and[2] To provide accountability to the Rockefeller Foundation's board, staff, and stakeholders for the DSN funds spent in the Mekong region

Sexual Assault Training in the Military: Evaluating Efforts to End the “Invisible War”

Sexual assault is an insidious problem in the United States military. In 2005 the Department of Defense (DoD) created the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, which centralizes responsibility for sexual assault training. However, this training initiative has undergone little evaluation by outside researchers. Addressing this need, we analyzed responses from over 24,000 active duty personnel who completed the 2010 DoD Workplace and Gender Relations Survey. We assessed whether sexual assault training exposure (None, Minimal, Partial, or Comprehensive) predicted accurate knowledge of sexual assault resources and protocols. Using a social‐ecological framework, we investigated whether institutional and individual factors influenced Service members’ training exposure and judgment of training effectiveness. According to our results, exposure to comprehensive training predicted lower sexual assault incidence and superior knowledge. However, comprehensive training differed as a function of military branch, rank, gender, and sexual assault history. Judgments of training effectiveness also varied across these dimensions. Our results highlight the importance of considering context, gender, and victimization history when evaluating institutional efforts to end sexual violence. The DoD’s 2010 annual report on military sexual assault concluded that “most Active Duty members receive effective training on sexual assault” (p. 104). Aquesta experiència es troba adscrita a un Projecte d’Innovació docent de la Universitat de Córdoba anomenat: Desarrollo de un Portal para el análisis de casos reales, realitzat per un grup de professors del Dpto. de Estadística, Econometría, I.O. y Organización de empresas, consistent en l’estudi de les Ciències Estadístiques i el desenvolupament, implementació i avaluació de les alternatives en la resolució de problemes econòmics i empresarials vinculat amb assignatures de grau i postgrau de la Llicenciatura en Administració i Direcció d’Empreses de la Universitat de Córdoba.The aim of this paper is to present a summary of the educational experience of the education in Business forecasting using a virtual platform. The development has been part of a project of educational innovation of the University of Cordova titled: Development of a Portal for the analysis of real cases in Business forecasting, realized by a research Group from the department of Statistics, Econometrics, and Business Organization, consisting of the study, implementation and evaluation of several alternatives in this field, oriented to the resolution of economic and managerial problems. It has been tested with under and postgraduate students in Business administration and economics at the University of Cordova.El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar un resumen de la experiencia docente de la enseñanza a través de una plataforma virtual. La subida de los precios de la vivienda: factores determinantes

La vivienda en España ha experimentado un incremento muy importante en los últimos años. Se abordan dos preguntas que se hacen los compradores: ¿Por qué se han alcanzado estos niveles de precios y cual será su evolución en un futuro próximo? No existe una única respuesta, pues son muchas las razones explicativas de este fenómeno, algunas del propio sector, otras relacionadas con los mercados financieros, además de la renta disponible esperada. Dichas variables se pueden clasificar en dos grandes apartados, según afecten a la demanda o a la oferta del mercado de la vivienda. El "Códice Calixtino" y la admonición contra la simonía. A propósito del sermón "Vigilie noctis sacratissime"

El presente trabajo aborda el estudio de uno de los sermones atribuidos al papa Calixto y conservado en el Liber Sancti Iacobi, en concreto el segundo sermón asignado a la celebración de la festividad de Vísperas del día 24 de julio, Vigilie noctis sacratissime. Nuestra atención se centrará especialmente en la sección dedicada a la admonición contra la simonía. Para ubicar el asunto en la tradición literaria, se hará una exposición sobre los distintos tipos de documentos que abordaron la formación ética y moral del clero. A continuación, se pasará al análisis del texto calixtino para determinar la dispositio del tema, localizar los posibles modelos de los que se sirvió el autor del texto jacobeo y determinar si el tema es un eco o no de la “Querella de las investiduras”
