A comparative study of the estimators for the demand of engineering courses in Portugal
For the purpose of modeling the demand of Engineering Courses in Portugal we analyzed the possible regression models for panel count data models by establishing a comparison between the estimators obtained and then finding the most appropriate ones for our dataset. A precise quantification of the demand for each academic program is facilitated by the rules of access to higher education, in National Contest for Access and Admission to Higher Education, where candidates must list up to six preferences of institution and program. The data used in this paper covers the results of the national contest from 1997 to 2015 provided by the Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science. Multivariate methodologies were performed in order to allow a better understanding of the studentsâ allocation behavior. Magnetic fields and accretion flows on the classical T Tauri star V2129 Oph
From observations collected with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter, we report
the discovery of magnetic fields at the surface of the mildly accreting
classical T Tauri star V2129 Oph. Zeeman signatures are detected, both in
photospheric lines and in the emission lines formed at the base of the
accretion funnels linking the disc to the protostar, and monitored over the
whole rotation cycle of V2129 Oph. We observe that rotational modulation
dominates the temporal variations of both unpolarized and circularly polarized
line profiles. We reconstruct the large-scale magnetic topology at the surface
of V2129 Oph from both sets of Zeeman signatures simultaneously. We find it to
be rather complex, with a dominant octupolar component and a weak dipole of
strengths 1.2 and 0.35 kG, respectively, both slightly tilted with respect to
the rotation axis. The large-scale field is anchored in a pair of 2-kG unipolar
radial field spots located at high latitudes and coinciding with cool dark
polar spots at photospheric level. This large-scale field geometry is unusually
complex compared to those of non-accreting cool active subgiants with moderate
rotation rates. As an illustration, we provide a first attempt at modelling the
magnetospheric topology and accretion funnels of V2129 Oph using field
extrapolation. We find that the magnetosphere of V2129 Oph must extend to about
7R* to ensure that the footpoints of accretion funnels coincide with the
high-latitude accretion spots on the stellar surface. It suggests that the
stellar magnetic field succeeds in coupling to the accretion disc as far out as
the corotation radius, and could possibly explain the slow rotation of V2129
Oph. The magnetospheric geometry we derive produces X-ray coronal fluxes

Robust Estimation for Linear Panel Data Models
In different fields of applications including, but not limited to,
behavioral, environmental, medical sciences and econometrics, the use of panel
data regression models has become increasingly popular as a general framework
for making meaningful statistical inferences. However, when the ordinary least
squares (OLS) method is used to estimate the model parameters, presence of
outliers may significantly alter the adequacy of such models by producing
biased and inefficient estimates. In this work we propose a new, weighted
likelihood based robust estimation procedure for linear panel data models with
fixed and random effects. The finite sample performances of the proposed
estimators have been illustrated through an extensive simulation study as well
as with an application to blood pressure data set. Our thorough study
demonstrates that the proposed estimators show significantly better
performances over the traditional methods in the presence of outliers and
produce competitive results to the OLS based estimates when no outliers are
present in the data set
Weathering the crisis: Evidence of diffuse support for the EU from a six-wave Dutch panel
Political regimes draw legitimacy from diffuse political support. How diffuse is support for the European Union? By focusing on cross-sectional data, the extant literature fails to demonstrate that support for the European Union displays the key defining characteristic of diffuse support: individual-level stability over a time of crisis. I use a six-wave panel data set from the Netherlands to study stability in support for the European Parliament during the 2008 economic crisis. I argue that public support for the European Parliament is highly diffuse. Using three analytical techniques, I find that individual-level support for the European Parliament remained highly stable from 2007 to 2012. These results suggest that in times of crisis, the European Union can draw on mass public support as a source of resilience
The large-scale axisymmetric magnetic topology of avery-low-mass fully-convective star
Understanding how cool stars produce magnetic fields within their interiors
is crucial for predicting the impact of such fields, such as the activity cycle
of the Sun. In this respect, studying fully convective stars enables us to
investigate the role of convective zones in magnetic field generation. We
produced a magnetic map of a rapidly rotating, very-low-mass, fully convective
dwarf through tomographic imaging from time series of spectropolarimetric data.
Our results, which demonstrate that fully convective stars are able to trigger
axisymmetric large-scale poloidal fields without differential rotation,

âChugging along, plugging in and out of itâ: Understanding a place-based approach for community-based support of mental health recovery
Community-based Mental Health (MH) organisations in the United Kingdom (UK) are facing challenges for sustaining in-person service delivery. Without empirical evidence that demonstrates the value of a place-based approach for MH recovery, and the types of resources needed to build nurturing spaces for peer support, community-based MH organisations will struggle to maintain their physical spaces. We present empirical insights from a case study involving interviews with 20 students accessing peer support services at the Recovery College Collective, a community-based MH organisation located in the North East of England. The interview study aims to evidence how a place-based approach can afford MH recovery. We draw from discourses on place-making and interpret our interview findings through an established framework that highlights four mechanisms through which place impacts recovery: place for doing, being, becoming and belonging. We use this framework to structure our findings and highlight key qualities of place for establishing and maintaining MH recovery. Our contribution is two-fold: we address a gap in the literature by providing empirical understandings of how place influences MH recovery, whilst extending previous research by considering the role that place plays in community-based organisations. This is timely because of the challenges faced in securing in-person service delivery post-pandemic, and a shift towards remote service provision models. We highlight key implications: (i) Accessing a physical place dedicated to MH support is vital for people who do not have anywhere else to go and are socially isolated due to their health conditions; (ii) Connecting through peer-to-peer interaction is an integral part of the recovery process, and learning from people with lived experience can inform a place-based approach that best suit their needs; and (iii) Recognising the value of place for MH support, and the resources needed for peer support delivery in the community, will help secure places that our research participants described as lifesaving
Diversity and the Civic Spirit in British Neighbourhoods: An Investigation with MCDS and EMBES 2010 Data
Recently, there has been a proliferation of studies investigating the relationship between diversity and outcomes such as social cohesion and civic mindedness. This article addresses several common problems in this field and, using data for British neighbourhoods, elaborates on the experiences of both white British and ethnic minority respondents. We conclude that, if anything, diversity should be encouraged to cement the integration progress of migrants and foster stronger identification with Britain in the second generation. Deprivation at the neighbourhood level along with individual factors such as fear of crime is a much stronger predictor of deterioration of the civic spirit than diversity. Bridging contacts have the expected strong positive association with cohesion outcomes; and contrary to policy concerns no strong negative impact is observed for associational bonding among minority ingroupers
The beta-Oslo method: experimentally constrained () reaction rates relevant to the -process
Unknown neutron-capture reaction rates remain a significant source of
uncertainty in state-of-the-art -process nucleosynthesis reaction network
calculations. As the -process involves highly neutron-rich nuclei for which
direct () cross-section measurements are virtually impossible,
indirect methods are called for to constrain () cross sections used
as input for the -process nuclear network. Here we discuss the newly
developed beta-Oslo method, which is capable of providing experimental input
for calculating () rates of neutron-rich nuclei. The beta-Oslo method
represents a first step towards constraining neutron-capture rates of

New type of microengine using internal combustion of hydrogen and oxygen
Microsystems become part of everyday life but their application is restricted
by lack of strong and fast motors (actuators) converting energy into motion.
For example, widespread internal combustion engines cannot be scaled down
because combustion reactions are quenched in a small space. Here we present an
actuator with the dimensions 100x100x5 um^3 that is using internal combustion
of hydrogen and oxygen as part of its working cycle. Water electrolysis driven
by short voltage pulses creates an extra pressure of 0.5-4 bar for a time of
100-400 us in a chamber closed by a flexible membrane. When the pulses are
switched off this pressure is released even faster allowing production of
mechanical work in short cycles. We provide arguments that this unexpectedly
fast pressure decrease is due to spontaneous combustion of the gases in the
chamber. This actuator is the first step to truly microscopic combustion
