    AIDS education in schools - awareness, attitudes and opinions among educators, theology students and health professionals

    A project was undertaken in Grahamstown to assess the level of AIDS awareness, attitudes towards AIDS and opinions as to how and whether education programmes for schoolchildren should be planned. Opinions were canvassed initially by means of a questionnaire to three groups of professionals who could become involved in AIDS education programmes: student teachers and lecturers in the Department of Education at Rhodes University, theology students at the local Theological College and health care professionals at Settlers' Hospital. Each group was then asked to attend a lecture about AIDS at which slides were shown of actual cases of the disease and its complications. A slightly modified version of the original questionnaire was then administered after 6 weeks to assess any changes in awareness, attitudes and opinions. The study did not attempt to establish the pennanence ofany such changes

    Split-domain calibration of an ecosystem model using satellite ocean colour data

    The application of satellite ocean colour data to the calibration of plankton ecosystem models for large geographic domains, over which their ideal parameters cannot be assumed to be invariant, is investigated. A method is presented for seeking the number and geographic scope of parameter sets which allows the best fit to validation data to be achieved. These are independent data not used in the parameter estimation process. The goodness-of-fit of the optimally calibrated model to the validation data is an objective measure of merit for the model, together with its external forcing data. Importantly, this is a statistic which can be used for comparative evaluation of different models. The method makes use of observations from multiple locations, referred to as stations, distributed across the geographic domain. It relies on a technique for finding groups of stations which can be aggregated for parameter estimation purposes with minimal increase in the resulting misfit between model and observations.The results of testing this split-domain calibration method for a simple zero dimensional model, using observations from 30 stations in the North Atlantic, are presented. The stations are divided into separate calibration and validation sets. One year of ocean colour data from each station were used in conjunction with a climatological estimate of the station’s annual nitrate maximum. The results demonstrate the practical utility of the method and imply that an optimal fit of the model to the validation data would be given by two parameter sets. The corresponding division of the North Atlantic domain into two provinces allows a misfit-based cost to be achieved which is 25% lower than that for the single parameter set obtained using all of the calibration stations. In general, parameters are poorly constrained, contributing to a high degree of uncertainty in model output for unobserved variables. This suggests that limited progress towards a definitive model calibration can be made without including other types of observations

    Solving the Sports League Scheduling Problem with Tabu Search

    In this paper we present a tabu approach for a version of the Sports League Scheduling Problem. The approach adopted is based on a formulation of the problem as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). Tests were carried out on problem instances of up to 40 teams representing 780 integer variables with 780 values per variable. Experimental results show that this approach outperforms some existing methods and is one of the most promising methods for solving problems of this type

    Life path analysis: scaling indicates priming effects of social and habitat factors on dispersal distances

    1. Movements of many animals along a life-path can be separated into repetitive ones within home ranges and transitions between home ranges. We sought relationships of social and environmental factors with initiation and distance of transition movements in 114 buzzards Buteo buteo that were marked as nestlings with long-life radio tags. 2. Ex-natal dispersal movements of 51 buzzards in autumn were longer than for 30 later in their first year and than 35 extra-natal movements between home ranges after leaving nest areas. In the second and third springs, distances moved from winter focal points by birds that paired were the same or less than for unpaired birds. No post-nuptial movement exceeded 2 km. 3. Initiation of early ex-natal dispersal was enhanced by presence of many sibs, but also by lack of worm-rich loam soils. Distances travelled were greatest for birds from small broods and with relatively little short grass-feeding habitat near the nest. Later movements were generally enhanced by the absence of loam soils and short grassland, especially with abundance of other buzzards and probable poor feeding habitats (heathland, long grass). 4. Buzzards tended to persist in their first autumn where arable land was abundant, but subsequently showed a strong tendency to move from this habitat. 5. Factors that acted most strongly in ½-km buffers round nests, or round subsequent focal points, usually promoted movement compared with factors acting at a larger scale. Strong relationships between movement distances and environmental characteristics in ½-km buffers, especially during early ex-natal dispersal, suggested that buzzards became primed by these factors to travel far. 6. Movements were also farthest for buzzards that had already moved far from their natal nests, perhaps reflecting genetic predisposition, long-term priming or poor habitat beyond the study area

    The development of the theory and construction of combinatorial designs originated with the work of Euler on Latin squares. A Latin square on symbols is an matrix ( is the order of the Latin square), in which each symbol occurs precisely once in each row and in each column. Several interesting research questions posed by Euler with respect to Latin squares, namely regarding orthogonality properties, were only solved in 1959 [3]. Many other questions concerning Latin squares constructions still remain open today. From the perspective of the Constraint Programing (CP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Operations Research (OR) communities, combinatorial design problems are interesting since they possess rich structural properties that are also observed in real-world applications such as scheduling, timetabling, and error correcting codes. Thus, the area of combinatorial designs has been a good source of challenge problems for these research communities.     Background - Generation of physiologically active vascular beds by delivery of combinations of growth factors offers promise for vascular gene therapy. Methods and Results - In a mesenteric model of physiological angiogenesis, combining endothelial nitric oxide synthase ( eNOS) ( and hence NO production) with VEGF and angiopoietin-1 overexpression resulted in a more functional vascular phenotype than growth factor administration alone. eNOS gene delivery upregulated eNOS, VEGF, and Ang-1 to similar levels as gene transfer with VEGF or Ang-1. eNOS overexpression resulted in neovascularization to a similar extent as VEGF and Ang-1 combined, but not by sprouting angiogenesis. Whereas combining Ang-1 and VEGF increased both exchange vessels and conduit vessels, neither growth factor nor eNOS alone resulted in vessels with smooth muscle cell (SMC) coverage. In contrast, combining all three generated microvessels with SMCs (arteriolar genesis) and further increased functional vessels. Use of a vasodilator, prazosin, in combination with Ang1 and VEGF, but not alone, also generated SMC-positive vessels. Conclusion - Coexpression of eNOS, VEGF, and Ang-1 results in a more mature vascularization of connective tissue, and generates new arterioles as well as new capillaries, and provides a more physiological therapeutic approach than single growth factor administration, by combining hemodynamic forces with growth factors
