Microwave burst with fine spectral structures in a solar flare on 2011 August 9
On August 9, 2011, there was an X6.9 flare event occurred near the west limb
of solar disk. From the observation obtained by the spectrometer of the Chinese
Solar Broadband Radio Spectrometer in Huairou (SBRS/Huairou) around the flare,
we find that this powerful flare has only a short-duration microwave burst of
about only 5 minutes, and during the short-duration microwave burst, there are
several kinds of fine structures on the spectrogram. These fine structures
include very short-period pulsations, millisecond spike bursts, and type III
bursts. The most interesting is that almost all of the pulses of very
short-period pulsation (VSP) are structured by clusters of millisecond
timescales of spike bursts or type III bursts. And there exists three different
kinds of frequency drift rates in the VSP: the frequency drift rates with
absolute value of about 55 - 130 MHz s^{-1} in the pulse groups, the frequency
drift rates with absolute value of about 2.91 - 16.9 GHz s^{-1} on each
individual pulse, and the frequency drift rates with absolute value of about 15
- 25 GHz s) at each individual spike burst or type III burst.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Electromagnetic Polarization Effects due to Axion Photon Mixing
We investigate the effect of axions on the polarization of electromagnetic
waves as they propagate through astronomical distances. We analyze the change
in the dispersion of the electromagnetic wave due to its mixing with axions. We
find that this leads to a shift in polarization and turns out to be the
dominant effect for a wide range of frequencies. We analyze whether this effect
or the decay of photons into axions can explain the large scale anisotropies
which have been observed in the polarizations of quasars and radio galaxies. We
also comment on the possibility that the axion-photon mixing can explain the

Relationship between cortisol and physical performance in older persons
Objective: Hypercortisolism is associated with muscle weakness. This study examines the relationship between cortisol and physical performance in older persons. Design/patients: The study was conducted within the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA), an ongoing cohort study in a population-based sample of healthy older persons in the Netherlands. Data from the second (1995/1996) and fourth (2001/2002) cycle were used pertaining to 1172 (65-88 years) and 884 (65-94 years) men and women, respectively. Measurements: Physical performance was measured by adding up scores on the chair stands, tandem stand and walk test (range 0-12). In the second cycle serum total and calculated free cortisol were assessed; in the fourth cycle evening salivary cortisol was assessed. Regression analysis (stratified for sex, adjusted for age, body mass index, alcohol use, physical activity and region) was performed to examine the cross-sectional relationship between cortisol and physical performance. Results: Women with higher calculated free cortisol scored less well on physical performance (b = -0.28 per SD higher cortisol, P = 0.016), which was mainly explained by poorer performance on the tandem stand (OR = 1.32 for a lower score per SD higher cortisol, P = 0.003). Men with higher salivary cortisol scored less well on physical performance (b = -0.90 in the highest vs. the lowest quartile, P = 0.008), which was mainly explained by poorer performance on the chair stands and walk test (OR = 1.88, P = 0.020 and OR = 1.81, P = 0.027, respectively, in the highest vs. the lowest quartile). Identified particles in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV
The yields of identified particles have been measured at RHIC for Au+Au
collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV using the PHOBOS spectrometer. The ratios of
antiparticle to particle yields near mid-rapidity are presented. The first
measurements of the invariant yields of charged pions, kaons and protons at

Universal Behavior of Charged Particle Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC has measured the multiplicity of primary
charged particles as a function of centrality and pseudorapidity in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6, 130 and 200 GeV. Two kinds of universal
behavior are observed in charged particle production in heavy ion collisions.
The first is that forward particle production, over a range of energies,
follows a universal limiting curve with a non-trivial centrality dependence.
The second arises from comparisons with pp/pbar-p and e+e- data.
N_tot/(N_part/2) in nuclear collisions at high energy scales with sqrt(s) in a
similar way as N_tot in e+e- collisions and has a very weak centrality
dependence. This feature may be related to a reduction in the leading particle
effect due to the multiple collisions suffered per participant in heavy ion

Global Observations from PHOBOS
Particle production in Au+Au collisions has been measured in the PHOBOS
experiment at RHIC for a range of collision energies. Three empirical
observations have emerged from this dataset which require theoretical
examination. First, there is clear evidence of limiting fragmentation. Namely,
particle production in central Au+Au collisions, when expressed as
(), becomes energy independent at high energy for a
broad region of around . This energy-independent region grows
with energy, allowing only a limited region (if any) of longitudinal
boost-invariance. Second, there is a striking similarity between particle
production in e+e- and Au+Au collisions (scaled by the number of participating
nucleon pairs). Both the total number of produced particles and the
longitudinal distribution of produced particles are approximately the same in
e+e- and in scaled Au+Au. This observation was not predicted and has not been
explained. Finally, particle production has been found to scale approximately
with the number of participating nucleon pairs for . This scaling
occurs both for the total multiplicity and for high \pT particles (3 <\pT<

Recent Results from PHOBOS at RHIC
The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC has recorded measurements for Au-Au collisions
spanning nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies from 19.6 GeV to 200 GeV.
Global observables such as elliptic flow and charged particle multiplicity
provide important constraints on model predictions that characterize the state
of matter produced in these collisions. The nearly 4 pi acceptance of the
PHOBOS experiment provides excellent coverage for complete flow and
multiplicity measurements. Results including beam energy and centrality

Intrauterine devices and endometrial cancer risk : a pooled analysis of the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium
Intrauterine devices (IUDs), long-acting and reversible contraceptives, induce a number of immunological and biochemical changes in the uterine environment that could affect endometrial cancer (EC) risk. We addressed this relationship through a pooled analysis of data collected in the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium. We combined individual-level data from 4 cohort and 14 case-control studies, in total 8,801 EC cases and 15,357 controls. Using multivariable logistic regression, we estimated pooled odds ratios (pooled-ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for EC risk associated with ever use, type of device, ages at first and last use, duration of use and time since last use, stratified by study and adjusted for confounders. Ever use of IUDs was inversely related to EC risk (pooled-OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.74-0.90). Compared with never use, reduced risk of EC was observed for inert IUDs (pooled-OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.58-0.82), older age at first use (≥35 years pooled-OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.43-0.67), older age at last use (≥45 years pooled-OR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.50-0.72), longer duration of use (≥10 years pooled-OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.52-0.71) and recent use (within 1 year of study entry pooled-OR = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.30-0.49). Future studies are needed to assess the respective roles of detection biases and biologic effects related to foreign body responses in the endometrium, heavier bleeding (and increased clearance of carcinogenic cells) and localized hormonal changes
Regimen-specific rates of chemotherapy-related amenorrhea in breast cancer survivors
Young women who have not begun or completed their desired childbearing at the time of diagnosis with breast cancer often wish to understand and minimize their risk of chemotherapy-related amenorrhea (CRA). However, the incidence of CRA after regimens that do not include either an anthracycline or a cyclophosphamide is poorly studied. For patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive disease, anthracycline- and cyclophosphamide-sparing regimens (eg, carboplatin/taxane) are common (in combination with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-directed therapy). In this study, accrued in collaboration with Army of Women, menstrual data were analyzed for 151 breast cancer survivors (median age = 41 years at diagnosis, and median time between last chemotherapy and survey = 62.5 months). Last menstrual period was before the last chemotherapy dose in 51% of the 86 participants who received anthracycline/cyclophosphamide/taxane, in 42% of the 43 who received only taxane/cyclophosphamide, and in 13% of the 15 who received carboplatin/taxane. This study suggests that carboplatin/taxane causes less CRA than cyclophosphamide-based regimens
