Influence of skew and cross-coupling on flux-weakening performance of permanent-magnet brushless AC machines
A method is proposed for predicting the flux-weakening performance of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless ac machines accounting for skew and d-q axis cross-coupling. The method is based on a d-q-axis flux-linkage model, a hybrid 2-D finite-element (FE)-analytical method being used to predict the d- and q-axis inductances. However, it only requires 2-D FE analysis of the magnetic field distribution over a cross section of the machine. The developed method is used to predict the torque-speed characteristic of an interior PM brushless ac machine with one stator slot-pitch skew. This is compared with predictions from a direct FE analysis of the machine and validated by measurements
Carrier dynamics and infrared-active phonons in c-axis oriented RuSrGdCuO film
The conductivity spectra of c-axis oriented thin RuSrGdCuO film
on SrTiO substrate, prepared by pulsed-laser deposition, are obtained from
the analysis of the reflectivity spectra over broad frequency range and
temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The free charge carriers are found to be
strongly overdamped with their scattering rate (1.0 eV at room temperature)
exceeding the plasma frequency (0.55 eV). Four phonon lines are identified in
the experimental spectra and assigned to the specific oxygen related in-plane
polarized vibrations based on the comparison with the results of a lattice
dynamics shell model calculations.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Negative Hall coefficient of ultrathin niobium in Si/Nb/Si trilayers
International audienceStructural and transport properties of thin Nb layers in Si/Nb/Si trilayers with Nb layer thickness d from 1.1 nm to 50 nm have been studied. With decreasing thickness, the structure of the Nb layer changes from polycrystalline to amorphous at d 3.3 nm, while the superconducting temperature T c monotonically decreases. The Hall coefficient varies with d systematically but changes sign into negative in ultrathin films with d < 1.6 nm. The influence of boundary scattering on the relaxation rate of carriers, and band broadening in the amorphous films, may contribute to this effect

A study of the optical and radiation damage properties of lead tungstate crystals
Lead tungstate (PbWO{sub 4}) is a new scintillating material which is of great interest for use in high energy electromagnetic calorimeters. It has a very high density, short radiation length and small Moliere radius and has a scintillation light output which peaks between 450--550 nm with a decay time in the range from 5--15 ns. It is presently being considered for use in two large, high resolution electromagnetic calorimeters, one for the CMS experiment and the other for the ALICE experiment, at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In order to meet the stringent demands of these two experiments, the crystals are required to be of high purity, produced uniform light output, and, in the case of CMS, be resistant to radiation damage up to several megarads. Here, a study has been made of the optical and radiation damage properties of undoped and niobium doped lead tungstate crystals. Data were obtained on the optical absorbance, the intensity and decay time of the scintillation light output, and the radioluminescence and photoluminescence emission spectra. Radiation damage was studied in several undoped and niobium doped samples using {sup 60}Co gamma ray irradiation. The change in optical absorption and observed scintillation light output was measured as a function of dose up to total cumulative doses on the order of 800 krad. The radiation induced phosphorescence and thermoluminescence was also measured, as well as recovery from damage by optical bleaching and thermal annealing. An investigation was also made to determine trace element impurities in several samples
The bright side of being uncertain: the impact of economic policy uncertainty on corporate innovation
Purpose: This study aims to theoretically hypothesize and empirically examine the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on firms' innovation performance as well as the contingency conditions of this relationship. Design/methodology/approach: This study collects and combines secondary longitudinal data from multiple sources to test for a direct impact of EPU on firms' innovation performance. It further examines the moderating effects of firms' operational and marketing capabilities. A series of robustness checks are performed to ensure the consistency of the findings. Findings: In contrast to the common belief that EPU reduces the innovativeness of firms, the authors find an inverted-U relationship between EPU and innovation performance, indicating that a moderate level of EPU actually promotes innovation. Further analysis suggests that firms' operational and marketing capabilities make the inverted-U relationship steeper, further enhancing firms' innovation performance at a moderate level of EPU. Originality/value: This study adds to the emerging literature that investigates the operational implications of EPU, which enhances our understanding of the potential bright side of EPU and broadens the scope of operational risk management
Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadrons containing at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb taken,
respectively, at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II
detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for

cross sections and the branching fractions for decay into these
final states at 90% C.L..Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

A Green's function approach to transmission of massless Dirac fermions in graphene through an array of random scatterers
We consider the transmission of massless Dirac fermions through an array of
short range scatterers which are modeled as randomly positioned -
function like potentials along the x-axis. We particularly discuss the
interplay between disorder-induced localization that is the hallmark of a
non-relativistic system and two important properties of such massless Dirac
fermions, namely, complete transmission at normal incidence and periodic
dependence of transmission coefficient on the strength of the barrier that
leads to a periodic resonant transmission. This leads to two different types of
conductance behavior as a function of the system size at the resonant and the
off-resonance strengths of the delta function potential. We explain this
behavior of the conductance in terms of the transmission through a pair of such
barriers using a Green's function based approach. The method helps to
understand such disordered transport in terms of well known optical phenomena
such as Fabry Perot resonances.Comment: 22 double spaced single column pages. 15 .eps figure
