Improved Approximation Algorithms for Computing k Disjoint Paths Subject to Two Constraints

For a given graph GG with positive integral cost and delay on edges, distinct vertices ss and tt, cost bound CZ+C\in Z^{+} and delay bound DZ+D\in Z^{+}, the kk bi-constraint path (kkBCP) problem is to compute kk disjoint stst-paths subject to CC and DD. This problem is known NP-hard, even when k=1k=1 \cite{garey1979computers}. This paper first gives a simple approximation algorithm with factor-(2,2)(2,2), i.e. the algorithm computes a solution with delay and cost bounded by 2D2*D and 2C2*C respectively. Later, a novel improved approximation algorithm with ratio (1+β,max{2,1+ln1β})(1+\beta,\,\max\{2,\,1+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}\}) is developed by constructing interesting auxiliary graphs and employing the cycle cancellation method. As a consequence, we can obtain a factor-(1.369,2)(1.369,\,2) approximation algorithm by setting 1+ln1β=21+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}=2 and a factor-(1.567,1.567)(1.567,\,1.567) algorithm by setting 1+β=1+ln1β1+\beta=1+\ln\frac{1}{\beta}. Besides, by setting β=0\beta=0, an approximation algorithm with ratio (1,O(lnn))(1,\, O(\ln n)), i.e. an algorithm with only a single factor ratio O(lnn)O(\ln n) on cost, can be immediately obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial approximation algorithm for the kkBCP problem that strictly obeys the delay constraint.Comment: 12 page

Silicon spin diffusion transistor: materials, physics and device characteristics

    No full text
The realisation that eaveryday electronics has ignored the spin of the carrier in favour of its charge is the foundation of the field of spintronics. Starting with simple two-terminal devices based on GMR and tunnel magnetoresistance, the technology has advanced to consider three-terminal devices that aim to combine spin sensitivity with a high current gain and a large current output. These devices require both efficient spin injection and semiconductor fabrication. In this paper, a discussion is presented of the design, operation and characteristics of the only spin transistor that has yielded a current gain greater than one in combination with reasonable output current

Effect of Tensor Correlations on Gamow-Teller States in 90Zr and 208Pb

    Get PDF
The tensor terms of the Skyrme effective interaction are included in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation (HF+RPA) model. The Gamow-Teller (GT) strength function of 90Zr and 208Pb are calculated with and without the tensor terms. The main peaks are moved downwards by about 2 MeV when including the tensor contribution. About 10% of the non-energy weighted sum rule is shifted to the excitation energy region above 30 MeV by the RPA tensor correlations. The contribution of the tensor terms to the energy weighted sum rule is given analytically, and compared to the outcome of RPA.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures,2 table

Text detection and recognition is a challenging problem in document analysis due 10 the presence of the unpredictable nature of video texts, such as the variations of orientation, font and size, illumination effects, and even different 20/30 text shadows. In this paper, we propose a novel horizontal and vertical symmetry feature by calculating the gradient direction and the gradient magnitude of each text candidate, which results in Potential Text Candidates (PTCs) after applying the k-means clustering algorithm on the gradient image of each input frame to verify PTC , we explore temporal information of video by proposing an iterative process that continuously verifies the PTCs of the first frame and the successive frames, until the process meets the converging criterion. This outputs Stable Potential Text Candidates (SPTCs). For each , PTC, the method obtains text representatives with the help of the edge image of the input frame. Then for each text representative, we divide it into four quadrants and check a new Mutual Nearest Neighbor Symmetry (MNNS) based on the dominant stroke width distances of the four quadrants. A voting method is finally proposed to clasify each text block as either 2D or 3D by counting the text representatives that satisfy MNNS. Experimental results on clasifying 2D and 3D text images are promising, and the result re further validated by text detection and recognition before clasification and after clasification with the exiting methods, respectively

A security analysis of automated Chinese turing tests

Text-based Captchas have been widely used to deter misuse of services on the Internet. However, many designs have been broken. It is intellectually interesting and practically relevant to look for alternative designs, which are currently a topic of active research. We motivate the study of Chinese Captchas as an interesting alternative design - counterintuitively, it is possible to design Chinese Captchas that are universally usable, even to those who have never studied Chinese language. More importantly, we ask a fundamental question: is the segmentation-resistance principle established for Roman-character based Captchas applicable to Chinese based designs? With deep learning techniques, we offer the first evidence that computers do recognize individual Chinese characters well, regardless of distortion levels. This suggests that many real-world Chinese schemes are insecure, in contrast to common beliefs. Our result offers an essential guideline to the design of secure Chinese Captchas, and it is also applicable to Captchas using other large-alphabet languages such as Japanese

An Exact Algorithm for Side-Chain Placement in Protein Design

    Get PDF
Computational protein design aims at constructing novel or improved functions on the structure of a given protein backbone and has important applications in the pharmaceutical and biotechnical industry. The underlying combinatorial side-chain placement problem consists of choosing a side-chain placement for each residue position such that the resulting overall energy is minimum. The choice of the side-chain then also determines the amino acid for this position. Many algorithms for this NP-hard problem have been proposed in the context of homology modeling, which, however, reach their limits when faced with large protein design instances. In this paper, we propose a new exact method for the side-chain placement problem that works well even for large instance sizes as they appear in protein design. Our main contribution is a dedicated branch-and-bound algorithm that combines tight upper and lower bounds resulting from a novel Lagrangian relaxation approach for side-chain placement. Our experimental results show that our method outperforms alternative state-of-the art exact approaches and makes it possible to optimally solve large protein design instances routinely

Spin-isospin excitations as quantitative constraints for the tensor force

    Get PDF
Gamow-Teller (GT) and charge-exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitation energies in 90Zr and 208Pb are systematically studied to determine the appropriate magnitude of the tensor terms of the Skyrme interactions. We have found that the centroid energies of GT and SD excitations are sensitive to the adopted strengths of the triplet-even and triplet-odd tensor interactions. Especially, the 1- SD state plays a crucial role in constraining the triplet-even part while the triplet-odd part is related rather to the GT peaks. Among the 36 TIJ parameter sets that include nonperturbatively the tensor terms, the four sets, T21, T32, T43, and T54, give reasonable results for the centroid energies in comparison with the experimental data. The sign and magnitude of the tensor terms are also discussed when these terms are added to the existing Skyrme interactions SGII and SLy5. The triplet-even strength can be constrained in a narrow range by using the available experimental data while further empirical data are needed to set a constraint on the triplet-odd term
