Heterologous rhizobial lipochitin oligosaccharides and chitin oligomers induce cortical cell divisions in red clover roots, transformed with the pea lectin gene
Division of cortical cells in roots of leguminous plants is triggered by lipochitin oligosaccharides (LCOs) secreted by the rhizobial microsymbiont, Previously, we have shown that presence of pea lectin in transgenic white clover hairy roots renders these roots susceptible to induction of root nodule formation by pea-specific rhizobia (C, L, Diaz, L, S, Melchers, P. J, J, Hooykaas, B, J, J, Lugtenberg, and J, W, Kijne, Nature 338:579-581, 1989), Here, we report that pea lectin-transformed red clover hairy roots form nodule primordium-like structures after inoculation with pea-, alfalfa-, and Lotus-specific rhizobia, which normally do not nodulate red clover. External application of a broad range of purified LCOs showed all of them to be active in induction of cortical cell divisions and cell expansion in a radial direction, resulting in formation of structures that resemble nodule primordia induced by clover-specific rhizobia, This activity was obvious in about 50% of the red clover plants carrying hairy roots transformed with the pea lectin gene. Also, chitopentaose, chitotetraose, chitotriose, and chitobiose were able to induce cortical cell divisions and cell expansion in a radial direction in transgenic roots, but not in control roots. Sugar-binding activity of pea lectin was essential for its effect. These results show that transformation of red clover roots with pea lectin results in a broadened response of legume root cortical cells to externally applied potentially mitogenic oligochitin signals.Microbial Biotechnolog

PROFIT: a new alternative for emission-line PROfile FITting
I briefly describe a simple routine for emission-line profiles fitting by
Gaussian curves or Gauss-Hermite series. The PROFIT (line-PROfile FITting)
routine represent a new alternative for use in fits data cubes, as those from
Integral Field Spectroscopy or Fabry-Perot Interferometry, and may be useful to
better study the emission-line flux distributions and gas kinematics in
distinct astrophysical objects, such as the central regions of galaxies and
star forming regions. The PROFIT routine is written in IDL language and is
available at http://www.ufsm.br/rogemar/software.html.
The PROFIT routine was used to fit the [Fe II]1.257um emission-line profiles
for about 1800 spectra of the inner 350 pc of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk1066
obtained with Gemini NIFS and shows that the line profiles are better
reproduced by Gauss-Hermite series than by the commonly used Gaussian curves.
The two-dimensional map of the h_3 Gauss-Hermite moment shows its highest
absolute values in regions close to the edge of the radio structure. These high
values may be originated in an biconical outflowing gas associated with the
radio jet - previously observed in the optical [O III] emission. The analysis
of this kinematic component indicates that the radio jet leaves the center of
the galaxy with the north-west side slightly oriented towards us and the

Dynamics of systems with isotropic competing interactions in an external field: a Langevin approach
We study the Langevin dynamics of a ferromagnetic Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian
with a competing long-range repulsive term in the presence of an external
magnetic field. The model is analytically solved within the self consistent
Hartree approximation for two different initial conditions: disordered or zero
field cooled (ZFC), and fully magnetized or field cooled (FC). To test the
predictions of the approximation we develop a suitable numerical scheme to
ensure the isotropic nature of the interactions. Both the analytical approach
and the numerical simulations of two-dimensional finite systems confirm a
simple aging scenario at zero temperature and zero field. At zero temperature a
critical field is found below which the initial conditions are relevant
for the long time dynamics of the system. For a logarithmic growth of
modulated domains is found in the numerical simulations but this behavior is
not captured by the analytical approach which predicts a growth law at
Results of the BiPo-1 prototype for radiopurity measurements for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils
The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of
extremely high radiopurity in Tl and Bi for the SuperNEMO
double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8
of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground
Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different
components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the
plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data
collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in
Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface
activity of the scintillators of (Tl) 1.5
Bq/m is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo
detector having 12 m of active surface area, is able to qualify the
radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required
sensitivity of (Tl) 2 Bq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six

Spectral modeling of scintillator for the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO detectors
We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon
transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3
and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for
neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements
using conversion electrons from a calibration source of and show
that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the
calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our
