Counterexamples to the maximal p-norm multiplicativity conjecture for all p > 1
For all p > 1, we demonstrate the existence of quantum channels with
non-multiplicative maximal output p-norms. Equivalently, for all p >1, the
minimum output Renyi entropy of order p of a quantum channel is not additive.
The violations found are large; in all cases, the minimum output Renyi entropy
of order p for a product channel need not be significantly greater than the
minimum output entropy of its individual factors. Since p=1 corresponds to the
von Neumann entropy, these counterexamples demonstrate that if the additivity
conjecture of quantum information theory is true, it cannot be proved as a
consequence of any channel-independent guarantee of maximal p-norm
multiplicativity. We also show that a class of channels previously studied in
the context of approximate encryption lead to counterexamples for all p > 2.Comment: Merger of arXiv:0707.0402 and arXiv:0707.3291 containing new and

Resolving Fermi, PAMELA and ATIC anomalies in split supersymmetry without R-parity
A long-lived decaying dark matter as a resolution to Fermi, PAMELA and ATIC
anomalies is investigated in the framework of split supersymmetry (SUSY)
without R-parity, where the neutralino is regarded as the dark matter and the
extreme fine-tuned couplings for the long-lived neutralino are naturally evaded
in the usual approach.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Erroneous results concerning the cascade

The effect of autonomy, training opportunities, age and salaries on job satisfaction in the South East Asian retail petroleum industry
South East Asian petroleum retailers are under considerable pressure to improve service quality by reducing turnover. An empirical methodology from this industry determined the extent to which job characteristics, training opportunities, age and salary influenced the level of job satisfaction, an indicator of turnover. Responses are reported on a random sample of 165 site employees (a 68% response rate) of a Singaporean retail petroleum firm. A restricted multivariate regression model of autonomy and training opportunities explained the majority (35.4%) of the variability of job satisfaction. Age did not moderate these relationships, except for employees >21 years of age, who reported enhanced job satisfaction with additional salary. Human Capital theory, Life Cycle theory and Job Enrichment theory are invoked and explored in the context of these findings in the South East Asian retail petroleum industry. In the South East Asian retail petroleum industry, jobs providing employees with the opportunity to undertake a variety of tasks that enhanced the experienced meaningfulness of work are likely to promote job satisfaction, reduce turnover and increase the quality of service

Energetic particle influence on the Earth's atmosphere
This manuscript gives an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the effects of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) onto the whole atmosphere, from the lower thermosphere/mesosphere through the stratosphere and troposphere, to the surface. The paper summarizes the different sources and energies of particles, principally
galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), solar energetic particles (SEPs) and energetic electron precipitation (EEP). All the proposed mechanisms by which EPP can affect the atmosphere
are discussed, including chemical changes in the upper atmosphere and lower thermosphere, chemistry-dynamics feedbacks, the global electric circuit and cloud formation. The role of energetic particles in Earth’s atmosphere is a multi-disciplinary problem that requires expertise from a range of scientific backgrounds. To assist with this synergy, summary tables are provided, which are intended to evaluate the level of current knowledge of the effects of energetic particles on processes in the entire atmosphere
TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access
Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives
Iridoid glucosides of Paederota bonarota and the relationships between Paederota and Veronica
In a chemical investigation of the water-soluble compounds in Paederota bonarota, five known iridoid glucosides were isolated together with a compound with an 8,9-double bond, namely bonarotoside (10-O-benzoyl arborescosidic acid). The known iridoid glucosides were aucubin, catalpol and the 6-O-esters of catalpol: verproside, catalposide, amphicoside and veronicoside, compounds that are characteristic for many species of Veronica. The only other species in the genus Paederota, namely Paederota lutea contains an iridoid glucoside analogous to bonarotoside but with an additional arabinosyl moiety present. This common chemical attribute of Paederota distinguishes the genus from Veronica; it is in good agreement with the results from recent investigations of the phylogeny based on plastid DNA sequences of Veronica and its closest relatives, where Paederota is placed as a sister-group next to Veronica and not included in Veronica as previously suggested

In-line process instrumentation for geothermal power plants
The economics of geothermal power depend on satisfactory plant reliability of continuous operation. Plant problems and extended downtime due to corrosion failures, scale buildup, or injection well plugging have affected many past geothermal projects. If in-line instrumentation can be developed to alert plant operators to correctable problems, then the cost and reliability of geothermal power will be improved. PNL has completed a problem of development of in-line corrosion and chemical instrumentation for binary cycle plants, and this technology has been used to set up a monitoring program at the Heber Binary Demonstration Power Plant. The current emphasis has shifted to development of particle meters for use on injection lines and CO/sub 2/ and pH probes for use in control of calcite scaling. Plans have been outlined to develop and demonstrate flash plant instrumentation for corrosion monitoring, scaling, steam purity, and injection line particle counting. 2 refs., 17 figs., 1 tab
