    The effect of meloxicam on pain sensitivity, rumination time, and clinical signs in dairy cows with endotoxin-induced clinical mastitis

    AbstractThe objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the use of a pressure algometer and an automated rumination monitoring system to assess changes in pain sensitivity and rumination time in response to endotoxin-induced clinical mastitis and (2) evaluate the effect of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug meloxicam on pain sensitivity and rumination time, as well as other clinical signs, in dairy cattle with endotoxin-induced clinical mastitis. Clinical mastitis was induced in 12 primiparous and 12 multiparous lactating dairy cows by intramammary infusion of 25µg of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into 1 uninfected quarter. Immediately after, half the cows were injected subcutaneously with meloxicam (treated group) and half with the same volume of a placebo solution (control group). Pain sensitivity was assessed by measuring the difference in pressure required to elicit a response on the control and challenged quarter using an algometer 3 d before, immediately before, and at 3, 6, 12, and 24h after LPS infusion and either meloxicam or placebo injection. Rumination was continuously monitored from 2 d before to 3 d after LPS infusion using rumination loggers. Udder edema, body temperature, somatic cell score, and dry matter intake were also monitored to evaluate the occurrence and the duration of the inflammation after LPS infusion. In control animals, the difference in the pressure applied to the control and challenged quarters (control − challenged quarter) increased by 1.1±0.4kg of force 6h after LPS infusion compared with the baseline, suggesting an increase in pain sensitivity in the challenged quarter. Neither the LPS infusion nor the meloxicam treatment had an effect on daily rumination time. However, the rumination diurnal pattern on the day of LPS infusion showed an overall deviation from the baseline pattern. Cows spent less time ruminating in the hours following LPS infusion and more time ruminating later in the day. Meloxicam did not alter somatic cell score or dry matter intake. However, meloxicam-treated animals had less udder edema and a lower body temperature in the hours following LPS infusion compared with control animals. In conclusion, pressure algometers and rumination loggers show promise as tools to detect mastitis and monitor recovery on farm. Further, meloxicam has a beneficial effect in relieving pain and decreasing udder edema and body temperature in LPS-induced clinical mastitis

    epsilon'/epsilon at the NLO: 10 Years Later

    During the last four years several parameters relevant for the analysis of the CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon improved and/or changed significantly. In particular, the experimental value of epsilon'/epsilon and the strange quark mass decreased, the uncertainty in the CKM factor has been reduced, and for a value of the hadronic matrix element of the dominant electroweak penguin operator Q_8, some consensus has been reached among several theory groups. In view of this situation, ten years after the first analyses of epsilon'/epsilon at the next-to-leading order, we reconsider the analysis of epsilon'/epsilon within the SM and investigate what can be said about the hadronic Q_6 matrix element of the dominant QCD penguin operator on the basis of the present experimental value of epsilon'/epsilon and todays values of all other parameters. Employing a conservative range for the reduced electroweak penguin matrix element R_8=1.0+-0.2 from lattice QCD, and present values for all other input parameters, on the basis of the current world average for epsilon'/epsilon, we obtain the reduced hadronic matrix element of the dominant QCD penguin operator R_6=1.23+-0.16 implying _0^NDR(m_c) ~ -0.8 _2^NDR(m_c). We compare these results with those obtained in large-N_c approaches in which generally R_6 ~ R_8 and _0^NDR(m_c) is chirally suppressed relatively to _2^NDR(m_c).     Contribution of Color Information in Visual Saliency Model for Videos

    International audienceMuch research has been concerned with the contribution of the low level features of a visual scene to the deployment of visual attention. Bottom-up saliency models have been developed to predict the location of gaze according to these features. So far, color besides to brightness, contrast and motion is considered as one of the primary features in computing bottom-up saliency. However, its contribution in guiding eye movements when viewing natural scenes has been debated. We investigated the contribution of color information in a bottom-up visual saliency model. The model efficiency was tested using the experimental data obtained on 45 observers who were eye tracked while freely exploring a large data set of color and grayscale videos. The two datasets of recorded eye positions, for grayscale and color videos, were compared with a luminance-based saliency model. We incorporated chrominance information to the model. Results show that color information improves the performance of the saliency model in predicting eye positions

    Status of the Hadronic tau Decay Determination of |V_{us}|

    We update the hadronic tau determination of |V_{us}|, showing that current strange branching fractions produce results 2-3 sigma lower than 3-family unitarity expectations.     The Joint Extraction of m_s and V_us From Hadronic Tau Decay Data

    We discuss the simultaneous determination of m_s and V_us from flavor-breaking hadronic tau decay sum rules, focussing on weight choices designed to better control problems associated with the slow convergence of the relevant integrated D=2 OPE series. The results are found to display improved stability and consistency relative to those of conventional analyses based on the ``(k,0) spectral weights''. The results for m_s agree well with those of recent strange scalar sum rule and strange pseudoscalar sum rule and lattice analyses. Results for V_us agree within errors with those of lattice-input-based K_{ell 3} and Gamma [K_{mu 2}]/\Gamma [pi_{mu 2}] analyses.     Astroparticle Physics with a Customized Low-Background Broad Energy Germanium Detector

    The MAJORANA Collaboration is building the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, a 60 kg array of high purity germanium detectors housed in an ultra-low background shield at the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, SD. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge while demonstrating the feasibility of a tonne-scale experiment. It may also carry out a dark matter search in the 1-10 GeV/c^2 mass range. We have found that customized Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors produced by Canberra have several desirable features for a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment, including low electronic noise, excellent pulse shape analysis capabilities, and simple fabrication. We have deployed a customized BEGe, the MAJORANA Low-Background BEGe at Kimballton (MALBEK), in a low-background cryostat and shield at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility in Virginia.     The Impact of |Delta I|=5/2 Transitions in K-> pi pi Decays

    We consider the impact of isospin violation on the analysis of K-> pi pi decays. We scrutinize, in particular, the phenomenological role played by the additional weak amplitude, of |Delta I|=5/2 in character, incurred by the presence of isospin violation. We show that Watson's theorem is appropriate in O(m_d-m_u), so that the inferred pi-pi phase shift at sqrt{s}=m_K determines the strong phase difference between the I=0 and I=2 amplitudes in K-> pi pi decay. We find the magnitude of the |Delta I|=5/2 amplitude thus implied by the empirical branching ratios to be larger than expected from estimates of isospin-violating strong and electromagnetic effects. We effect a new determination of the octet and 27-plet coupling constants with strong-interaction isospin violation and with electromagnetic effects, as computed by Cirigliano, Donoghue, and Golowich, and find that we are unable to resolve the difficulty. Exploring the role of |Delta I|=5/2 transitions in the CP-violating observable epsilon'/epsilon, we determine that the presence of a |Delta I|=5/2 amplitude impacts the empirical determination of omega, the ratio of the real parts of the |Delta I|=3/2 to |Delta I|=1/2 amplitudes, and that it generates a decrease in the estimation of epsilon'/epsilon.Comment: 29 pages, 1 ps fig, refs. added, to appear in Phys.     A New Prediction for Direct CP Violation \epsilon'/\epsilon and \Delta I = 1/2 Rule

    The low energy dynamics of QCD is investigated with special attention paid to the matching between QCD and chiral perturbation theory(ChPT), and also to some useful algebraic chiral operator relations which survive even when we include chiral loop corrections. It then allows us to evaluate the hadronic matrix elements below the energy scale Λχ1\Lambda_{\chi} \simeq 1 GeV. Based on the new analyzes, we present a consistent prediction for both direct CP-violating parameter ϵ/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon and ΔI=1/2\Delta I =1/2 rule in the kaon decays. In the leading 1/Nc1/N_c approximation, the isospin amplitudes A0A_0 and A2A_2 are found to agree well with the data, and the direct CP-violating parameter ϵ/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon is predicted to be large, which also confirms our early conclusion. Its numerical value is ϵ/ϵ=23.67.8+12.4×104(Imλt/1.2×104)\epsilon'/\epsilon = 23.6^{+12.4}_{-7.8}\times 10^{-4}(Im\lambda_t/1.2\times 10^{-4}) which is no longer sensitive to the strange quark mass due to the matching conditions. Taking into account a simultaneous consistent analysis on the isospin amplitudes A0A_0 and A2A_2, the ratio ϵ/ϵ\epsilon'/\epsilon is in favor of the values ϵ/ϵ=(20±9)×104\epsilon'/\epsilon = (20\pm 9)\times 10^{-4}.Comment: 19 pages, ReVtex, no figures, the corrected version to be published in Phys.     Latino Communities in the United States: Place-Making in the Pre-World War II, Postwar, and Contemporary City

    Scholarship on Latino communities in the United States has yet to catch up with the rapid growth of this ethnic population in the country. Understanding the Latino urban experience and developing plans to better respond to both the needs of Latino communities and their integration within society is not only relevant, but also urgently necessary. Using the city of Los Angeles as a main lens, in addition to a general look at the urban Southwest, we contribute to the scholarship on the subject with a review of literature on Latino communities. We structure the review as an assessment of the various challenges and opportunities for urban Latinos in the pre-war, postwar, and contemporary city. Focusing on space, culture, economy, and governance, we chart the various roles both the private and public sectors play in meeting these challenges. Our reading of the literature shows that particular government actions in the economic and governance domains in the past had positive impacts on Latino integration, and we call for a similar effort today in addressing contemporary challenges. We conclude by suggesting that future planning scholarship on Latino communities engage the wider urban studies literature, focus on emerging forms of urbanization, and call on planners to sustain increased academic and practical interest in the topic
