    Magnetic domain studies of permalloy wire-based structures with junctions

    Permalloy (Ni-80 Fe-20) wire-based structures (30 nm thick and 1 . w . 10 mum wide) with junctions (crosses, networks, H-shapes, rectangular chains and ring chains) prepared on a GaAs (100) substrate were observed in both their demagnetized and remanent states by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) in order to investigate the role of junction geometry in domain formation, Except in ring chains, two classes of domain configuration are found at the junction: (i) a domain wall-like feature due to abrupt spin rotation and (ii) a triangle-shape domain consistent with a flux closure configuration, Ring chains, on the other hand, form vortex domains at every other junction. The MFM observations are compared with micromagnetic calculations which qualitatively support the magnetic domain configurations

    Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) squares (30 nm thick and w mu m wide; 1 less than or equal to w less than or equal to 200 mu m) and circular disks (30 nm thick and r mu m diameter; 1 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 200 mu m) prepared on a GaAs (100) substrate were observed in both their demagnetized and remanent states by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) associated with non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). The squares (2 less than or equal to w mu m) exhibited conventional closure domains and the corner plays a very important role in creating new walls. The circular disks, on the other hand, formed either vortex domain (5 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 20 mu m) or multi-domain (50 less than or equal to r mu m) states, The magnetization rotation is observed by MFM to change according to the size and shape of the elements, The MFM observations are supported by micromagnetic calculations which confirm the effect of the corner on the domain wall formation

    The magnetization reversal process in mesoscopic permalloy (Ni80Fe20) wire structures has been investigated using scanning Kerr microscopy, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and micromagnetic calculations. We find that the junction offers a site for reversed domain wall nucleation in the narrow part of the wires. As a consequence, the switching field is dominated by the domain nucleation field and the junction region initiates reversal by the wall motion following the nucleation of domains.     The magnetization reversal and magnetic anisotropy in Co network structures have been studied using magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). An enhancement of the coercivity is observed in the network structures and is attributed to the pinning of domain walls by the hole edges in the vicinity of which the demagnetizing field spatially varies. We find that the magnetization reversal process is dominated by the intrinsic unaxial anisotropy (2K(u)/M(s)approximate to 200 Oe) in spite of the shape anisotropy induced by the hole edges. The influence of the cross-junction on the competition between the intrinsic uniaxial anisotropy and the induced shape anisotropy is discussed using micromagnetic simulations

    Control of ionic selectivity by a pore helix residue in the Kv1.2 channel

    Interaction between the selectivity filter and the adjacent pore helix of voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels controls pore stability during K+ conduction. Kv channels, having their selectivity filter destabilized during depolarization, are said to undergo C-type inactivation. We examined the functionality of a residue at the pore helix of the Kv1.2 channel (V370), which reportedly affects C-type inactivation. A mutation into glycine (V370G) caused a shift in reversal potential from around -72 to -9 mV. The permeability ratios (P-Na/P-K) of the wild type and V370G mutant are 0.04 and 0.76, respectively. In the wild-type, P-Rb/P-K, P-Cs/P-K and P-Li/P-K are 0.78, 0.10 and 0.05, respectively. Kv1.2 V370G channels had enhanced permeability to Rb+ and Cs+ (P-Rb/P-K and P-Cs/P-K are 1.63 and 1.18, respectively); however, Li+ permeability was not significantly augmented (P-Li/P-K is 0.13). Therefore, in addition to its known effect on pore stability, V370 of Kv1.2 is also crucial in controlling ion selectivity

    Weighted Assortative And Disassortative Networks Model

    Real-world networks process structured connections since they have non-trivial vertex degree correlation and clustering. Here we propose a toy model of structure formation in real-world weighted network. In our model, a network evolves by topological growth as well as by weight change. In addition, we introduce the weighted assortativity coefficient, which generalizes the assortativity coefficient of a topological network, to measure the tendency of having a high-weighted link between two vertices of similar degrees. Network generated by our model exhibits scale-free behavior with a tunable exponent. Besides, a few non-trivial features found in real-world networks are reproduced by varying the parameter ruling the speed of weight evolution. Most importantly, by studying the weighted assortativity coefficient, we found that both topologically assortative and disassortative networks generated by our model are in fact weighted assortative.Comment: 8 pages, minor clarifications, to be published in Physica

    Management of tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis infection in human immunodeficiency virus-infected persons

    The syndemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) /tuberculosis (TB) co-infection has grown as a result of the considerable sociogeographic overlaps between the two epidemics. The situation is particularly worrisome in countries with high or intermediate TB burden against the background of a variable HIV epidemic state. Early diagnosis of TB disease in an HIVinfected person is paramount but suffers from lack of sensitive and specific diagnostic tools. Enhanced symptom screening is currently advocated, and the wide application of affordable molecular diagnostics is urgently needed. Treatment of TB/HIV co-infection involves the concurrent use of standard antiretrovirals and antimycobacterials during which harmful drug interaction may occur. The pharmacokinetic interaction between rifamycin and antiretrovirals is a case in point, requiring dosage adjustment and preferential use of rifabutin, if available. Early initiation of antiretroviral therapy is indicated, preferably at 2 weeks after starting TB treatment for patients with a CD4 of <50 cells/mL. Development of TB-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) is however more frequent with early antiretroviral therapy. The diagnosis of TB-IRIS is another clinical challenge, and cautious use of corticosteroids is suggested to improve clinical outcome. As a preventive measure against active TB disease, the screening for latent TB infection should be widely practiced, followed by at least 6–9 months of isoniazid treatment.To date tuberculin skin test remains the only diagnostic tool in high TB burden countries. The role of alternative tests, for example, interferon-g release assay, would need to be better defined for clinical application

    News discourses on distant suffering: A critical discourse analysis of the 2003 SARS outbreak

    News carries a unique signifying power, a power to represent events in particular ways (Fairclough, 1995). Applying Critical Discourse Analysis and Chouliaraki's theory on the mediation of suffering (2006), this article explores the news representation of the 2003 global SARS outbreak. Following a case-based methodology, we investigate how two Belgian television stations have covered the international outbreak of SARS. By looking into the mediation of four selected discursive moments, underlying discourses of power, hierarchy and compassion were unraveled. The analysis further identified the key role of proximity in international news reporting and supports the claim that Western news media mainly reproduce a Euro-American centered world order. This article argues that news coverage of international crises such as SARS constructs and maintains the socio-cultural difference between 'us' and 'them' as well as articulating global power hierarchies and a division of the world in zones of poverty and prosperity, danger and safety

    Electronic structure in underdoped cuprates due to the emergence of a pseudogap

    The phenomenological Green's function developed in the works of Yang, Rice and Zhang has been very successful in understanding many of the anomalous superconducting properties of the deeply underdoped cuprates. It is based on considerations of the resonating valence bond spin liquid approximation and is designed to describe the underdoped regime of the cuprates. Here we emphasize the region of doping, xx, just below the quantum critical point at which the pseudogap develops. In addition to Luttinger hole pockets centered around the nodal direction, there are electron pockets near the antinodes which are connected to the hole pockets by gapped bridging contours. We determine the contours of nearest approach as would be measured in angular resolved photoemission experiments and emphasize signatures of the Fermi surface reconstruction from the large Fermi contour of Fermi liquid theory (which contains 1+x1+x hole states) to the Luttinger pocket (which contains xx hole states). We find that the quasiparticle effective mass renormalization increases strongly towards the edge of the Luttinger pockets beyond which it diverges.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    Twenty five years after KLS: A celebration of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics

    When Lenz proposed a simple model for phase transitions in magnetism, he couldn't have imagined that the "Ising model" was to become a jewel in field of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Its role spans the spectrum, from a good pedagogical example to a universality class in critical phenomena. A quarter century ago, Katz, Lebowitz and Spohn found a similar treasure. By introducing a seemingly trivial modification to the Ising lattice gas, they took it into the vast realms of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. An abundant variety of unexpected behavior emerged and caught many of us by surprise. We present a brief review of some of the new insights garnered and some of the outstanding puzzles, as well as speculate on the model's role in the future of non-equilibrium statistical physics.Comment: 3 figures.
