Calculation of resonance neutron absorption in two-region problems /the GAROL code/
GAROL computer program explicitly takes into account those effects which arise from neutron resonance overlap of an individual resonance absorber and of mixtures of different resonance absorbers. GAROL computes effective group cross-sections for the resolved resonances of a mixture of isotopes in a two-region cell
Ion-retarding lens improves the abundance sensitivity of tandem mass spectrometers
Ion-retarding lens which increases the abundance sensitivity of tandem magnetic-analyzer mass spectrometers measures isotopes of low abundance in mass positions adjacent to isotopes of high abundance. The lens increases the abundance sensitivity for isotopes lying farther from high abundance isotopes than the energy cutoff of the lens

Accretion Disk Temperatures of QSOs: Constraints from the Emission Lines
QSO emission-line spectra are compared to predictions based on theoretical
ionizing continua of accretion disks. Observed line intensities do not show the
expected trend of higher ionization with higher accretion disk temperature as
derived from the black hole mass and accretion rate. This suggests that, at
least for accretion rates close to the Eddington limit, the inner disk does not
reach temperatures as high as expected from standard disk theory. Modified
radial temperature profiles, taking account of winds or advection in the inner
disk, achieve better agreement with observation. This conclusion agrees with an
earlier study of QSO continuum colors as a function of disk temperature. The
emission lines of radio-detected and radio-undetected sources show different
trends as a function of disk temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Ap
Synthesis of hetero-bifunctional, end-capped oligo-EDOT derivatives
Conjugated oligomers of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) are attractive materials for tissue engineering applications, and as model systems for studying the properties of the widely used polymer PEDOT. We report here the facile synthesis of a series of keto-acid end-capped oligo-EDOT derivatives (n = 2-7) through a combination of a glyoxylation end capping strategy and iterative direct arylation chain extension. Importantly, these structures not only represent the longest oligo-EDOTs reported, but are also bench stable in contrast to previous reports on such oligomers. The constructs reported here can undergo subsequent derivatization for integration into higher order architectures, such as those required for tissue engineering applications. The synthesis of hetero-bifunctional constructs, as well as those containing mixed monomer units is also reported, allowing further complexity to be installed in a controlled manner. Finally, we describe the optical and electrochemical properties of these oligomers and demonstrate the importance of the keto-acid in determining their characteristics
Investigations of the Non-Linear LMC Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation with Testimator and Schwarz Information Criterion Methods
In this paper, we investigate the linearity versus non-linearity of the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relation using two
statistical approaches not previously applied to this problem: the testimator
method and the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC). The testimator method is
extended to multiple stages for the first time, shown to be unbiased and the
variance of the estimated slope can be proved to be smaller than the standard
slope estimated from linear regression theory. The Schwarz Information
Criterion (also known as the Bayesian Information Criterion) is more
conservative than the Akaike Information Criterion and tends to choose lower
order models. By using simulated data sets, we verify that these statistical
techniques can be used to detect intrinsically linear and/or non-linear P-L
relations. These methods are then applied to independent LMC Cepheid data sets
from the OGLE project and the MACHO project, respectively. Our results imply
that there is a change of slope in longer period ranges for all of the data
sets. This strongly supports previous results, obtained from independent
statistical tests, that the observed LMC P-L relation is non-linear with a
break period at/around 10 days.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures and 3 tables, PASP accepte
Estimating population cardinal health state valuation models from individual ordinal (rank) health state preference data
Ranking exercises have routinely been used as warm-up exercises within health state valuation surveys. Very little use has been made of the information obtained in this process. Instead, research has focussed upon the analysis of health state valuation data obtained using the visual analogue scale, standard gamble and time trade off methods.
Thurstone’s law of comparative judgement postulates a stable relationship between ordinal and cardinal preferences, based upon the information provided by pairwise choices. McFadden proposed that this relationship could be modelled by estimating conditional logistic regression models where alternatives had been ranked. In this paper we report the estimation of such models for the Health Utilities Index Mark 2 and the SF-6D. The results are compared to the conventional regression models estimated from standard gamble data, and to the observed mean standard gamble health state valuations.
For both the HUI2 and the SF-6D, the models estimated using rank data are broadly comparable to the models estimated on standard gamble data and the predictive performance of these models is close to that of the standard gamble models. Our research indicates that rank data has the potential to provide useful insights into community health state preferences. However, important questions remain
Double-Peaked Narrow-Line Active Galactic Nuclei. II. The Case Of Equal Peaks
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with double-peaked narrow lines (DPAGNs) may be caused by kiloparsec-scale binary AGNs, bipolar outflows, or rotating gaseous disks. We examine the class of DPAGNs in which the two narrow-line components have closely similar intensity as being especially likely to involve disks or jets. Two spectroscopic indicators support this likelihood. For DPAGNs from Smith et al., the "equal-peaked" objects (EPAGNs) have [Ne V]/[O III] ratios lower than for a control sample of non-double-peaked AGNs. This is unexpected for a pair of normal AGNs in a galactic merger, but may be consistent with [O III] emission from a rotating ring with relatively little gas at small radii. Also, [O III]/H beta ratios of the redshifted and blueshifted systems in the EPAGN are more similar to each other than in a control sample, suggestive of a single ionizing source and inconsistent with the binary interpretation.University Cooperative Society of the University of Texas at AustinJane and Roland Blumberg Cenntenial Professorship in AstronomyAlfred P. Design guidelines for assessing and controlling spacecraft charging effects
The need for uniform criteria, or guidelines, to be used in all phases of spacecraft design is discussed. Guidelines were developed for the control of absolute and differential charging of spacecraft surfaces by the lower energy space charged particle environment. Interior charging due to higher energy particles is not considered. A guide to good design practices for assessing and controlling charging effects is presented. Uniform design practices for all space vehicles are outlined
