Traveling Wave Solutions to Fifth- and Seventh-order Korteweg-de Vries Equations: Sech and Cn Solutions
In this paper we review the physical relevance of a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)
equation with higher-order dispersion terms which is used in the applied
sciences and engineering. We also present exact traveling wave solutions to
this generalized KdV equation using an elliptic function method which can be
readily applied to any scalar evolution or wave equation with polynomial terms
involving only odd derivatives. We show that the generalized KdV equation still
supports hump-shaped solitary waves as well as cnoidal wave solutions provided
that the coefficients satisfy specific algebraic constraints.
Analytical solutions in closed form serve as benchmarks for numerical solvers
or comparison with experimental data. They often correspond to homoclinic
orbits in the phase space and serve as separatrices of stable and unstable
regions. Some of the solutions presented in this paper correct, complement, and
illustrate results previously reported in the literature, while others are
novel.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, minor text modifications, updated bibliograph
Growth kinetics of environmental Legionella pneumophila isolated from industrial wastewater
Wastewater treatment plants are environmental niches for Legionella pneumophila, the most commonly identified causative agent of severe pneumonia known as Legionnaire's disease. In the present study, Legionella pneumophila's concentrations were monitored in an industrial wastewater treatment plant and environmental isolates were characterized concerning their growth kinetics with respect to temperature and their inhibition by organic acids and ammonium. The results of the monitoring study showed that Legionella pneumophila occurs in activated sludge tanks operated with very different sludge retention times, 2.5 days in a complete-mix reactor, and 10 days in a membrane bioreactor, indicating that this bacterium can grow at different rates, despite the same wastewater temperature of 35 degrees C. The morphology of Legionella cells is different in both reactors; in the membrane bioreactor, the bacteria grow in clusters, while in the complete-mix reactor, filaments predominate demonstrating a faster growth rate. Legionella pneumophila concentrations in the complete-mix reactor and in the membrane bioreactor were within the range 3 x 10(1) to 4.8 x 10(3) GU/mL and 3 x 10(2) to 4.7 x 10(3) GU/mL, respectively. Environmental Legionella pneumophila SG2-14 isolates showed distinct temperature preferences. The lowest growth rate was observed at 28 degrees C, and the highest 0.34 d(-1) was obtained at 42 degrees C. The presence of high concentrations of organic acids and ammonium found in anaerobically pre-treated wastewater caused growth inhibition. Despite the increasing research efforts, the mechanisms governing the growth of Legionella pneumophila in wastewater treatment plants are still unclear. New innovative strategies to prevent the proliferation of this bacterium in wastewater are in demand
Thermoelectric and Magnetothermoelectric Transport Measurements of Graphene
The conductance and thermoelectric power (TEP) of graphene is simultaneously
measured using microfabricated heater and thermometer electrodes. The sign of
the TEP changes across the charge neutrality point as the majority carrier
density switches from electron to hole. The gate dependent conductance and TEP
exhibit a quantitative agreement with the semiclassical Mott relation. In the
quantum Hall regime at high magnetic field, quantized thermopower and Nernst
signals are observed and are also in agreement with the generalized Mott
relation, except for strong deviations near the charge neutrality point
Penentuan Kadmium Dalam Produk Perikanan Dengan Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

IP Modularity: Profiting from Innovation by Aligning Product Architecture with Intellectual Property
Distributed value creation can boost the overall value created, but may create serious challenges for capturing value. In order to draw in external contributors, an innovator often waives legal exclusion rights or reveals formerly exclusive knowledge. But as a result, contributors may appropriate a large share of the jointly created value. In turn, integrating external contributions entails the risk of becoming dependent on outside owners of IP. To address this tension we propose the concept of “IP modularity.” We argue that, by managing a system’s modular structure in conjunction with its IP, firms can reconcile distributed innovation with value capture
Leptogenesis from Pseudo-Scalar Driven Inflation
We examine recent claims for a considerable amount of leptogenesis, in some
inflationary scenarios, through the gravitational anomaly in the lepton number
current. We find that when the short distances contributions are properly
included the amount of lepton number generated is actually much smaller.Comment: JHEP style, 11 pages. Corrected typ

The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets. IX. Exoplanets orbiting HD 100777, HD 190647, and HD 221287
The HARPS high-resolution high-accuracy spectrograph is offered to the
astronomical community since the second half of 2003. Since then, we have been
using this instrument for monitoring radial velocities of a large sample of
Solar-type stars (~1400 stars) in order to search for their possible low-mass
companions. Amongst the goals of our survey, one is to significantly increase
the number of detected extra-solar planets in a volume-limited sample to
improve our knowledge of their orbital elements distributions and thus obtain
better constraints for planet-formation models.
In this paper, we present the HARPS radial-velocity data and orbital
solutions for 3 Solar-type stars: HD 100777, HD 190647, and HD 221287. The
radial-velocity data of HD 100777 is best explained by the presence of a 1.1
M_Jup planetary companion on a 384--day eccentric orbit (e=0.36). The orbital
fit obtained for the slightly evolved star HD 190647 reveals the presence of a
long-period (P=1038 d) 1.9 M_Jup planetary companion on a moderately eccentric
orbit (e=0.18). HD 221287 is hosting a 3.1 M_Jup planet on a 456--day orbit.
The shape of this orbit is not very well constrained because of our non-optimal
temporal coverage and because of the presence of abnormally large residuals. We
find clues for these large residuals to result from spectral line profile
variations probably induced by stellar activity related processes.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, RV data added in paper. A&A in pres
