Differential cross section analysis in kaon photoproduction using associated legendre polynomials
Angular distributions of differential cross sections from the latest CLAS
data sets \cite{bradford}, for the reaction have been analyzed using associated Legendre polynomials. This
analysis is based upon theoretical calculations in Ref. \cite{fasano} where all
sixteen observables in kaon photoproduction can be classified into four
Legendre classes. Each observable can be described by an expansion of
associated Legendre polynomial functions. One of the questions to be addressed
is how many associated Legendre polynomials are required to describe the data.
In this preliminary analysis, we used data models with different numbers of
associated Legendre polynomials. We then compared these models by calculating
posterior probabilities of the models. We found that the CLAS data set needs no
more than four associated Legendre polynomials to describe the differential
cross section data. In addition, we also show the extracted coefficients of the

Phenylethanoid glycosides from Scutellaria galericulata
From the aerial parts of Scutellaria galericulata L., four phenylethanoid glycosides, 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-ethyl-(6-O-caffeoyl)-\beta -D-glucopyranoside (1), calceolarioside B (2), osmanthuside E (3) and martynoside (4), were isolated. The structure elucidations of the isolated compounds were performed by spectroscopic (UV, IR, ESI-MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR) methods. Compounds 1-4 demonstrated scavenging properties toward the 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical in TLC autographic assays
The Keck Aperture Masking Experiment: spectro-interferometry of 3 Mira Variables from 1.1 to 3.8 microns
We present results from a spectro-interferometric study of the Miras o Cet, R
Leo and W Hya obtained with the Keck Aperture Masking Experiment from 1998 Sep
to 2002 Jul. The spectrally dispersed visibility data permit fitting with
circularly symmetric brightness profiles such as a simple uniform disk. The
stellar angular diameter obtained over up to ~ 450 spectral channels spaning
the region 1.1-3.8 microns is presented. Use of a simple uniform disk
brightness model facilitates comparison between epochs and with existing data
and theoretical models. Strong size variations with wavelength were recorded
for all stars, probing zones of H2O, CO, OH, and dust formation. Comparison
with contemporaneous spectra extracted from our data show a strong
anti-correlation between the observed angular diameter and flux. These
variations consolidate the notion of a complex stellar atmosphere consisting of
molecular shells with time-dependent densities and temperatures. Our findings
are compared with existing data and pulsation models. The models were found to
reproduce the functional form of the wavelength vs. angular diameter curve

The Ages of A-Stars I: Interferometric Observations and Age Estimates for Stars in the Ursa Major Moving Group
We have observed and spatially resolved a set of seven A-type stars in the
nearby Ursa Major moving group with the Classic, CLIMB, and PAVO beam combiners
on the CHARA Array. At least four of these stars have large rotational
velocities ( 170 ) and are expected to
be oblate. These interferometric measurements, the stars' observed photometric
energy distributions, and values are used to computationally
construct model oblate stars from which stellar properties (inclination,
rotational velocity, and the radius and effective temperature as a function of
latitude, etc.) are determined. The results are compared with MESA stellar
evolution models (Paxton et al. 2011, 2013) to determine masses and ages. The
value of this new technique is that it enables the estimation of the
fundamental properties of rapidly rotating stars without the need to fully
image the star. It can thus be applied to stars with sizes comparable to the
interferometric resolution limit as opposed to those that are several times
larger than the limit. Under the assumption of coevality, the spread in ages
can be used as a test of both the prescription presented here and the MESA
evolutionary code for rapidly rotating stars. With our validated technique, we
combine these age estimates and determine the age of the moving group to be 414
23 Myr, which is consistent with, but much more precise than previous

Cytotoxic bromoindole derivatives and terpenes from the Philippine marine sponge Smenospongia sp.
A detailed chemical analysis of a Philippine marine sponge Smenospongia sp. has been performed. This study yielded four new metabolites, 5-bromo-l-tryptophan (1), 5-bromoabrine (2), 5,6-dibromoabrine (3) and 5-bromoindole-3-acetic acid (4). The pyrroloiminoquinone alkaloid, makaluvamine O (5) as well as 5,6-dibromotryptamine (6), aureol (7) and furospinulosin 1 (8) were also isolated. Although 1 and 4 have been synthesized previously, this is the first report on the isolation of these compounds from a natural source. The furanosesterterpene
furospinulosin 1 (8) was obtained for the first time from the genus Smenospongia.
The structures of all compounds were established by spectroscopic methods (UV, IR,
1D and 2D NMR, MS, [α]D). The cytotoxic potential of 1Ð8 was evaluated in a panel of
isogenic HCT-116 human colon tumor cell lines

Hearing aids do not alter cortical entrainment to speech at audible levels in mild-to-moderately hearing-impaired subjects
Background: Cortical entrainment to speech correlates with speech intelligibility and attention to a speech stream in noisy environments. However, there is a lack of data on whether cortical entrainment can help in evaluating hearing aid fittings for subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss. One particular problem that may arise is that hearing aids may alter the speech stimulus during (pre-)processing steps, which might alter cortical entrainment to the speech. Here, the effect of hearing aid processing on cortical entrainment to running speech in hearing impaired subjects was investigated.
Methodology: Seventeen native English-speaking subjects with mild-to-moderate hearing loss participated in the study. Hearing function and hearing aid fitting were evaluated using standard clinical procedures. Participants then listened to a 25-minute audiobook under aided and unaided conditions at 70 dB A sound pressure level (SPL) in quiet conditions. EEG data were collected using a 32-channel system. Cortical entrainment to speech was evaluated using decoders reconstructing the speech envelope from the EEG data. Null decoders, obtained from EEG and the time-reversed speech envelope, were used to assess the chance level reconstructions. Entrainment in the delta- (1-4 Hz) and theta- (4-8 Hz) band, as well as wideband (1-20 Hz) EEG data was investigated.
Results: Significant cortical responses could be detected for all but one subject in all three frequency bands under both aided and unaided conditions. However, no significant differences could be found between the two conditions in the number of responses detected, nor in the strength of cortical entrainment. The results show that the relatively small change in speech input provided by the hearing aid was not sufficient to elicit a detectable change in cortical entrainment.
Conclusion: For subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss, cortical entrainment to speech in quiet at an audible level is not affected by hearing aids. These results clear the pathway for exploring the potential to use cortical entrainment to running speech for evaluating hearing aid fitting at lower speech intensities (which could be inaudible when unaided), or using speech in noise conditions
A micromechanical investigation of diagenetically-induced changes to the anisotropic elastic properties of calcareous mudstones
Microscale diagenetic changes that occur during burial exert a profound influence on the elastic and mechanical properties of sediments—but are poorly quantified. The focus here is on how diagenesis influences the elastic properties of carbonate-rich mudstones, which are subject to a wide range of physical and chemical changes. Nanoindentation data for gas-window (180 C) Eagle Ford formation samples give intrinsic indentation moduli of the clay-sized calcite matrix of 40–50 GPa, which contrasts with 60–77 GPa for diagenetic calcite fills of foraminifera tests, closer to values for highly crystalline calcite. The matrix calcite is weakly anisotropic. Inverse analysis of immature (< 70 C) organic-rich chalks gives much lower intrinsic indentation moduli for biogenic calcite, between 17 and 30 GPa; the calcite is also more anisotropic, with values of 1.3. Diagenesis, which includes recrystallisation and pore-filling cementation, results in calcite becoming elastically stiffer and behaving in an increasingly isotropic manner, in agreement with grain scale studies using atomic force microscopy. The results demonstrate that nanoindentation can resolve diagenetic contributions to the mechanical response of mudstones, and suggest intrinsic structural changes to calcite, in addition to diagenetic cementation, need to be accounted for in rock-physics models of mud-rich sediments
Long-Baseline Interferometric Multiplicity Survey of the Sco-Cen OB Association
We present the first multiplicity-dedicated long baseline optical
interferometric survey of the Scorpius-Centaurus-Lupus-Crux association. We
used the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer to undertake a survey for new
companions to 58 Sco-Cen B- type stars and have detected 24 companions at
separations ranging from 7-130mas, 14 of which are new detections. Furthermore,
we use a Bayesian analysis and all available information in the literature to
determine the multiplicity distribution of the 58 stars in our sample, showing
that the companion frequency is F = 1.35 and the mass ratio distribution is
best described as a power law with exponent equal to -0.46, agreeing with
previous Sco-Cen high mass work and differing significantly from lower-mass
stars in Tau-Aur. Based on our analysis, we estimate that among young B-type
stars in moving groups, up to 23% are apparently single stars. This has strong
implications for the understanding of high-mass star formation, which requires
angular momentum dispersal through some mechanism such as formation of multiple
