    Management and radiographic outcomes of femoral head fractures.

    BackgroundFemoral head fractures are uncommon injuries. Small series constitute the majority of the available literature. Surgical approach and fracture management is variable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, method of treatment, and outcomes of consecutive femoral head fractures at a regional academic Level I trauma center.Materials and methodsA retrospective review of a prospective database was performed over a 13-year period. All AO/OTA 31C femoral head fractures were identified. A surgical approach and fixation method was recorded. Clinical and radiographic evaluation was performed for patients with 6 months or greater follow-up. Radiographs were evaluated for fixation failure, heterotopic ossification (HO), avascular necrosis (AVN) and post-traumatic arthritis.ResultsWe identified 164 fractures in 163 patients; 147 fractures were available for review. Treatment was operative reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in 78 (53.1%), fragment excision in 37 (25.1%) and non-operative in 28 (19%). An anterior approach and mini-fragment screws were used in the majority of patients treated with fixation. Sixty-nine fractures had follow-up greater than 6 months. Sixty-two fractures (89.9%) proceeded to uneventful union. All Pipkin III fractures failed operative fixation. Six patients developed AVN, seven patients had a known conversion to hip arthroplasty; HO developed in 28 (40.6%) patients and rarely required excision.ConclusionsFractures of the femoral head are rare. An anterior approach can be used for fragment excision or fixation using mini-fragment screws. Pipkin III fractures represent catastrophic injuries. Non-bridging, asymptomatic HO is common. AVN and posttraumatic degenerative disease of the hip occur but are uncommon.Level of evidenceIV-prognostic

    Adhesive and Rheological Features of Ecofriendly Coatings with Antifouling Properties

    In this work, formulations of "environmentally compatible" silicone-based antifouling, synthesized in the laboratory and based on copper and silver on silica/titania oxides, have been characterized. These formulations are capable of replacing the non-ecological antifouling paints currently available on the market. The texture properties and the morphological analysis of these powders with an antifouling action indicate that their activity is linked to the nanometric size of the particles and to the homogeneous dispersion of the metal on the substrate. The presence of two metal species on the same support limits the formation of nanometric species and, therefore, the formation of homogeneous compounds. The presence of the antifouling filler, specifically the one based on titania (TiO2) and silver (Ag), facilitates the achievement of a higher degree of cross-linking of the resin, and therefore, a better compactness and completeness of the coating than that attained with the pure resin. Thus, a high degree of adhesion to the tie-coat and, consequently, to the steel support used for the construction of the boats was achieved in the presence of the silver-titania antifouling

    Agri-Food Wastes for Bioplastics: European Prospective on Possible Applications in Their Second Life for a Circular Economy

    Agri-food wastes (such as brewer’s spent grain, olive pomace, residual pulp from fruit juice production, etc.) are produced annually in very high quantities posing a serious problem, both environmentally and economically. These wastes can be used as secondary starting materials to produce value-added goods within the principles of the circular economy. In this context, this review focuses on the use of agri-food wastes either to produce building blocks for bioplastics manufacturing or biofillers to be mixed with other bioplastics. The pros and cons of the literature analysis have been highlighted, together with the main aspects related to the production of bioplastics, their use and recycling. The high number of European Union (EU)-funded projects for the valorisation of agri-food waste with the best European practices for this industrial sector confirm a growing interest in safeguarding our planet from environmental pollution. However, problems such as the correct labelling and separation of bioplastics from fossil ones remain open and to be optimised, with the possibility of reuse before final composting and selective recovery of biomass

    wetting ability modifications in biocompatible polymers induced by pulsed lasers

    Wetting ability was measured in the surface of different biocompatible polymers, such as mylar, polyethylene, poly-methyl-methacrylate and teflon. Nanosecond pulse lasers at intensities of the order of 108 W/cm2 were employed at different doses to irradiate the polymeric surfaces and to induce wetting ability modifications due to the chemical and physical surface changes vs. irradiation time and laser wavelength. In particular, the contact angle as a function of the surface roughness was investigated, as will be presented and discussed

    Mass Quadrupole Spectrometry for Infrared Laser-Generated Plasmas Detection

    A nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser, operating at the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm and at an intensity of about 10 10 W/cm 2 , was employed to irradiate the Cu 0.4 W 0.6 metallic alloy and the relative pure components (Cu and W) in vacuum to investigate about the ablation. Produced plasmas were characterized in terms of thermal and Coulomb interactions evaluating the equivalent temperatures and acceleration voltages developed in the non-equilibrium plasma core. The particles emission, produced along the normal to the target surface, was investigated by measuring, with the special electrostatic mass quadrupole spectrometer Hiden EQP 300, neutral and ion energy distributions and fitting experimental data with the "Coulomb-Boltzmann-shifted" function. Results indicated that the metal alloy stoichiometry, in a first approximation, is well transported to the ion and neutral stoichiometry of the plasma

    Chemical and physical modifications of polyethylene containing nanostructures

    The polyethylene is an interesting polymer with a good mechanical strength, ductility, biocompatibility and chemical inertia. It founds several applications in many fields, such as chemistry, engineering, bio-medicine and micro-electronics. The polyethylene chemical and physical properties can be modified embedding different nanostructures in its bulk. Carbon nanotubes, metallic oxides, coloured pigments and other species can be inserted at different concentrations in the polymer material during the preparation phase of thin films and sheets. Mechanical, optical, thermal and chemical properties can be modified significantly depending on the filler concentration. The absorption coefficient at different radiations can be controlled by the amount of doping structure. In the visible region, for example, the high transparency of pure polyethylene can be strongly reduced by low concentrations of carbon nanotubes. The colour, the mechanical resistance, the wet ability of the polyethylene and other parameters can be changed by the doping species in order to prepare special devices useful for many applications
