Numerical Simulations of Equatorially-Asymmetric Magnetized Supernovae: Formation of Magnetars and Their Kicks
A series of numerical simulations on magnetorotational core-collapse
supernovae are carried out. Dipole-like configurations which are offset
northward are assumed for the initially strong magnetic fields together with
rapid differential rotations. Aims of our study are to investigate effects of
the offset magnetic field on magnetar kicks and on supernova dynamics. Note
that we study a regime where the proto-neutron star formed after collapse has a
large magnetic field strength approaching that of a ``magnetar'', a highly
magnetized slowly rotating neutron star. As a result, equatorially-asymmetric
explosions occur with a formation of the bipolar jets. Resultant magnetar's
kick velocities are km s. We find that the acceleration
is mainly due to the magnetic pressure while the somewhat weaker magnetic
tension works toward the opposite direction, which is due to stronger magnetic
field in the northern hemisphere. Noted that observations of magnetar's proper
motions are very scarce, our results supply a prediction for future
observations. Namely, magnetars possibly have large kick velocities, several
hundred km s, as ordinary neutron stars do, and in an extreme case they

High resolution Compton scattering as a Probe of the Fermi surface in the Iron-based superconductor
We have carried out first principles all-electron calculations of the
(001)-projected 2D electron momentum density and the directional Compton
profiles along the [100], [001] and [110] directions in the Fe-based
superconductor LaOFeAs within the framework of the local density approximation.
We identify Fermi surface features in the 2D electron momentum density and the
directional Compton profiles, and discuss issues related to the observation of

Jungle Honey Enhances Immune Function and Antitumor Activity
Jungle honey (JH) is collected from timber and blossom by wild honey bees that live in the tropical forest of Nigeria. JH is used as a traditional medicine for colds, skin inflammation and burn wounds as well as general health care. However, the effects of JH on immune functions are not clearly known. Therefore, we investigated the effects of JH on immune functions and antitumor activity in mice. Female C57BL/6 mice were injected with JH (1 mg/mouse/day, seven times intra-peritoneal). After seven injections, peritoneal cells (PC) were obtained. Antitumor activity was assessed by growth of Lewis Lung Carcinoma/2 (LL/2) cells. PC numbers were increased in JH-injected mice compared to control mice. In Dot Plot analysis by FACS, a new cell population appeared in JH-injected mice. The percent of Gr-1 surface antigen and the intensity of Gr-1 antigen expression of PC were increased in JH-injected mice. The new cell population was neutrophils. JH possessed chemotactic activity for neutrophils. Tumor incidence and weight were decreased in JH-injected mice. The ratio of reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing cells was increased in JH-injected mice. The effective component in JH was fractionized by gel filtration using HPLC and had an approximate molecular weight (MW) of 261. These results suggest that neutrophils induced by JH possess potent antitumor activity mediated by ROS and the effective immune component of JH is substrate of MW 261
Neutrino mean free paths in spin-polarized neutron Fermi liquids
Neutrino mean free paths in magnetized neutron matter are calculated using
the Hartree-Fock approximation with effective Skyrme and Gogny forces in the
framework of the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory. It is shown that describing
nuclear interaction with Skyrme forces and for magnetic field strengths
, the neutrino mean free paths stay almost unchanged
at intermediate densities but they largely increase at high densities when they
are compared to the field-free case results. However the description with Gogny
forces differs from the previous and mean free paths stay almonst unchanged or
decrease at densities . This different behaviour can be explained
due to the combination of common mild variation of the Landau parameters with
both types of forces and the values of the nucleon effective mass and induced
magnetization of matter under presence of a strong magnetic field as described
with the two parametrizations of the nuclear interaction.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
White dwarf spins from low mass stellar evolution models
The prediction of the spins of the compact remnants is a fundamental goal of
the theory of stellar evolution. Here, we confront the predictions for white
dwarf spins from evolutionary models including rotation with observational
constraints. We perform stellar evolution calculations for stars in the mass
range 1... 3\mso, including the physics of rotation, from the zero age main
sequence into the TP-AGB stage. We calculate two sets of model sequences, with
and without inclusion of magnetic fields. From the final computed models of
each sequence, we deduce the angular momenta and rotational velocities of the
emerging white dwarfs. While models including magnetic torques predict white
dwarf rotational velocities between 2 and 10 km s, those from the
non-magnetic sequences are found to be one to two orders of magnitude larger,
well above empirical upper limits. We find the situation analogous to that in
the neutron star progenitor mass range, and conclude that magnetic torques may
be required in order to understand the slow rotation of compact stellar

Biphasic effect of extracellular ATP on human and rat airways is due to multiple P2 purinoceptor activation
BACKGROUND: Extracellular ATP may modulate airway responsiveness. Studies on ATP-induced contraction and [Ca(2+)](i )signalling in airway smooth muscle are rather controversial and discrepancies exist regarding both ATP effects and signalling pathways. We compared the effect of extracellular ATP on rat trachea and extrapulmonary bronchi (EPB) and both human and rat intrapulmonary bronchi (IPB), and investigated the implicated signalling pathways. METHODS: Isometric contraction was measured on rat trachea, EPB and IPB isolated rings and human IPB isolated rings. [Ca(2+)](i )was monitored fluorimetrically using indo 1 in freshly isolated and cultured tracheal myocytes. Statistical comparisons were done with ANOVA or Student's t tests for quantitative variables and χ(2 )tests for qualitative variables. Results were considered significant at P < 0.05. RESULTS: In rat airways, extracellular ATP (10(-6)–10(-3 )M) induced an epithelium-independent and concentration-dependent contraction, which amplitude increased from trachea to IPB. The response was transient and returned to baseline within minutes. Similar responses were obtained with the non-hydrolysable ATP analogous ATP-γ-S. Successive stimulations at 15 min-intervals decreased the contractile response. In human IPB, the contraction was similar to that of rat IPB but the time needed for the return to baseline was longer. In isolated myocytes, ATP induced a concentration-dependent [Ca(2+)](i )response. The contractile response was not reduced by thapsigargin and RB2, a P2Y receptor inhibitor, except in rat and human IPB. By contrast, removal of external Ca(2+), external Na(+ )and treatment with D600 decreased the ATP-induced response. The contraction induced by α-β-methylene ATP, a P2X agonist, was similar to that induced by ATP, except in IPB where it was lower. Indomethacin and H-89, a PKA inhibitor, delayed the return to baseline in extrapulmonary airways. CONCLUSION: Extracellular ATP induces a transient contractile response in human and rat airways, mainly due to P2X receptors and extracellular Ca(2+ )influx in addition with, in IPB, P2Y receptors stimulation and Ca(2+ )release from intracellular Ca(2+ )stores. Extracellular Ca(2+ )influx occurs through L-type voltage-dependent channels activated by external Na(+ )entrance through P2X receptors. The transience of the response cannot be attributed to ATP degradation but to purinoceptor desensitization and, in extrapulmonary airways, prostaglandin-dependent PKA activation

Personal ethical settings for driverless cars and the utility paradox: An ethical analysis of public attitudes in UK and Japan
Driverless cars are predicted to dramatically reduce collisions and casualties on the roads. However, there has been controversy about how they should be programmed to respond in the event of an unavoidable collision. Should they aim to save the most lives, prioritise the lives of pedestrians, or occupants of the vehicle? Some have argued that driverless cars should all be programmed to minimise total casualties. While this would appear to have wide international public support, previous work has also suggested regional variation and public reluctance to purchase driverless cars with such a mandated ethical setting. The possibility that algorithms designed to minimise collision fatalities would lead to reduced consumer uptake of driverless cars and thereby to higher overall road deaths, represents a potential "utility paradox". To investigate this paradox further, we examined the views of the general public about driverless cars in two online surveys in the UK and Japan, examining the influence of choice of a "personal ethical setting" as well as of framing on hypothetical purchase decisions. The personal ethical setting would allow respondents to choose between a programme which would save the most lives, save occupants or save pedestrians. We found striking differences between UK and Japanese respondents. While a majority of UK respondents wished to buy driverless cars that prioritise the most lives or their family members' lives, Japanese survey participants preferred to save pedestrians. We observed reduced willingness to purchase driverless cars with a mandated ethical setting (compared to offering choice) in both countries. It appears that the public values relevant to programming of driverless cars differ between UK and Japan. The highest uptake of driverless cars in both countries can be achieved by providing a personal ethical setting. Since uptake of driverless cars (rather than specific algorithm used) is potentially the biggest factor in reducing in traffic related accidents, providing some choice of ethical settings may be optimal for driverless cars according to a range of plausible ethical theories
