On the Problem of Inference for Inequality Measures for Heavy-Tailed Distributions
The received wisdom about inference problems for inequality measures is that these are caused by the presence of extremes in samples drawn from heavy-tailed distributions. We show that this is incorrect since the density of the studentised inequality measure is heavily skewed to the left, and the excessive coverage failures of the usual confidence intervals are associated with low estimates of both the point measure and the variance. For further diagnostics the coefficients of bias, skewness and kurtosis are derived for both studentised and standardised inequality measures, and the explicit cumulant expansions make also available Edgeworth expansions and saddlepoint approximations. In view of the key role played by the estimated variance of the measure, variance stabilising transforms are considered and shown to improve inference. <br><br> Keynames; Inequality measures, inference, statistical performance, asymptotic expansions, variance stabilisation. <br><br> JEL Classification: C10, D31, D63.
The composition of wage differentials between migrants and natives
We consider the role of unobservables, such as differences in search frictions, reservation wages, and productivities for the explanation of wage differentials between migrants and natives. We disentangle these by estimating an empirical general equilibrium search model with on-the-job search due to Bontemps et al. (1999) on segments of the labour market defined by occupation, age, and nationality using a large scale German administrative dataset.
The native-migrant wage differential is then decomposed into several parts, and we focus especially on the component that we label “migrant effect”, being the difference in wage offers between natives and migrants in the same occupation-age segment in firms of the same productivity. Counterfactual decompositions of wage differentials allow us to identify and quantify their drivers, thus explaining within a common framework what is often labelled the unexplained wage gap

Petrographic description of calcite/opal samples collected on field trip of December 5-9, 1992. Special report No. 7
This study is part of the research program of the Yucca Mountain Project intended to provide the State of Nevada with a detailed analysis and assessment of the water-deposited minerals of Yucca Mountain and adjacent regions. Forty-three separate stops were made and 203 samples were collected during the five days of the field trip. This report describes petrographic observations made on the calcite/opal samples
Electronic interactions in fullerene spheres
The electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions inC, and larger fullerene
spheres are analyzed. The coupling between electrons and intramolecular
vibrations give corrections meV to the electronic energies for
C, and scales as in larger molecules. The energies associated
with electrostatic interactions are of order eV, in C and
scale as . Charged fullerenes show enhanced electron-phonon coupling,
meV, which scales as . Finally, it is argued that non only
C, but also C are highly polarizable molecules. The
polarizabilities scale as and , respectively. The role of this large
polarizability in mediating intermolecular interactions is also discussed.Comment: 12 pages. No figure
Midinfrared Conductivity in Orientationally Disordered Doped Fullerides
The coupling between the intramolecular vibrational modes and the doped
conduction electrons in is studied by a calculation of the
electronic contributions to the phonon self energies. The calculations are
carried out for an orientationally ordered reference solid with symmetry and for a model with quenched orientational disorder on the
fullerene sites. In both cases, the dispersion and symmetry of the renormalized
modes is governed by the electronic contributions. The current current
correlation functions and frequency dependent conductivity through the
midinfrared are calculated for both models. In the disordered structures, the
renormalized modes derived from even parity intramolecular phonons are resonant
with the dipole excited single particle spectrum, and modulate the predicted
midinfrared conductivity. The spectra for this coupled system are calculated
for several recently proposed microscopic models for the electron phonon
coupling, and a comparison is made with recent experimental data which

In-Situ Infrared Transmission Study of Rb- and K-Doped Fullerenes
We have measured the four IR active molecular vibrations in
as a function of doping . We observe
discontinuous changes in the vibrational spectra showing four distinct phases
(presumably , and 6). The and modes
show the largest changes shifting downward in frequency in four steps as the
doping increases. Several new very weak modes are visible in the phase
and are possibly Raman modes becoming weakly optically active. We present
quantitative fits of the data and calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the

Energy gap in superconducting fullerides: optical and tunneling studies
Tunneling and optical transmission studies have been performed on
superconducting samples of Rb3C60. At temperatures much below the
superconducting transition temperature Tc the energy gap is 2 Delta=5.2 +-
0.2meV, corresponding to 2 Delta/kB Tc = 4.2. The low temperature density of
states, and the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity resembles
the BCS behavior, although there is an enhanced ``normal state" contribution.
The results indicate that this fulleride material is an s-wave superconductor,
but the superconductivity cannot be described in the weak coupling limit.Comment: RevTex file with four .EPS figures. Prints to four pages. Also

Molecular Architecture and Functional Model of the Complete Yeast ESCRT-I Heterotetramer
SummaryThe endosomal sorting complex required for transport-I (ESCRT-I) complex, which is conserved from yeast to humans, directs the lysosomal degradation of ubiquitinated transmembrane proteins and the budding of the HIV virus. Yeast ESCRT-I contains four subunits, Vps23, Vps28, Vps37, and Mvb12. The crystal structure of the heterotetrameric ESCRT-I complex reveals a highly asymmetric complex of 1:1:1:1 subunit stoichiometry. The core complex is nearly 18 nm long and consists of a headpiece attached to a 13 nm stalk. The stalk is important for cargo sorting by ESCRT-I and is proposed to serve as a spacer regulating the correct disposition of cargo and other ESCRT components. Hydrodynamic constraints and crystallographic structures were used to generate a model of intact ESCRT-I in solution. The results show how ESCRT-I uses a combination of a rigid stalk and flexible tethers to interact with lipids, cargo, and other ESCRT complexes over a span of ∼25 nm
