Breakdown patterns in Branly's coheror
We use thermal imaging of Joule heating to see for the first time electrical
conducting paths created by the so-called Branly effect in a two-dimensional
metallic granular medium (aluminium). Multiple breakdowns are shown to occur
when the medium is submitted to high voltage increases (more than 500 V) with

Analytical Biases Associated with GC-Content in Molecular Evolution.
Molecular evolution is being revolutionized by high-throughput sequencing allowing an increased amount of genome-wide data available for multiple species. While base composition summarized by GC-content is one of the first metrics measured in genomes, its genomic distribution is a frequently neglected feature in downstream analyses based on DNA sequence comparisons. Here, we show how base composition heterogeneity among loci and taxa can bias common molecular evolution analyses such as phylogenetic tree reconstruction, detection of natural selection and estimation of codon usage. We then discuss the biological, technical and methodological causes of these GC-associated biases and suggest approaches to overcome them
Detection of phase singularities with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor
While adaptive optical systems are able to remove moderate wavefront
distortions in scintillated optical beams, phase singularities that appear in
strongly scintillated beams can severely degrade the performance of such an
adaptive optical system. Therefore, the detection of these phase singularities
is an important aspect of strong scintillation adaptive optics. We investigate
the detection of phase singularities with the aid of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront
sensor and show that, in spite of some systematical deficiencies inherent to
the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, it can be used for the reliable detection
of phase singularities, irrespective of their morphologies. We provide full
analytical results, together with numerical simulations of the detection

Internal states of model isotropic granular packings. III. Elastic properties
In this third and final paper of a series, elastic properties of numerically
simulated isotropic packings of spherical beads assembled by different
procedures and subjected to a varying confining pressure P are investigated. In
addition P, which determines the stiffness of contacts by Hertz's law, elastic
moduli are chiefly sensitive to the coordination number, the possible values of
which are not necessarily correlated with the density. Comparisons of numerical
and experimental results for glass beads in the 10kPa-10MPa range reveal
similar differences between dry samples compacted by vibrations and lubricated
packings. The greater stiffness of the latter, in spite of their lower density,
can hence be attributed to a larger coordination number. Voigt and Reuss bounds
bracket bulk modulus B accurately, but simple estimation schemes fail for shear
modulus G, especially in poorly coordinated configurations under low P.
Tenuous, fragile networks respond differently to changes in load direction, as
compared to load intensity. The shear modulus, in poorly coordinated packings,
tends to vary proportionally to the degree of force indeterminacy per unit
volume. The elastic range extends to small strain intervals, in agreement with
experimental observations. The origins of nonelastic response are discussed. We
conclude that elastic moduli provide access to mechanically important
information about coordination numbers, which escape direct measurement
techniques, and indicate further perspectives.Comment: Published in Physical Review E 25 page

Design to reliability shielded vertical interconnection applied to microwave Chip Scale Packaging
This paper presents the electrical design, measurement and reliability ests of a shielded vertical interconnection dedicated to microwave solder-mount packages. Electromagnetic simulations show very good results up to 20 GHz. Test samples have been designed and manufactured. Electrical results are in accordance with the simulations with insertion loss lower than 0.1 dB up to 20 GHz for the proposed interconnection. Reliability tests of present no degradation of the after 500 thermal cycles in the [-55°C, +125°C] temperature range
Defect-mediated turbulence in systems with local deterministic chaos
We show that defect-mediated turbulence can exist in media where the
underlying local dynamics is deterministically chaotic. While many of the
characteristics of defect-mediated turbulence, such as the exponential decay of
correlations and a squared Poissonian distribution for the number of defects,
are identical to those seen in oscillatory media, the fluctuations in the
number of defects differ significantly. The power spectra suggest the existence
of underlying correlations that lead to a different and non-universal scaling

A Study of Activated Processes in Soft Sphere Glass
On the basis of long simulations of a binary mixture of soft spheres just
below the glass transition, we make an exploratory study of the activated
