    Coping Ability of Medical and Nursing Students: A Cause of Concern

    Background: Medical students today are subject to a variety of stress; academic, social, emotional or stress in the form of affliction of health during their stay at medical school. The physiological response to these depends on various factors including their inherent coping abilities. This study was designed to examine the coping ability of medical and nursing students at the time of admission to medical school. Materials and Methods: 42 medical and 34 nursing students volunteered for the study. They were administered the BAI questionnaire and classified as good and poor adjusters based on their score. Results: The study revealed an unsatisfactory overall coping ability to be prevalent among medical and nursing students. Conclusion: This study showed that there is a need for orientation and counselling of medical and nursing students at the start of college

    Interaction of JLP with Plk1 recruits FoxK1 to interact and form a ternary complex

    JLP (JNK associated Leucine zipper protein) is a scaffolding protein, which has been shown to interact with and activate JNK/p38MAPK pathway. Its interaction with various signaling proteins is associated with coordinated regulation of cellular process such as endocytosis, motility, neurite outgrowth, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Here we identified a mitotic Serine/Threonine kinase, Polo like kinase 1 (Plk1), as a novel interaction partner of JLP through a mass spectrometry based approach. We show that the N-terminal domain of JLP interacts with the polo-box domain (PBD) of Plk1 in a phosphorylation-dependent manner. Our results indicate that, JLP is phospho-primed on Thr 351 residue on its Nterminus, which is recognized by the PBD of Plk1 leading to phosphorylation of JLP at additional sites. Moreover, treatment of cells with the Plk1 inhibitor, BI2536 affects the interaction demonstrating the importance of Plk1 kinase activity in this process. Since JLP is a scaffolding protein that recruits proteins to mediate specific cell signaling events, we hypothesized that the interaction of JLP with Plk1 might result in the recruitment of other proteins to this complex. To test this hypothesis, we carried out SILAC labeling of proteins in mitotic cells in the presence or absence of BI2536. Through mass-spectrometry we identified the transcription factor, FoxK1 as a Plk1-dependent JLP-interacting protein. Furthermore, we show that JLP, Plk1 and FoxK1 form a ternary complex, which occurs only during mitosis. Knockdown of Plk1 and not JLP, affected the interaction between JLP and FoxK1 indicating that the formation of the ternary complex is dependent on Plk1. FoxK1 has been previously characterized as a transcriptional repressor of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor, p21/WAF1. We observed that knockdown of JLP in U2OS cells results in increased protein levels of FoxK1 and a reduction of p21 expression. Moreover, immunofluorescence studies in asynchronous cells showed that FoxK1 is excluded from the nucleus during mitosis. Based on our observations, we propose that formation of the ternary complex between JLP, Plk1 and FoxK1 regulates the stability and/or localization of FoxK1

    Survival and growth of juvenile silver pompano Trachinotus blochii (Lacepède, 1801) at different salinities in tropical conditions

    The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the tolerance of juvenile silver pompano to different salinity conditions in order to determine the minimum salinity required for survival and also to study the effect of different salinities on survival and growth. Wild caught juveniles of the silver pompano Trachinotus blochii (average initial length: 4.38±0.44 cm, average initial weight: 1.6±0.09 g) were used in the experiments. The experiments were conducted in triplicate with 15 fish per tank. Control groups were maintained at 34±1 ppt. Juvenile silver pompano reared at ambient salinity (34±1ppt) were transferred directly to lower salinities (25, 15, 10, 5, 4, 3 and 1 ppt) and monitored for survival. Results indicated that the minimum salinity required for the survival of juvenile T. blochii is 4 ppt and 100% mortality was observed within 7-8 h in 1 ppt salinity. In another experiment, three salinity reduction protocols were followed and the three treatment groups were exposed to 25, 15 and 5 ppt salinity for a period of 56 days and the growth and survival were monitored. Survival and growth in terms of weight was not significantly different in the treatments from the control group except in the case of 5 ppt, which showed comparatively lower survival and specific growth rate (SGR). The results indicate that the culture of juvenile pompano might be feasible in salinities up to 15 ppt in tropical conditions

    Note on Occurrence of Jaydia queketti (Osteichthyes: Apogonidae) from the Bycatch of Tropical Trawl Fishery

    Three specimens of apogonids species of total length 72.69, 106.28 and 110.67 mm were caught off Tuticorin at the depths of 90-100 m as a bycatch on 1st January 2013 from the commercial trawler operated from Tuticorin Fishing Harbour, Southeast coast of India. In this paper, on the occurrence of Jaydia queketti was figured and the comprehensive diagnostic features of the recorded specimens were elucidated. The species of this genus Jaydia is distributed continentally and often caught as a bycatch from shrimp or fish trawl. These species are widely distributed in New Guinea, larger islands in the Coral Sea, Australia, Arabian Sea of India and also from Africa to Japan. Nevertheless, the present observation shows the occurrence of J. queketti from the bycatch of trawl fishery operated along Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India

    Effect of quantum confinement on exciton-phonon interactions

    We investigate the homogeneous linewidth of localized type-I excitons in type-II GaAs/AlAs superlattices. These localizing centers represent the intermediate case between quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) and quasi-zero-dimensional localizations. The temperature dependence of the homogeneous linewidth is obtained with high precision from micro-photoluminescence spectra. We confirm the reduced interaction of the excitons with their environment with decreasing dimensionality except for the coupling to LO-phonons. The low-temperature limit for the linewidth of these localized excitons is five times smaller than that of Q2D excitons. The coefficient of exciton-acoustic-phonon interaction is 5 ~ 6 times smaller than that of Q2D excitons. An enhancement of the average exciton-LO-phonon interaction by localization is found in our sample. But this interaction is very sensitive to the detailed structure of the localizing centers.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Logistics service provider selection for disaster preparation: a socio-technical systems perspective

    Since 1990s, the world has seen a lot of advances in providing humanitarian aid through sophisticated logistics operations. The current consensus seems to be that humanitarian relief organizations (HROs) can improve their relief operations by collaborating with logistics service providers (CLSPs) in the commercial sector. The question remains: how can HROs select the most appropriate CLSP for disaster preparation? Despite its practical significance, no explicit effort has been done to identify the criteria/factors in prioritising and selecting a CLSP for disaster relief. The present study aims to address this gap by consolidating the list of criteria from a socio-technical systems (STS) perspective. Then, to handle the interdependence among the criteria derived from the STS, we develop a hybrid multi-criteria decision making model for CLSP selection in the disaster preparedness stage. The proposed model is then evaluated by a real-life case study, providing insights into the decision-makers in both HROs and CLSPs

    Broodstock development through regulation of photoperiod and controlled breeding of silver pompano, Trachinotus blochii (Lacepede, 1801) in India

    The silver pompano, Trachinotus blochii is recognised as a promising species for mariculture. In India, broodstock development, controlled breeding and seed production of silver pompano was achieved for the first time at Mandapam Regional Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. Sub-adult fishes collected from the wild were grown in circular sea cages of 6 m diameter and 3.5 m depth. Twelve fishes were selected from a sea cage and acclimatized to laboratory conditions. Among these, four fishes (1 female and 3 males) were pre-conditioned to sexual maturity in a 10 t FRP tank with photoperiod control facility (2000 lux; 14 L: 10 D). In about 2 months, the gonads reached right stage for spawning. The brooders were administered human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) intramuscularly, at a dosage of 350 IU kg body weight-1. A total of 5 experiments were conducted and successful spawnings were obtained resulting in the production of fertilized eggs. The time taken for spawning ranged from 30-36 h. The total number of eggs spawned ranged from 0.08 to 0.184 million. The fertilization percentage varied from 75 to 95. Freshly spawned eggs measured above 900 μ. The success obtained in all the consecutive five experiments indicated that predictable spawnings of pompano could be achieved by employing the techniques developed

    FAILURE MODES AND EFFECTS ANALYSIS OF DRIVING MECHANISM IN HORIZONTAL PLANNING MACHINE

    In this paper the failure analysis and optimization of horizontal mechanism in a horizontal planning machine rack and pinion arrangement is needed for the translation movement. The relative motion between the fixed and movable bed are being in friction with the ability of V guide ways. And the drive of this mechanism is rack and pinion arrangement. In general, wear occurring in V-Guides ways and drive mechanism are not equal. So that, the variation of the wear amount should affect the surface level of to be machined component. The failure is rectified to implement the new mechanism (arrangement) in driven portion of the horizontal mechanism. The main concept of this paper is that the surface level of the machined component has to be fine. The modification of the mechanism is to change the position of gear rack and pinion. In existing, the gear tooth is in horizontal and crosswise to the guide ways. Instead of that, the gear tooth is perpendicular to the guide ways. If the wear occurred in this modified one, the gear engaging length will increase. The modified mechanism does not affect the addendum and dedundum of the gear profile
