    Alcohol between the covers: The portrayal of alcohol in online versions of magazines read by young women

    Health authorities advise that teenagers should have no alcohol due to its dangerous effects (Hickie and Whitwell 2009). Despite this, alcohol is a dominant patt of Australian culture and teenage girls are increasingly drinking at high risk levels and placing themselves at risk of long-term harm (Chikritzhs 2004). While many studies have investigated the link between alcoho I advertising and teenage drinking, few studies have looked outside of advertising, particularly at editorial. A content analysis was conducted looking at alcohol related content in non-advertising material in the online versions of four Australian magazines directed at young women. Mention of alcohol was found in all four magazines with three magazines linking alcohol to celebrities and others with source credibility

    An evaluation of Skylab (EREP) remote sensing techniques applied to investigations of crustal structure

    The author has identified the following significant results. Film positives (70mm) from all six S190A multispectral photographic camera stations for any one scene can be registered and analyzed in a color additive viewer. Using a multispectral viewer, S190A and B films can be projected directly onto published geologic and topographic maps at scales as large as 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 without significant loss of detail. S190A films and prints permit the detection of faults, fractures, and other linear features not visible in any other space imagery. S192 MSS imagery can be useful for rock-type discrimination studies and delineation of linear patterns and arcuate anomalies. Anomalous color reflectances and arcuate color patterns revealed mineralized zones, copper deposits, vegetation, and volcanic rocks in various locations such as Panamint Range (CA), Greenwater (Death Valley), Lava Mountains (CA), northwestern Arizona, and Coso Hot Springs (CA)

    Modelling the evaporation of nanoparticle suspensions from heterogeneous surfaces

    We present a Monte Carlo (MC) grid-based model for the drying of drops of a nanoparticle suspension upon a heterogeneous surface. The model consists of a generalised lattice-gas in which the interaction parameters in the Hamiltonian can be varied to model different properties of the materials involved. We show how to choose correctly the interactions, to minimise the effects of the underlying grid so that hemispherical droplets form. We also include the effects of surface roughness to examine the effects of contact-line pinning on the dynamics. When there is a `lid' above the system, which prevents evaporation, equilibrium drops form on the surface, which we use to determine the contact angle and how it varies as the parameters of the model are changed. This enables us to relate the interaction parameters to the materials used in applications. The model has also been applied to drying on heterogeneous surfaces, in particular to the case where the suspension is deposited on a surface consisting of a pair of hydrophilic conducting metal surfaces that are either side of a band of hydrophobic insulating polymer. This situation occurs when using inkjet printing to manufacture electrical connections between the metallic parts of the surface. The process is not always without problems, since the liquid can dewet from the hydrophobic part of the surface, breaking the bridge before the drying process is complete. The MC model reproduces the observed dewetting, allowing the parameters to be varied so that the conditions for the best connection can be established. We show that if the hydrophobic portion of the surface is located at a step below the height of the neighbouring metal, the chance of dewetting of the liquid during the drying process is significantly reduced.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

    Mean-field dynamical density functional theory

    We examine the out-of-equilibrium dynamical evolution of density profiles of ultrasoft particles under time-varying external confining potentials in three spatial dimensions. The theoretical formalism employed is the dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) of Marini Bettolo Marconi and Tarazona [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 110}, 8032 (1999)], supplied by an equilibrium excess free energy functional that is essentially exact. We complement our theoretical analysis by carrying out extensive Brownian Dynamics simulations. We find excellent agreement between theory and simulations for the whole time evolution of density profiles, demonstrating thereby the validity of the DDFT when an accurate equilibrium free energy functional is employed.Comment: 8 pagers, 4 figure

    Dynamical density functional theory for dense atomic liquids

    Starting from Newton's equations of motion, we derive a dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) applicable to atomic liquids. The theory has the feature that it requires as input the Helmholtz free energy functional from equilibrium density functional theory. This means that, given a reliable equilibrium free energy functional, the correct equilibrium fluid density profile is guaranteed. We show that when the isothermal compressibility is small, the DDFT generates the correct value for the speed of sound in a dense liquid. We also interpret the theory as a dynamical equation for a coarse grained fluid density and show that the theory can be used (making further approximations) to derive the standard mode coupling theory that is used to describe the glass transition. The present theory should provide a useful starting point for describing the dynamics of inhomogeneous atomic fluids.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte

    Morphogenetic Theory and the Constructivist Institutionalist Challenge

    This article engages with two meta-theoretical approaches to social analysis, ‘morphogenetic theory’ and ‘constructivist institutionalism’, and specifically explores how the former fares under the critical scrutiny of the latter. The key proponent of constructivist institutionalism, Colin Hay, has offered two detailed critiques of morphogenesis that criticise its position on the foundational sociological issues of structure-agency and material-ideational. Although Hay’s critiques are largely rejected in an overall defence of the morphogenetic approach, the process of engagement is seen to be particularly useful for morphogenetic theory because it allows a number of important clarifications to be made and it also opens up space for theoretical development. In the course of this debate, accessible introductions are given to both theories, and the similarities and differences between them are outlined, providing clarity to both. Therefore, although this article ultimately operates as a defence of morphogenetic theory, especially in the form proposed by Margaret Archer and Douglas Porpora, it finds a great deal of fruitful discussion in the constructivist institutionalist challenge

    Factors influencing the implementation of Global Polio Eradication Initiative in low- and middle-income countries : a qualitative evidence synthesis

    Background The World Health Organization’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has succeeded in reducing the cases of Polio by 99%. The persistence of the remaining 1% in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria has continued to pose threats to polio-free neighbouring countries. This systematic review aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to eradicate polio by exploring factors that influence the successful implementation of the GPEI in low- and middle-income countries. Methods We reviewed qualitative research or mixed methods study reports published between 2012-2018 from studies conducted in low- and middle-income countries. We extracted qualitative research data using a standardised data extraction form and assessed study quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) qualitative checklist. We then conducted best-fit framework synthesis to organise, and explore patterns in, the data relating to new and existing themes. We report data on factors influencing the implementation of polio eradication efforts organised by theme. Results We included 11 studies published between 2012 and 2017. Most of the studies were conducted in Pakistan and Nigeria with other countries (Ethiopia, Cameroon, Angola) also represented. The ten themes included structural factors (the development of capacity, through infrastructure and training) and attitudinal factors (including cultural and religious beliefs), were particularly important given the characteristics of included low- and middle-income countries. Common factors emerged across the included studies and generally these mapped well to the underpinning “best fit” framework. Conclusions This qualitative evidence synthesis offers a useful expanded framework by which policymakers can explore factors specific to their geographical and population-based context although it should be recognised that individual factors relating to personal values and belief systems may moderate any community response to a polio vaccination programme

Penises are also much more complex than their fundamental function — sperm transfer — would seem to require. The rapid divergent evolution of male structures is typically the signature of traits under sexual selection and the current evidence suggests the penis is no different in this regard. Despite the general agreement that sexual selection is the main driver of penis evolution, many questions about penis evolution remain unresolved. Furthermore, the penis might be an ideal characteristic on which to focus in the drive to link phenotype with genotype
