    Management Accountant's Role and Functions in the Enterprise Resource Planning Environment - Author's Own Research into Enterprises in Poland

    This article seeks to answer whether the implementation of an ERP system has an effect on the management accountant's tasks and functions, especially in the field of performance measurement and internal reporting. The ERP impacts on the controller's role in the organization will be evaluated using field studies on six enterprises owned by multinational corporations.     A reflection on motor overflow, mirror phenomena, synkinesia and entrainment

    In patients with movement disorders, voluntary movements can sometimes be accompanied by unintentional muscle contractions in other body regions. In this review, we discuss clinical and pathophysiological aspects of several motor phenomena including mirror movements, dystonic overflow, synkinesia, entrainment and mirror dystonia, focusing on their similarities and differences. These phenomena share some common clinical and pathophysiological features, which often leads to confusion in their definition. However, they differ in several aspects, such as the body part showing the undesired movement, the type of this movement (identical or not to the intentional movement), the underlying neurological condition, and the role of primary motor areas, descending pathways and inhibitory circuits involved, suggesting that these are distinct phenomena. We summarize the main features of these fascinating clinical signs aiming to improve the clinical recognition and standardize the terminology in research studies. We also suggest that the term “mirror dystonia” may be not appropriate to describe this peculiar phenomenon which may be closer to dystonic overflow rather than to the classical mirror movements

    Improving Taxonomic Delimitation of Fungal Species in the Age of Genomics and Phenomics

    Species concepts have long provided a source of debate among biologists. These lively debates have been important for reaching consensus on how to communicate across scientific disciplines and for advancing innovative strategies to study evolution, population biology, ecology, natural history, and disease epidemiology. Species concepts are also important for evaluating variability and diversity among communities, understanding biogeographical distributions, and identifying causal agents of disease across animal and plant hosts. While there have been many attempts to address the concept of species in the fungi, there are several concepts that have made taxonomic delimitation especially challenging. In this review we discuss these major challenges and describe methodological approaches that show promise for resolving ambiguity in fungal taxonomy by improving discrimination of genetic and functional traits. We highlight the relevance of eco-evolutionary theory used in conjunction with integrative taxonomy approaches to improve the understanding of interactions between environment, ecology, and evolution that give rise to distinct species boundaries. Beyond recent advances in genomic and phenomic methods, bioinformatics tools and modeling approaches enable researchers to test hypothesis and expand our knowledge of fungal biodiversity. Looking to the future, the pairing of integrative taxonomy approaches with multi-locus genomic sequencing and phenomic techniques, such as transcriptomics and proteomics, holds great potential to resolve many unknowns in fungal taxonomic classification

    Schwann cells are key players in neuro-regeneration: They sense "alarm" signals released by degenerating nerve terminals and differentiate toward a proregenerative phenotype, with phagocytosis of nerve debris and nerve guidance. At the murine neuromuscular junction, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a key signal of Schwann cells' activation in response to a variety of nerve injuries. Here we report that Schwann cells exposed to low doses of H2O2 rewire the expression of several RNAs at both transcriptional and translational levels. Among the genes positively regulated at both levels, we identified an enriched cluster involved in cytoskeleton remodeling and cell migration, with the Annexin (Anxa) proteins being the most represented family. We show that both Annexin A2 (Anxa2) transcript and protein accumulate at the tips of long pseudopods that Schwann cells extend upon H2O2 exposure. Interestingly, Schwann cells reply to this signal and to nerve injury by locally translating Anxa2 in pseudopods, and undergo an extensive cytoskeleton remodeling. Our results show that, similarly to neurons, Schwann cells take advantage of local protein synthesis to change shape and move toward damaged axonal terminals to facilitate axonal regeneration

    Misfat al-‘Abriyin, Oman. Designing for Sustainable Heritage Tourism Development: Master Plan and Implementation

    This heritage management and tourism development project at Misfat Al-‘Abriyin, a partially inhabited mountain oasis southwest of Muscat, is the first realised in Oman based on a cohesive regional strategy and settlement masterplan. In 2014 the ArCHIAM Research Centre was commissioned by Oman’s Ministry of Tourism to produce a Heritage and Tourism Development Plan for this settlement. An interdisciplinary team elaborated a detailed strategy and masterplan for the preservation and development of the oasis. Phase-1 of the masterplan implementation, funded by Bank Muscat, incorporated ideas from community workshops on the restoration, rebuilding and adaptive reuse of an information point/shop, bakery, restaurant, civic space and residents’ parking. The key questions explored, through design, how: • tourism-led heritage management of Omani mountain oases should be approached; • social history, cultural understandings and community input can inform and shape master-planning and design; • sustainable development can drive urban and architectural heritage rehabilitation; • contemporary design aspirations and use can be integrated with conservation demands. Extensive fieldwork resulted in detailed urban/architectural survey and ethnographic documentation. Ethnographic study of the ancient water infrastructure, cultural and social practices, privacy and expatriate labour occupancy, along with tribal social history and morphological studies shaped the masterplan as well as the Phase-1 components. A regional study of natural, archaeological and urban heritage sites proposed a networked strategy for tourism. Traffic volume and tourism economics analysis led to a tourist ‘gateway site’ downhill. A review of technologies for renewable energy production suggested to take Misfat entirely off-grid. The architectural designs have demonstrated how contemporary programme, material and architectonic aspirations can be brought into dialogue with the restored ‘old’. In November 2020 the project was inaugurated jointly by Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Bank Muscat. It has been globally disseminated through public lectures and talks, and widely covered by the press and social media

    A role for the ELAV RNA-binding proteins in neural stem cells : stabilization of Msi1 mRNA

    Post-transcriptional regulation exerted by neural-specific RNA-binding proteins plays a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of the nervous system. Neural ELAV proteins are key inducers of neuronal differentiation through the stabilization and/or translational enhancement of target transcripts bearing the AU-rich elements (AREs), whereas Musashi-1 maintains the stem cell proliferation state by acting as a translational repressor. Since the gene encoding Musashi-1 (Msi1) contains a conserved ARE in its 3' untranslated region, the authors focused on the possibility of a mechanistic relation between ELAV proteins and Musashi-1 in cell fate commitment. Colocalization of neural ELAV proteins with Musashi-1 clearly shows that ELAV proteins are expressed at early stages of neural commitment, whereas interaction studies demonstrate that neural ELAV proteins exert an ARE-dependent binding activity on the Msi1 mRNA. This binding activity has functional effects, since the ELAV protein family member HuD is able to stabilize the Msi1 ARE-contg. mRNA in a sequence-dependent way in a deadenylation/degrdn. assay. Furthermore activation of the neural ELAV proteins by phorbol esters in human SH-SY5Y cells is assocd. with an increase of Musashi-1 protein content in the cytoskeleton. The authors propose that ELAV RNA-binding proteins exert an important post-transcriptional control on Musashi-1 expression in the transition from proliferation to neural differentiation of stem/progenitor cells
