Search For Oxygen in Cool DQ White Dwarf Atmospheres
We report new infrared spectroscopic observations of cool DQ white dwarfs by
using Coolspec on the 2.7m Harlan-Smith Telescope. DQs have helium-rich
atmospheres with traces of molecular carbon thought to be the result of
convective dredge-up from their C/O interiors. Recent model calculations
predict that oxygen should also be present in DQ atmospheres in detectable
amounts. Our synthetic spectra calculations for He-rich white dwarfs with
traces of C and O indicate that CO should be easily detected in the cool DQ
atmospheres if present in the expected amounts. Determination of the oxygen
abundance in the atmosphere will reveal the C/O ratio at the core/envelope
boundary, constraining the important and uncertain ^{12}C(alpha,gamma)^{16}O

Elliptic Genera and 3d Gravity
We describe general constraints on the elliptic genus of a 2d supersymmetric
conformal field theory which has a gravity dual with large radius in Planck
units. We give examples of theories which do and do not satisfy the bounds we
derive, by describing the elliptic genera of symmetric product orbifolds of
, product manifolds, certain simple families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces,
and symmetric products of the "Monster CFT." We discuss the distinction between
theories with supergravity duals and those whose duals have strings at the
scale set by the AdS curvature. Under natural assumptions we attempt to
quantify the fraction of (2,2) supersymmetric conformal theories which admit a

Sonic levitation apparatus
A sonic levitation apparatus is disclosed which includes a sonic transducer which generates acoustical energy responsive to the level of an electrical amplifier. A duct communicates with an acoustical chamber to deliver an oscillatory motion of air to a plenum section which contains a collimated hole structure having a plurality of parallel orifices. The collimated hole structure converts the motion of the air to a pulsed. Unidirectional stream providing enough force to levitate a material specimen. Particular application to the production of microballoons in low gravity environment is discussed
Axon diameter measurements using diffusion MRI are infeasible
The feasibility of non-invasive axonal diameter quantification with diffusion MRI is a strongly debated topic due to the neuroscientific potential of such information and its relevance for the axonal signal transmission speed. It has been shown that under ideal conditions, the minimal diameter producing detectable signal decay is bigger than most human axons in the brain, even using the strongest currently available MRI systems. We show that resolving the simplest situations including multiple diameters is unfeasible even with diameters much bigger than the diameter limit. Additionally, the recently proposed effective diameter resulting from fitting a single value over a distribution is almost exclusively influenced by the biggest axons. We show how impractical this metric is for comparing different distributions. Overall, axon diameters currently cannot be quantified by diffusion MRI in any relevant way

Dual Fronts Propagating into an Unstable State
The interface between an unstable state and a stable state usually develops a
single confined front travelling with constant velocity into the unstable
state. Recently, the splitting of such an interface into {\em two} fronts
propagating with {\em different} velocities was observed numerically in a
magnetic system. The intermediate state is unstable and grows linearly in time.
We first establish rigorously the existence of this phenomenon, called ``dual
front,'' for a class of structurally unstable one-component models. Then we use
this insight to explain dual fronts for a generic two-component
reaction-diffusion system, and for the magnetic system.Comment: 19 pages, Postscript, A
7-Bromo-4b-methyl-7,8-dihydro-4bH-9-thia-8a-azafluorene 9,9-dioxide
The title compound, C12H12BrNO2S, was isolated after direct irradiation (hν 350 nm, hexane) of a mixture of stereoisomeric sulfonamides containing a vicinal dibromide and a conjugated diene. This product is one of a group of substrates that has contributed to our understanding of the photoreactivity patterns of non-bridged sulfonamides. The crystal structure was determined from a non-merohedrally twinned data set, where the twin law corresponded to a 180° rotation about the a* axis. The minor twin component refined to a value of 0.176 (3). The conformation of the molecule is planar at one end, as the benzene ring and the adjacent fused five-membered ring are coplanar, and U-shaped at the other end, where the five-membered ring is fused to the heterocyclic six-membered ring containing an allyl bromide group
Brief interventions to prevent sexually transmitted infections suitable for in-service use: a systematic review
Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are more common in young people and men who have sex with men (MSM) and effective in-service interventions are needed.
Methods: A systematic review of randomized control trials (RCTs) of waiting-room delivered,self-delivered and brief healthcare-provider-delivered interventions designed to
reduce STIs, increase use of home-based STI testing, or reduce STI-risk behaviour was conducted. Six databases were searched between January 2000 to October 2014.
Results: 17,916 articles were screened. 23 RCTs of interventions for young people met our inclusion criteria. Significant STI reductions were found in four RCTs of interventions using brief one-to-one counselling (2 RCTs), video (1 RCT) and a STI home-testing kit (1 RCT).
Increase in STI test uptake was found in five studies using video (1 RCT), one-to-one counselling (1 RCT), home test kit (2 RCTs) and a web-based intervention (1 RCT).
Reduction in STI-risk behaviour was found in seven RCTs of interventions using digital online (web-based) and offline (computer software) (3 RCTs), printed materials (1 RCT) and video (3 RCTs). Ten RCTs of interventions for MSM met our inclusion criteria. Three tested for STI reductions but none found significant differences between intervention and control groups. Increased STI test uptake was found in two studies using brief one-to-one counselling (1 RCT) and an online web-based intervention (1 RCT. Reduction in STI-risk behaviour was found in six studies using digital online (web-based) interventions (4 RCTs) and brief one-to one
counselling (2 RCTs.
Conclusion: A small number of interventions which could be used, or adapted for use, in sexual health clinics were found to be effective in reducing STIs among young people and in promoting self-reported STI-risk behaviour change in MSM
