Spiral Growth Manufacturing (SGM) – A Continuous Additive Manufacturing Technology for Processing Metal Powder by Selective Laser Melting
Spiral growth manufacturing is a new innovative powder based rapid manufacturing
technique. The innovation exists in the methodology in which powder layers are deposited.
Unlike other pre-placed powder systems, the deposited layers move relative to the location at
which they are processed. This is made possible by a rotating build drum into which powder is
deposited, in spiralled layers, from a stationary hopper. With this configuration powder can be
continuously deposited and levelled and simultaneously processed, eliminating delays in the
build cycle. Stainless steel and cobalt-chrome powder is selectively melted using a 100W flash
lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser. This paper reports on factors affecting build rate and on build
strategies for creating a number of axis-symmetric thin and thick walled cylinders. Experimental
results suggest that build rate for thin walled structures bonded to a substrate will ultimately be
governed by tangential movements of the powder particles when frictional forces are not
sufficient to accelerate the particles along a curved path, provided that enough laser power is
available for melting. Even melt pool balling, which is evident when melting one layer at high
speeds, diminishes in multiple layer builds due to re-melting and infilling.Mechanical Engineerin
An HST/COS legacy survey of intervening SiIII absorption in the extended gaseous halos of low-redshift galaxies
Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas
inside and outside of galaxies. It can be observed in the local Universe in
ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We
here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and
their relation to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at low redshift
(z<=0.1), based on the analysis of UV absorption spectra along 303
extragalactic lines of sight obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph
(COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Along a total redshift path of
Dz=24 we identify 69 intervening SiIII systems that all show associated
absorption from other low and high ions. We derive a bias-corrected number
density of dN/dz(SiIII)=2.5 for absorbers with column densities log
N(SiIII)>12.2. We develop a geometrical model for the absorption-cross section
of the CGM around the local galaxy population and find excellent agreement
between the model predictions and the observations. We further compare
redshifts and positions of the absorbers with that of ~64,000 galaxies using
archival galaxy-survey data. For the majority of the absorbers we identify
possible host galaxies within 300 km/s of the absorbers and derive impact
parameters rho<200 kpc, demonstrating that the spatial distributions of SiIII
absorbers and galaxies are highly correlated. Our study indicates that the
majority of SiIII-selected absorbers in our sample trace the CGM of nearby
galaxies within their virial radii at a typical covering fraction of ~70 per
cent. From a detailed ionization model we estimate that diffuse gas in the CGM
around galaxies, as traced by SiIII, contains substantially more baryonic mass

Subsonic longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics and engine pressure distributions for an aircraft with an integrated scramjet designed for Mach 6 cruise
A 1/10-scale model of a proposed hypersonic aircraft with an integrated scramjet was tested. The investigation took place over a Mach number range from 0.2 to 0.7 and an angle of attack range from 2 deg to approximately 17 deg at a sideslip angle of 0 deg. The primary configuration variables studied were engine location, internal engine geometry, and external engine geometry. The results are presented without analysis
On a problem of Erd\H{o}s and Rothschild on edges in triangles
Erd\H{o}s and Rothschild asked to estimate the maximum number, denoted by
H(N,C), such that every N-vertex graph with at least CN^2 edges, each of which
is contained in at least one triangle, must contain an edge that is in at least
H(N,C) triangles. In particular, Erd\H{o}s asked in 1987 to determine whether
for every C>0 there is \epsilon >0 such that H(N,C) > N^\epsilon, for all
sufficiently large N. We prove that H(N,C) = N^{O(1/log log N)} for every fixed
C < 1/4. This gives a negative answer to the question of Erd\H{o}s, and is best
possible in terms of the range for C, as it is known that every N-vertex graph
with more than (N^2)/4 edges contains an edge that is in at least N/6

Contamination in complex healthcare trials:the falls in care homes (FinCH) study experience
BACKGROUND: Trials are at risk of contamination bias which can occur when participants in the control group are inadvertently exposed to the intervention. This is a particular risk in rehabilitation studies where it is easy for trial interventions to be either intentionally or inadvertently adopted in control settings. The Falls in Care Homes (FinCH) trial is used in this paper as an example of a large randomised controlled trial of a complex intervention to explore the potential risks of contamination bias. We outline the FinCH trial design, present the potential risks from contamination bias, and the strategies used in the design of the trial to minimise or mitigate against this. The FinCH trial was a multi-centre randomised controlled trial, with embedded process evaluation, which evaluated whether systematic training in the use of the Guide to Action Tool for Care Homes reduced falls in care home residents. Data were collected from a number of sources to explore contamination in the FinCH trial. Where specific procedures were adopted to reduce risk of, or mitigate against, contamination, this was recorded. Data were collected from study e-mails, meetings with clinicians, research assistant and clinician network communications, and an embedded process evaluation in six intervention care homes. During the FinCH trial, there were six new falls prevention initiatives implemented outside the study which could have contaminated our intervention and findings. Methods used to minimise contamination were: cluster randomisation at the level of care home; engagement with the clinical community to highlight the risks of early adoption; establishing local collaborators in each site familiar with the local context; signing agreements with NHS falls specialists that they would maintain confidentiality regarding details of the intervention; opening additional research sites; and by raising awareness about the importance of contamination in research among participants. CONCLUSION: Complex rehabilitation trials are at risk of contamination bias. The potential for contamination bias in studies can be minimized by strengthening collaboration and dialogue with the clinical community. Researchers should recognise that clinicians may contaminate a study through lack of research expertise
Multiphase Plasma in Sub-Damped Lyman Alpha Systems: A Hidden Metal Reservoir
We present a VLT/UVES spectrum of a proximate sub-damped Lyman-alpha
(sub-DLA) system at z=2.65618 toward the quasar Q0331-4505
(z_qso=2.6785+/-0.0030). Absorption lines of O I, Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, C
III, C IV, Fe II, Al II, and O VI are seen in the sub-DLA, which has a neutral
hydrogen column density log N(H I)=19.82+/-0.05. The absorber is at a velocity
of 1820+/-250 km/s from the quasar; however, its low metallicity
[O/H]=-1.64+/-0.07, lack of partial coverage, lack of temporal variations
between observations taken in 2003 and 2006, and non-detection of N V imply the
absorber is not a genuine intrinsic system. By measuring the O VI column
density and assuming equal metallicities in the neutral and ionized gas, we
determine the column density of hot ionized hydrogen in this sub-DLA, and in
two other sub-DLAs with O VI drawn from the literature. Coupling this with
determinations of the typical amount of warm ionized hydrogen in sub-DLAs, we
confirm that sub-DLAs are a more important metal reservoir than DLAs, in total
comprising at least 6-22% of the metal budget at z~2.5.Comment: 5 pages, 3 color figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Role playing African development : an international comparison
The African Development Game is a role playing simulation developed to demonstrate the difficulties six African countries face in reaching the Millennium Development Goals. The game has been played in three different countries, South Africa, Sweden and Finland, to examine its utility as a learning tool for students who are unfamiliar both with the Millennium Development Goals and the problems of African development. Analysis of the games played in South Africa and Sweden. is based on a comparison of student reflections supplemented by participant observation and spreadsheet information of economic performances. Marked differences in the types of learning and success in repaying debt were observed between the two groups of students. They all commented, however, on the effectiveness of the role play as a learning tool
Staying in place during times of change in Arctic Alaska: The implications of attachment,alternatives, and buffering
The relationship between stability and change in social-ecological systems has received considerable attention in recent years, including the expectation that significant environmental changes will drive observable consequences for individuals, communities, and populations. Migration, as one example of response to adverse economic or environmental changes, has been observed in many places, including parts of the Far North. In Arctic Alaska, a relative lack of demographic or migratory response to rapid environmental and other changes has been observed. To understand why Arctic Alaska appears different, we draw on the literature on environmentally driven migration, focusing on three mechanisms that could account for the lack of response: attachment, the desire to remain in place, or the inability to relocate successfully; alternatives, ways to achieve similar outcomes through different means; and buffering, the reliance on subsidies or use of reserves to delay impacts. Each explanation has different implications for research and policy, indicating a need to further explore the relative contribution that each makes to a given situation in order to develop more effective responses locally and regionally. Given that the Arctic is on the front lines of climate change, these explanations are likely relevant to the ways changes play out in other parts of the world. Our review also underscores the importance of further attention to the details of social dynamics in climate change impacts and responses
