    Competition between demand-side intermediaries in ad exchanges

    Online advertising constitutes one of the main sources of revenue for the majority of businesses on the web. Online advertising inventory was traditionally traded via bilateral contracts between publishers and advertisers, vastly through a number of intermediaries. However, what caused an explosion in the volume and, consequently, the revenue of online ads was the incorporation of auctions as the major mechanism for trading sponsored search ads in all major search engines. This reduced transaction costs and allowed for the advertisement of small websites which constitute the majority of Internet traffic. Auction-based markets were harder to establish in the display advertising industry due to the higher volume of inventory and the pre-existence of traditional intermediaries, often leading to inefficiencies and lack of transparency. Nevertheless, this has recently changed with the introduction of the ad exchanges, centralized marketplaces for the allocation of display advertising inventory that support auctions and real-time bidding. The appearance of ad exchanges has also altered the market structure of both demand-side and supply side intermediaries which increasingly adopt auctions to perform their business operations. Hence, each time a user enters a publisher's website, the contracted ad exchange runs an auction among a number of demand-side intermediaries, each of which represents their interested advertisers and typically submits a bid by running a local auction among these advertisers.Against this background, within this thesis, we look both at the auction design problem of the ad exchange and the demand-side intermediaries as well as at the strategies to be adopted by advertisers. Specifically, we study the revenue and efficiency effects of the introduction and competition of the demand-side intermediaries in a single-item auction setting with independent private valuations. The introduction of these intermediaries constitutes a major issue for ad exchanges since they hide some of the demand from the ad exchange and hence can make a profit by pocketing the difference between what they receive from their advertisers and what they pay at the exchange. Ad exchanges were created to offer transparency to both sides of the market, so it is important to study the share of the revenue that intermediaries receive to justify their services offered given the competition they face by other such intermediaries. The existence of mediators is a well-known problem in other settings. For this reason, our formulation is general enough to encompass other areas where two levels of auctions arise, such as procurement auctions with subcontracting and auctions with colluding bidders.In more detail, we study the effects of the demand-side intermediaries' choice of auction for three widely used mechanisms, two variations of the second-price sealed-bid (known as Vickrey) auction, termed PRE and POST, and first-price sealed-bid (FPSB) auctions. We first look at a scenario with a finite number of intermediaries, each implementing the same mechanism, where we compare the profits attained for all stakeholders. We find that there cannot be a complete profit ranking of the three auctions: FPSB auctions yield higher expected profit for a small number of competing intermediaries, otherwise PRE auctions are better for the intermediaries. We also find that the ad exchange benefits from intermediaries implementing POST auctions. We then let demand-side intermediaries set reserve (or floor) prices, that are known to increase an auctioneer's expected revenue. For issues of analytical tractability, we only consider scenarios with two intermediaries but we also compare the two Vickrey variations in heterogeneous settings where one intermediary implements the first whereas the other implements the second variation. We find that intermediaries, in general, follow mixed reserve-price-setting strategies whose distributions are difficult to derive analytically. For this reason, we use the fictitious play algorithm to calculate approximate equilibria and numerically compare the revenue and efficiency of the three mechanisms for specific instances. We find that PRE seems to perform best in terms of attained profit but is less efficient than POST. Hence, the latter might be a better option for intermediaries in the long term.Finally, we extend the previous setting by letting advertisers strategically select one of the two intermediaries when the latter implement each of the two Vickrey variations. We analytically derive the advertisers' intermediary selection strategies in equilibrium. Given that, in some cases, these strategies are rather complex, we use again the fictitious play algorithm to numerically calculate the intermediaries' and the ad exchange's best responses for the same instances as before. We find that, when both intermediaries implement POST auctions, advertisers always select the low-reserve intermediary, otherwise they generally follow randomized strategies. Last, we find that the ad exchange benefits from intermediaries implementing the pre-award Vickrey variation compared to a setting with two heterogeneous Vickrey intermediary auctioneers, whereas the opposite is true for the intermediaries.<br/

    The objective of this thesis is the development of an autonomous Double Auction (DA) market capable of operating efficiently in an isolated as well as in competitive environments. A well known example of such an institution is the stock market. Besides their multi-annual study and operation, DAs continue constituting a theoretical paradox. They succeed to exhibit an increased efficiency with the implementation of very simple rules, even if there still has not been achieved a satisfactory theoretical model from the field of Mechanism Design. In order to overcome this shortcoming, researchers have turned their attention to experimental techniques for the study and implementation of new, innovative rules, a field known as Automated Mechanism Design. However, all studies up to now deal with markets that operate free of charge in an isolated environment, something which does not correspond well in today’s global economy, where each country’s stock markets compete with each other as well as with the remainder stock exchanges worldwide in order to achieve high profits and market-share. TAC Market Design (or CAT) is an attempt to study this kind of institutions and made its appearance in 2007. In CAT, entrants represent stock markets that compete with each other while being evaluated in a number of realistic criteria. This thesis presents the game of CAT and all the strategies that were implemented by our agent, Mertacor, with which we participated these two years that the competition is being conducted and which was placed 8th and 5th respectively

    Flexural Strengthening of Two-Way RC Slabs with Textile-Reinforced Mortar: Experimental Investigation and Design Equations

    The application of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) as a means of increasing the flexural capacity of two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs is experimentally investigated in this study. The parameters examined include the number of TRM layers, the strengthening configuration, the textile fibers material (carbon versus glass), and the role of initial cracking in the slab. For this purpose six largescale RC slabs were built and tested to failure under monotonic loading distributed at four points. It is concluded that TRM increases substantially the precracking stiffness, the cracking load, the postcracking stiffness, and eventually the flexural capacity of two-way RC slabs, whereas the strengthening configuration plays an important role in the effectiveness of the technique. Simple design equations that provide good estimation of the experimental flexural moment of resistance are proposed

Current evidence emphasises the unfavourable outcomes of HF even in early stages or in patients who achieve reverse remodeling and remission or recovery under optimised treatment. This should stimulate efforts towards a more objective, rigorous management, covering the entire spectrum of mild, moderate and severe HF

    Standard systemic therapy of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) involves targeting angiogenesis, mainly through tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) against the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) pathway and targeting the immune checkpoints, namely, programmed death-1 (PD-1) or its ligand (PD-L1), and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA4). With current strategies of combining these two approaches in the front-line setting, less is known about optimal selection of therapy upon development of resistance in the second and later lines of treatment for progressive disease. This review discusses currently available therapeutic options in patients who have progressive RCC after prior treatment with double immune check-point inhibitors (ICIs) or ICI-TKI combinations

    Shear strengthening of full-scale RC T-beams using textile-reinforced mortar and textile-based anchors

    This paper presents a study on the effectiveness of TRM jacketing in shear strengthening of full-scale reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams focussing on the behaviour of a novel end-anchorage system comprising textile-based anchors. The parameters examined in this study include: (a) the use of textile-based anchors as end-anchorage system of TRM U-jackets; (b) the number of TRM layers; (c) the textile properties (material, geometry); and (d) the strengthening system, namely textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) jacketing and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing for the case without anchors. In total, 11 full-scale RC T-beams were constructed and tested as simply supported in three-point bending. The results showed that: (a) The use of textile-based anchors increases dramatically the effectiveness of TRM U-jackets; (b) increasing the number of layers in non-anchored jackets results in an almost proportional increase of the shear capacity, whereas the failure mode is altered; (c) the use of different textile geometries with the same reinforcement ratio in non-anchored jackets result in practically equal capacity increase; (d) TRM jackets can be as effective as FRP jackets in increasing the shear capacity of full-scale RC T-beams. Finally, a simple design model is proposed to calculate the contribution of anchored TRM jackets to the shear capacity of RC T-beams

    Shear strengthening of concrete members with TRM jackets: Effect of shear span-to-depth ratio, material and amount of external reinforcement

    An experimental work on reinforced concrete (RC) rectangular beams strengthened in shear with textile reinforced mortar (TRM) jackets is presented in this paper, with focus on the following investigated parameters: (a) the amount of external TRM reinforcement ratio, ρf, by means of using different number of textile layers and different types of textile fibre materials (carbon, glass, basalt); (b) the textile geometry, and (c) the shear span-to-depth ratio, a/d. In total, 22 tests were conducted on simply supported rectangular RC beams under (three-point bending) monotonic loading. The experimental results revealed that: (1) TRM is very effective when the failure is attributed to debonding of the TRM jacket from the concrete substrate; (2) the trend of effective strains for carbon, glass and basalt TRM jackets is descending for increasing values of the TRM reinforcement ratio, ρf, when failure is associated to debonding of the jacket; (3) the effect of textile geometry is significant only for low values of ρf, resulting in variances in the capacity enhancement and the failure modes, and (4) the shear span-to-depth ratio has practically no effect to the failure mode nor to the TRM jacket contribution to the total shear resistance of the RC beams

    The neural correlates of dreaming.

    Consciousness never fades during waking. However, when awakened from sleep, we sometimes recall dreams and sometimes recall no experiences. Traditionally, dreaming has been identified with rapid eye-movement (REM) sleep, characterized by wake-like, globally 'activated', high-frequency electroencephalographic activity. However, dreaming also occurs in non-REM (NREM) sleep, characterized by prominent low-frequency activity. This challenges our understanding of the neural correlates of conscious experiences in sleep. Using high-density electroencephalography, we contrasted the presence and absence of dreaming in NREM and REM sleep. In both NREM and REM sleep, reports of dream experience were associated with local decreases in low-frequency activity in posterior cortical regions. High-frequency activity in these regions correlated with specific dream contents. Monitoring this posterior 'hot zone' in real time predicted whether an individual reported dreaming or the absence of dream experiences during NREM sleep, suggesting that it may constitute a core correlate of conscious experiences in sleep

    Textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) versus fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in shear strengthening of concrete beams

    This paper presents an experimental study on shear strengthening of rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) beams with advanced composite materials. Key parameters of this study include: (a) the strengthening system, namely textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) jacketing and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing, (b) the strengthening configuration, namely side-bonding, U-wrapping and full-wrapping, and (c) the number of the strengthening layers. In total, 14 RC beams were constructed and tested under bending loading. One of the beams did not receive any strengthening and served as control beam, eight received TRM jacketing, whereas the rest five received FRP jacketing. It is concluded that the TRM is generally less effective than FRP in increasing the shear capacity of concrete, however the effectiveness depends on both the strengthening configuration and the number of layers. U-wrapping strengthening configuration is much more effective than side-bonding in case of TRM jackets and the effectiveness of TRM jackets increases considerably with increasing the number of layers
