DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, TX, USA, and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA, and VA South Central Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center, Houston, TX, USA.Background: Previous research found a high prevalence of depression, along with chronic illnesses and disabilities, among older ED patients. This study examined the relationship between depressive symptom severity and the number of ED visits among low-income homebound older adults who participated in a randomized controlled trial of telehealth problem-solving therapy (PST).
Methods: The number of and reasons for ED visits were collected from the study participants (n=121 at baseline) at all assessment points—baseline and 12- and 24-week follow-ups. Depressive symptoms were measured with the 24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD). All multivariable analyses examining the relationships between ED visits and depressive symptoms were conducted using zero-inflated Poisson regression models.
Results: Of the participants, 67.7% used the ED at least once and 61% of the visitors made at least one return visit during the approximately 12-month period. Body pain (not from fall injury and not including chest pain) was the most common reason. The ED visit frequency at baseline and at follow-up was significantly positively associated with the HAMD scores at the assessment points. The ED visit frequency at follow-up, controlling for the ED visits at baseline, was also significantly associated with the HAMD score change since baseline.
Conclusions: The ED visit rate was much higher than those reported in other studies. Better education on self-management of chronic conditions, depression screening by primary care physicians and ED, and depression treatment that includes symptom management and problem-solving skills may be important to reduce ED visits among medically ill, low-income homebound adults.

Statistical kinetic treatment of relativistic binary collisions
In particle-based algorithms, the effect of binary collisions is commonly
described in a statistical way, using Monte Carlo techniques. It is shown that,
in the relativistic regime, stringent constraints should be considered on the
sampling of particle pairs for collision, which are critical to ensure
physically meaningful results, and that nonrelativistic sampling criteria
(e.g., uniform random pairing) yield qualitatively wrong results, including
equilibrium distributions that differ from the theoretical J"uttner
distribution. A general procedure for relativistically consistent algorithms is
provided, and verified with three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations, thus
opening the way to the numerical exploration of the statistical properties of
collisional relativistic systems.Comment: Accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Phys. Rev.
Selective Area Grown Semiconductor-Superconductor Hybrids: A Basis for Topological Networks
We introduce selective area grown hybrid InAs/Al nanowires based on molecular
beam epitaxy, allowing arbitrary semiconductor-superconductor networks
containing loops and branches. Transport reveals a hard induced gap and
unpoisoned 2e-periodic Coulomb blockade, with temperature dependent 1e features
in agreement with theory. Coulomb peak spacing in parallel magnetic field
displays overshoot, indicating an oscillating discrete near-zero subgap state
consistent with device length. Finally, we investigate a loop network, finding
strong spin-orbit coupling and a coherence length of several microns. These
results demonstrate the potential of this platform for scalable topological
networks among other applications.Comment: NBI QDEV 201
Cooking quality, digestibility, and sensory properties of proso millet pasta as impacted by amylose content and prolamin profile
As part of ongoing efforts to promote millet as a double crop for the American Midwest, four Minnesota-grownproso millet varieties were selected for fresh gluten-free pasta production and compared to commerciallyavailable fresh gluten-free and wheat pasta. Raw and cooked pasta were analyzed for starch and protein content, color, and carotenoids. Cooked pasta was assessed for cooking quality, in-vitro starch and protein digestibility, and sensory quality. Millet pasta contained less rapidly digestible starch than commercial gluten-free pasta;however, millet and commercial gluten-free pasta had lower protein digestibility than wheat pasta. Sensorypanelists detected more graininess and starchiness in millet samples than in commercial pasta. Millet varietiesdiffered in amylose content and prolamin profile, and both factors influenced pasta properties. Pasta with moreamylose and high-molecular weight prolamins had lower cooking loss and lower stickiness scores. Higheramylose contents also corresponded to higher firmness and chewiness among millet pasta samples. The milletsample with the lowest amylose and prolamin content yielded pasta of the lowest quality. Results indicated thatselect proso millet varieties may be suitable for fresh pasta, yet quality improvement is warranted by recipe orprocessing optimizations
Evolutions of Magnetized and Rotating Neutron Stars
We study the evolution of magnetized and rigidly rotating neutron stars
within a fully general relativistic implementation of ideal
magnetohydrodynamics with no assumed symmetries in three spatial dimensions.
The stars are modeled as rotating, magnetized polytropic stars and we examine
diverse scenarios to study their dynamics and stability properties. In
particular we concentrate on the stability of the stars and possible critical
behavior. In addition to their intrinsic physical significance, we use these
evolutions as further tests of our implementation which incorporates new
developments to handle magnetized systems.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
