The purpose of this paper is to determine the Recreational Carrying Capacity of three estuarine beaches (Colares, Marudá and Murubira) on the Amazon coast of Brazil, based on the combined assessment of natural conditions and visitor facilities. In the final analysis, the carrying capacity of Colares beach was estimated to be 1089 visitors per day, and that of Murubira beach, 238 visitors per day. At Marudá beach, however, the inadequate quality of the water resulted in an RCC of zero, indicating that the beach should not be visited for recreational use. The results of this study may provide a valuable diagnostic tool for the development of future state and municipal coastal management programs. We believe that the procedures adopted in this study are applicable to other estuarine beaches on the Amazon coast, as well as in other estuarine beaches elsewhere with similar natural characteristics.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Acute Systemic Response Of BDNF, Lactate and Cortisol to Strenuous Exercise Modalities in Healthy Untrained Women

Acute bouts of intense exercise increase lactate concentration, which in turn stimulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) production. Cortisol released during intense exercise might inhibit BDNF synthesis. This study examined the acute effects of 2 protocols of strenuous exercise on serum BDNF. Seventeen physically-active healthy females (Age = 20.0 ± 0.9 yr., BMI = 23.0 ± 2.6 kg/m2) performed a strenuous cycle-ergometer graded exercise test (GXT) and a high-intensity interval training session (HIIT). Serum BDNF, serum cortisol, cortisol: BDNF ratio and blood lactate (BLa) were recorded at baseline and immediately following exercise. Although non-statistically significant, the HIIT session elicited a higher magnitude of change from baseline for BDNF (d = 0.17) and cortisol (d = 1.18) than after the GXT (d = -0.26, and d = 0.82, respectively). An interaction was found between GXT and HIIT trials and measurements on BLa levels, with higher post-exertion values after HIIT than after GXT (p < 0.0001, η2 = 0.650, 95%CI = 2.2, 5.2). The higher BLa levels did not raise circulating BDNF. The elevated cortisol levels may have overcome the effects of lactate on BDNF. However, the higher BLa induced by HIIT suggest that interval exercise modality on the long-term could be a feasible intervention to increase circulating peripheral BDNF, at least in untrained healthy women

The impact of the Web Summit on Hotel Performance, the case of Lisbon

This study aims to examine the impact of a mega business event—the Web Summit—on local hotels’ key performance indicators. The Web Summit is an annual technology event held in November. Lisbon has been the chosen city for the past 3 years, 2019 making it the fourth. To understand this, daily data collected from STR allowed for a comparative study between hotel performance before and after the Web Summit. We compare the 3 years prior to the event and the last 3 years of the event taking place in Lisbon. The sample size is 63 hospitality companies that range from Economy to Luxury Class and ADR, RevPAR, and Occupancy data. Results show that on the first dates of the event ADR and RevPAR increase up to 115% and occupancy 21% when compared to the previous year. However, on the third year of the event, 2018, these numbers do not see the same increase and remain somewhat similar to the previous year, 2017. This shows that there is major impact on hotel performance justifying the interest governments and other tourism agencies have in attracting these types of events, although after the first impact prices tend to stabilize. The focus on one event only and not compared to other events and other type of event. This study will help Revenue Managers and other decision makers examine the real impact on hotel revenue of such events. They will also be able to preview growth associated to the implementation and support of mega events. This study shows that there are clear benefits in holding big business events, but hoteliers should make better forecasts to yield better results specially when concerning revenues. The before and after daily analysis of key performance indicators is of great value to help hoteliers and practitioners about revenue management pricing strategies regarding this type of events and their long-term impact

Fundamental-mode eigenfrequencies of neutral and charged twin neutron stars

We investigate the effects of rapid and slow conversions on the fundamental-mode eigenfrequencies of hybrid neutron stars having highly discontinuous transitions between hadronic and quark matter, the so-called twin stars. We analyze some characteristic cases in the available parameter space of the equations of state for the hadronic and quark phases. Furthermore, we also consider the possibility that these stellar configurations are electrically charged. Our results indicate that for neutral configurations under rapid conversions the stability window coincides with the usual stability criterion, i.e. M/pc>0\partial M/\partial p_c > 0 and that the two branches are disconnected. This discontinuity remains when electric charge is considered, but the usual criterion is not sufficient to determine the star's stability. On the other hand, slow conversions connect initially disconnected branches and increase the stability window of the hybrid configurations. For both conversion speeds, the presence of electric charge diminishes the magnitude of the eigenfrequencies and its stability window.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Version published in EPJ

Valorization of Tomato Processing by-Products: Fatty Acid Extraction and Production of Bio-Based Materials

    Get PDF
A method consisting of the alkaline hydrolysis of tomato pomace by-products has been optimized to obtain a mixture of unsaturated and polyhydroxylated fatty acids as well as a non-hydrolysable secondary residue. Reaction rates and the activation energy of the hydrolysis were calculated to reduce costs associated with chemicals and energy consumption. Lipid and non-hydrolysable fractions were chemically (infrared (IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS)) and thermally (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)) characterized. In addition, the fatty acid mixture was used to produce cutin-based polyesters. Freestanding films were prepared by non-catalyzed melt-polycondensation and characterized by Attenuated Total Reflected-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), DSC, TGA, Water Contact Angles (WCA), and tensile tests. These bio-based polymers were hydrophobic, insoluble, infusible, and thermally stable, their physical properties being tunable by controlling the presence of unsaturated fatty acids and oxygen in the reaction. The participation of an oxidative crosslinking side reaction is proposed to be responsible for such modifications.Andalusian Regional Government P11-TEP-7418Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad AGL2015-65246-R and AGL2017-83036-RFondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) AGL2015-65246-R and AGL2017-83036-

The thermal stability and the quantification of the different transformation processes involved in the overall crystallization of the Fe50Cr15Mo14C15B6 amorphous alloy were investigated by several characterization techniques. Formation of various metastable and stable phases during the devitrification process in the sequence a-Fe, ¿-Cr6Fe18Mo5, M23(C,B)6, M7C3, ¿-Fe3Mo3C and FeMo2B2 (with M = Fe, Cr, Mo), was observed by in-situ synchrotron high energy X-ray diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy. By combining these techniques with differential scanning calorimetry data, the crystallization states and their temperature range of stability under continuous heating were related with the evolution of the crystallized fraction and the phase sequence as a function of temperature, revealing structural and chemical details of the different transformation mechanisms.Postprint (published version
