A Method for Establishing Outdoor Recreation Project Priorities in Alaska

in this research project.The objectives of this study are to define outdoor recreation benefits to
the public and to develop a priority ranking method for proposed outdoor
recreation projects. A careful analysis of the benefits which people derive
from outdoor recreation provides a frame of reference for evaluating a
recreational facility. A project should supply those benefits which are most
highly demanded by the public. Fifteen benefits of recreation are defined
and discussed. They are divided into two major categories; those which
accrue to recreational participants and those which accrue to

High resolution CO observations of S88-B
CO J = 2-1 and 13CO J = 2-1 and 1-0 observations have been made of the H II region S88-B, using the 15-m James Clerk Maxwell telescope in Hawaii and the 20-m telescope at Onsala. The core of the cloud is resolved into a horseshoelike structure which surrounds a diffuse reflection nebula. The central core has a mass of ≥ 1000 M⊙, with 400 M⊙ in the horseshoe structure. The gas in the horse in the horseshoe appears highly fragmented, and has a kinetic temperature of ≈ 60 K, suggesting it is closely coupled to the dust temperature. A recently formed high mass star appears to be in the process of evacuating a cavity, possibly through a large molecular outflow that is found to show an accelerated component in its blue-shifted lobe. A velocity gradient across the horseshoe structure suggest ordered motion, and could represent rotation in the parental cloud

High signal/noise <sup>13</sup>CO observations of the bipolar outflow in L1551
New high-signal/noise 13CO observations of the bipolar outflow in the molecular cloud L1551 are reported. Contrary to earlier observations of CO J = 1-0 and 2-1, no strong spatial dependence is found for the velocity profile of these spectra. The implications of these observations are such that the model of an empty shell for this source is less likely, and a model consisting of a shell which contains significant amounts of outflowing molecular gas inside the swept-up cavity walls is suggested
Dilution jet mixing program, phase 3
The objectives of the program were: (1) to extend the data base on mixing of a single-sided row of jets with a confined crossflow, (2) to collect a data base on mixing of multiple rows of jets with confined crossflow, (3) to develop empirical jet mixing correlations, and (4) to perform limited three-dimensional calculations for some of these test configurations. The tests were performed with uniform mainstream conditions for several orifice plate configurations. Schematics of the test section and the orifice configurations are given. Temperature and pressure measurements were made in the test section at 4 axial and 11 transverse stations, using a 60-element rake probe. The measured temperature distributions for these tests are reported
Linear Optical CNOT Gate in the Coincidence Basis
We describe the operation and tolerances of a non-deterministic, coincidence
basis, quantum CNOT gate for photonic qubits. It is constructed solely from
linear optical elements and requires only a two-photon source for its

Target enrichment of ultraconserved elements from arthropods provides a genomic perspective on relationships among Hymenoptera
Gaining a genomic perspective on phylogeny requires the collection of data
from many putatively independent loci collected across the genome. Among
insects, an increasingly common approach to collecting this class of data
involves transcriptome sequencing, because few insects have high-quality genome
sequences available; assembling new genomes remains a limiting factor; the
transcribed portion of the genome is a reasonable, reduced subset of the genome
to target; and the data collected from transcribed portions of the genome are
similar in composition to the types of data with which biologists have
traditionally worked (e.g., exons). However, molecular techniques requiring RNA
as a template are limited to using very high quality source materials, which
are often unavailable from a large proportion of biologically important insect
samples. Recent research suggests that DNA-based target enrichment of conserved
genomic elements offers another path to collecting phylogenomic data across
insect taxa, provided that conserved elements are present in and can be
collected from insect genomes. Here, we identify a large set (n1510) of
ultraconserved elements (UCE) shared among the insect order Hymenoptera. We use
in silico analyses to show that these loci accurately reconstruct relationships
among genome-enabled Hymenoptera, and we design a set of baits for enriching
these loci that researchers can use with DNA templates extracted from a variety
of sources. We use our UCE bait set to enrich an average of 721 UCE loci from
30 hymenopteran taxa, and we use these UCE loci to reconstruct phylogenetic
relationships spanning very old (220 MYA) to very young (1 MYA)
divergences among hymenopteran lineages. In contrast to a recent study
addressing hymenopteran phylogeny using transcriptome data, we found ants to be
sister to all remaining aculeate lineages with complete support

Dilution jet mixing program, phase 3
The main objectives for the NASA Jet Mixing Phase 3 program were: extension of the data base on the mixing of single sided rows of jets in a confined cross flow to discrete slots, including streamlined, bluff, and angled injections; quantification of the effects of geometrical and flow parameters on penetration and mixing of multiple rows of jets into a confined flow; investigation of in-line, staggered, and dissimilar hole configurations; and development of empirical correlations for predicting temperature distributions for discrete slots and multiple rows of dilution holes
