Brayton heat exchanger unit development program (alternate design)
A Brayton Heat Exchanger Unit Alternate Design (BHXU-Alternate) consisting of a recuperator, a heat sink heat exchanger, and a gas ducting system, was designed and fabricated. The design was formulated to provide a high performance unit suitable for use in a long-life Brayton-cycle powerplant. Emphasis was on double containment against external leakage and leakage of the organic coolant into the gas stream. A parametric analysis and design study was performed to establish the optimum component configurations to achieve low weight and size and high reliability, while meeting the requirements of high effectiveness and low pressure drop. Layout studies and detailed mechanical and structural design were performed to obtain a flight-type packaging arrangement, including the close-coupled integration of the BHXU-Alternate with the Brayton Rotating Unit (BRU)

Gravitational hydrodynamics of large scale structure formation
The gravitational hydrodynamics of the primordial plasma with neutrino hot
dark matter is considered as a challenge to the bottom-up cold dark matter
paradigm. Viscosity and turbulence induce a top-down fragmentation scenario
before and at decoupling. The first step is the creation of voids in the
plasma, which expand to 37 Mpc on the average now. The remaining matter clumps
turn into galaxy clusters. Turbulence produced at expanding void boundaries
causes a linear morphology of 3 kpc fragmenting protogalaxies along vortex
lines. At decoupling galaxies and proto-globular star clusters arise; the
latter constitute the galactic dark matter halos and consist themselves of
earth-mass H-He planets. Frozen planets are observed in microlensing and
white-dwarf-heated ones in planetary nebulae. The approach also explains the
Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, and cosmic microwave temperature
fluctuations of micro-Kelvins.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
On Dwarf Galaxies as the Source of Intracluster Gas
Recent observational evidence for steep dwarf galaxy luminosity functions in
several rich clusters has led to speculation that their precursors may be the
source of the majority of gas and metals inferred from intracluster medium
(ICM) x-ray observations. Their deposition into the ICM is presumed to occur
through early supernovae-driven winds, the resultant systems reflecting the
photometric and chemical properties of the low luminosity dwarf spheroidals and
ellipticals we observe locally. We consider this scenario, utilising a
self-consistent model for spheroidal photo-chemical evolution and gas ejection
via galactic superwinds. Insisting that post-wind dwarfs obey the observed
colour-luminosity-metallicity relations, we conclude that the bulk of the ICM

Carbon-rich presolar grains from massive stars : subsolar ¹²C/¹³C and ¹⁴N/¹⁵N ratios and the mystery of ¹⁵N
Carbon-rich grains with isotopic anomalies compared to the Sun are found in primitive meteorites. They were made by stars, and carry the original stellar nucleosynthesis signature. Silicon carbide grains of Type X and C and low-density (LD) graphites condensed in the ejecta of core-collapse supernovae. We present a new set of models for the explosive He shell and compare them with the grains showing ¹²C/¹³C and ¹⁴N/¹⁵N ratios lower than solar. In the stellar progenitor H was ingested into the He shell and not fully destroyed before the explosion. Different explosion energies and H concentrations are considered. If the supernova shock hits the He-shell region with some H still present, the models can reproduce the C and N isotopic signatures in C-rich grains. Hot-CNO cycle isotopic signatures are obtained, including a large production of ¹³C and ¹⁵N. The short-lived radionuclides ²²Na and ²⁶Al are increased by orders of magnitude. The production of radiogenic ²²Ne from the decay of ²²Na in the He shell might solve the puzzle of the Ne-E(L) component in LD graphite grains. This scenario is attractive for the SiC grains of type AB with ¹⁴N/¹⁵N ratios lower than solar, and provides an alternative solution for SiC grains originally classified as nova grains. Finally, this process may contribute to the production of ¹⁴N and ¹⁵N in the Galaxy, helping to produce the ¹⁴N/¹⁵N ratio in the solar system
Are Red Tidal Features Unequivocal Signatures of Major Dry Mergers?
We use a cosmological numerical simulation to study the tidal features
produced by a minor merger with an elliptical galaxy. We find that the
simulated tidal features are quantitatively similar to the red tidal features,
i.e., dry tidal features, recently found in deep images of elliptical galaxies
at intermediate redshifts. The minor merger in our simulation does not trigger
star formation due to active galactic nuclei heating. Therefore, both the tidal
features and the host galaxy are red, i.e. a dry minor merger. The stellar mass
of the infalling satellite galaxy is about 10^10 Msun, and the tidal debris
reach the surface brightness of mu_R~27 mag arcsec^-2. Thus, we conclude that
tidal debris from minor mergers can explain the observed dry tidal features in
ellipticals at intermediate redshifts, although other mechanisms (such as major

RISE: a fast-readout imager for exoplanet transit timing
By the precise timing of the low amplitude (0.005 - 0.02 magnitude) transits
of exoplanets around their parent star it should be possible to infer the
presence of other planetary bodies in the system down to Earth-like masses. We
describe the design and construction of RISE, a fast-readout frame transfer
camera for the Liverpool Telescope designed to carry out this experiment. The
results of our commissioning tests are described as well as the data reduction
procedure necessary. We present light curves of two objects, showing that the
desired timing and photometric accuracy can be obtained providing that
autoguiding is used to keep the target on the same detector pixel for the

Environments for sonic ecologies
This paper outlines a current lack of consideration for the environmental context of Evolutionary Algorithms used for the generation of music. We attempt to readdress this balance by outlining the benefits of developing strong coupling strategies between agent and en- vironment. It goes on to discuss the relationship between artistic process and the viewer and suggests a placement of the viewer and agent in a shared environmental context to facilitate understanding of the artistic process and a feeling of participation in the work. The paper then goes on to outline the installation ‘Excuse Me and how it attempts to achieve a level of Sonic Ecology through the use of a shared environmental context
