Psy-expertise, therapeutic culture and the politics of the personal in development
Expertise stemming from the psy disciplines is increasingly and explicitly shaping international development policy and practice. Whilst some policy makers see the use of psy expertise as a new way to reduce poverty, increase economic efficiency, and promote wellbeing, others raise concerns that psychocentric development promotes individual over structural change, pathologises poverty, and depoliticises development. This paper specifically analyses four aspects of psy knowledge used in contemporary development policy: child development/developmental psychology, behavioural economics, positive psychology, and global mental health. This analysis illuminates the co-constitutive intellectual and colonial histories of development and psy-expertise: a connection that complicates claims that development has been psychologized; the uses and coloniality of both within a neoliberal project; and the potential for psychopolitics to inform development

Age-dependent female responses to a male ejaculate signal alter demographic opportunities for selection
A central tenet of evolutionary explanations for ageing is that the strength of selection wanes with age. However, data on age-specific expression and benefits of sexually selected traits are lacking—particularly for traits subject to sexual conflict. We addressed this by using as a model the responses of Drosophila melanogaster females of different ages to receipt of sex peptide (SP), a seminal fluid protein transferred with sperm during mating. SP can mediate sexual conflict, benefitting males while causing fitness costs in females. Virgin and mated females of all ages showed significantly reduced receptivity in response to SP. However, only young virgin females also showed increased egg laying; hence, there was a narrow demographic window of maximal responses to SP. Males gained significant ‘per mating’ fitness benefits only when mating with young females. The pattern completely reversed in matings with older females, where SP transfer was costly. The overall benefits of SP transfer (hence opportunity for selection) therefore reversed with female age. The data reveal a new example of demographic variation in the strength of selection, with convergence and conflicts of interest between males and ageing females occurring over different facets of responses to a sexually antagonistic trait
A theoretical/experimental program to develop active optical pollution sensors
Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology was applied to the assessment of air quality, and its usefulness was evaluated by actual field tests. Necessary hardware was successfully constructed and operated in the field. Measurements of necessary physical parameters, such as SO2 absorption coefficients were successfully completed and theoretical predictions of differential absorption performance were reported. Plume modeling improvements were proposed. A full scale field test of equipment, data analysis and auxiliary data support was conducted in Maryland during September 1976
An experimental/analytical program to assess the utility of lidar for pollution monitoring
The development and demonstration of lidar techniques for the remote measurement of atmospheric constituents and transport processes in the lower troposphere was carried out. Particular emphasis was given to techniques for monitoring SO2 and particulates, the principal pollutants in power plant and industrial plumes. Data from a plume dispersion study conducted in Maryland during September and October 1976 were reduced, and a data base was assembled which is available to the scientific community for plume model verification. Resolving the chemical substructure of Orion-KL
The Kleinmann-Low nebula in Orion (Orion-KL) is the nearest example of a
high-mass star-forming environment. For the first time, we complemented 1.3 mm
Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometric line survey with IRAM 30 m
single-dish observations of the Orion-KL region. Covering a 4 GHz bandwidth in
total, this survey contains over 160 emission lines from 20 species (25
isotopologues), including 11 complex organic molecules (COMs).
At a spatial resolution of 1200 AU, the continuum substructures are resolved.
Extracting the spectra from individual substructures and providing the
intensity-integrated distribution map for each species, we studied the
small-scale chemical variations in this region. Our main results are: (1) We
identify lines from the low-abundance COMs CH3COCH3 and CH3CH2OH, as well as
tentatively detect CH3CHO and long carbon-chains C6H and HC7N. (2) We find that
while most COMs are segregated by type, peaking either towards the hot core
(e.g., N-bearing species) or the compact ridge (e.g., O-bearing species like
HCOOCH3 and CH3OCH3), while the distributions of others do not follow this
segregated structure (e.g., CH3CH2OH, CH3OH, CH3COCH3). (3) We find a second
velocity component of HNCO, SO2, 34SO2, and SO lines, which may be associated
with a strong shock event in the low-velocity outflow. (4) Temperatures and
molecular abundances show large gradients between central condensations and the
outflow regions, illustrating a transition between hot molecular core and
shock-chemistry dominated regimes.
Our observations of spatially resolved chemical variations in Orion-KL
provide the nearest reference source for hot molecular core and outflow
chemistry, which will be an important example for interpreting the chemistry of

Abundant Methanol Masers but no New Evidence for Star Formation in GCM0.253+0.016
We present new observations of the quiescent giant molecular cloud
GCM0.253+0.016 in the Galactic center, using the upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very
Large Array. Observations were made at wavelengths near 1 cm, at K (24 to 26
GHz) and Ka (27 and 36 GHz) bands, with velocity resolutions of 1-3 km/s and
spatial resolutions of ~0.1 pc, at the assumed 8.4 kpc distance of this cloud.
The continuum observations of this cloud are the most sensitive yet made, and
reveal previously undetected emission which we attribute primarily to free-free
emission from external ionization of the cloud. In addition to the sensitive
continuum map, we produce maps of 12 molecular lines: 8 transitions of NH3 --
(1,1),(2,2),(3,3),(4,4),(5,5),(6,6),(7,7) and (9,9), as well as the HC3N (3-2)
and (4-3) lines, and CH3OH 4(-1) - 3(0) the latter of which is known to be a
collisionally-excited maser. We identify 148 CH3OH 4(-1) - 3(0) (36.2 GHz)
sources, of which 68 have brightness temperatures in excess of the highest
temperature measured for this cloud (400 K) and can be confirmed to be masers.
The majority of these masers are concentrated in the southernmost part of the
cloud. We find that neither these masers nor the continuum emission in this
cloud provide strong evidence for ongoing star formation in excess of that
