    Can Modus Vivendi Save Liberalism from Moralism? A Critical Assessment of John Gray’s Political Realism

    This chapter assesses John Gray’s modus vivendi-based justification for liberalism. I argue that his approach is preferable to the more orthodox deontological or teleological justificatory strategies, at least because of the way it can deal with the problem of diversity. But then I show how that is not good news for liberalism, for grounding liberal political authority in a modus vivendi undermines liberalism’s aspiration to occupy a privileged normative position vis-à-vis other kinds of regimes. So modus vivendi can save liberalism from moralism, but at cost many liberals will not be prepared to pay

    The reflexive potential of silence:Emotions, the ‘everyday’ and ethical international relations

    This article argues on behalf of an autoethnographic methodology as one, but not the only, method suited to the excavation of the emotions of everyday international relations. I suggest, drawing on my own lived experiences of writing the Life in the United Kingdom Test specifically, and being ordered deported from the United Kingdom more broadly, that a reflexive practice informed by silence allows scholars to attend to the otherwise discounted and excluded forms of emotional knowledge. As my story unfolds, and the transformative potential of trauma is rehearsed, the possibility of excavating otherwise silenced emotions, guided by an affective empathy, comes to the fore. I suggest, building on my own lived experience, that as the researcher cum agent embraces this position, discounted and discarded stories are revisited. In so doing I present a piece of evocative autoethnography in and of itself while demonstrating the role that emotions can play in the construction of everyday practices of International Relations

    General practitioner advice on physical activity: Analyses in a cohort of older primary health care patients (getABI)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although the benefits of physical activity for health and functioning are recognized to extend throughout life, the physical activity level of most older people is insufficient with respect to current guidelines. The primary health care setting may offer an opportunity to influence and to support older people to become physically active on a regular basis. Currently, there is a lack of data concerning general practitioner (GP) advice on physical activity in Germany. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the rate and characteristics of older patients receiving advice on physical activity from their GP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional study using data collected at 7 years of follow-up of a prospective cohort study (German epidemiological trial on ankle brachial index, getABI). 6,880 unselected patients aged 65 years and above in the primary health care setting in Germany were followed up since October 2001. During the 7-year follow-up telephone interview, 1,937 patients were asked whether their GP had advised them to get regular physical activity within the preceding 12 months. The interview also included questions on socio-demographic and lifestyle variables, medical conditions, and physical activity. Logistic regression analysis (unadjusted and adjusted for all covariables) was used to examine factors associated with receiving advice. Analyses comprised only complete cases with regard to the analysed variables. Results are expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 1,627 analysed patients (median age 77; range 72-93 years; 52.5% women), 534 (32.8%) stated that they had been advised to get regular physical activity. In the adjusted model, those more likely to receive GP advice on physical activity were men (OR [95% CI] 1.34 [1.06-1.70]), patients suffering from pain (1.43 [1.13-1.81]), coronary heart disease and/or myocardial infarction (1.56 [1.21-2.01]), diabetes mellitus (1.79 [1.39-2.30]) or arthritis (1.37 [1.08-1.73]), and patients taking a high (> 5) number of medications (1.41 [1.11-1.80]).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The study revealed a relatively low rate of older primary health care patients receiving GP advice on physical activity. GPs appeared to focus their advice on patients with chronic medical conditions. However, there are likely to be many more patients who would benefit from advice.</p

    Autothermal reforming of palm empty fruit bunch bio-oil: thermodynamic modelling

    This work focuses on thermodynamic analysis of the autothermal reforming of palm empty fruit bunch (PEFB) bio-oil for the production of hydrogen and syngas. PEFB bio-oil composition was simulated using bio-oil surrogates generated from a mixture of acetic acid, phenol, levoglucosan, palmitic acid and furfural. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the hydrogen and syngas yields were not sensitive to actual bio-oil composition, but were determined by a good match of molar elemental composition between real bio-oil and surrogate mixture. The maximum hydrogen yield obtained under constant reaction enthalpy and pressure was about 12 wt% at S/C = 1 and increased to about 18 wt% at S/C = 4; both yields occurring at equivalence ratio Ω of 0.31. The possibility of generating syngas with varying H2 and CO content using autothermal reforming was analysed and application of this process to fuel cells and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is discussed. Using a novel simple modelling methodology, reaction mechanisms were proposed which were able to account for equilibrium product distribution. It was evident that different combinations of reactions could be used to obtain the same equilibrium product concentrations. One proposed reaction mechanism, referred to as the ‘partial oxidation based mechanism’ involved the partial oxidation reaction of the bio-oil to produce hydrogen, with the extent of steam reforming and water gas shift reactions varying depending on the amount of oxygen used. Another proposed mechanism, referred to as the ‘complete oxidation based mechanism’ was represented by thermal decomposition of about 30% of bio-oil and hydrogen production obtained by decomposition, steam reforming, water gas shift and carbon gasification reactions. The importance of these mechanisms in assisting in the eventual choice of catalyst to be used in a real ATR of PEFB bio-oil process was discussed

    Kinetic Regime Change in the Tandem Dehydrative Aromatization of Furan Diels–Alder Products

    Renewable production of <i>p</i>-xylene from [4 + 2] Diels–Alder cycloaddition of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and ethylene with H–Y zeolite catalyst in <i>n</i>-heptane solvent is investigated. Experimental studies varying the solid acid catalyst concentration reveal two kinetic regimes for the <i>p</i>-xylene production rate: (i) a linear regime at low acid site concentrations with activation energy <i>E</i><sub>a</sub> = 10.8 kcal/mol and (ii) a catalyst-independent kinetic regime at high acid site concentrations with activation energy <i>E</i><sub>a</sub> = 20.1 kcal/mol. We carry out hybrid QM/MM calculations with a three-layer embedded cluster ONIOM model to compute the energetics along the main reaction pathway, and a microkinetic model is constructed for the interpretation of the experimental kinetic data. At high solid acid concentrations, <i>p</i>-xylene production is limited by the homogeneous Diels–Alder reaction, whereas at low acid concentrations, the overall rate is limited by the heterogeneously catalyzed dehydration of the Diels–Alder cycloadduct of DMF and ethylene because of an insufficient number of acid sites, despite the dehydration reaction requiring significantly less activation energy. A reduced kinetic model reveals that the production of <i>p</i>-xylene follows the general kinetics of tandem reactions in which the first step is uncatalyzed and the second step is heterogeneously catalyzed. Reaction orders and apparent activation energies of quantum mechanical and microkinetic simulations are in agreement with experimental values
