Constraints on a scale-dependent bias from galaxy clustering
We forecast the future constraints on scale-dependent parametrizations of
galaxy bias and their impact on the estimate of cosmological parameters from
the power spectrum of galaxies measured in a spectroscopic redshift survey. For
the latter we assume a wide survey at relatively large redshifts, similar to
the planned Euclid survey, as baseline for future experiments. To assess the
impact of the bias we perform a Fisher matrix analysis and we adopt two
different parametrizations of scale-dependent bias. The fiducial models for
galaxy bias are calibrated using a mock catalogs of H emitting galaxies
mimicking the expected properties of the objects that will be targeted by the
Euclid survey.
In our analysis we have obtained two main results. First of all, allowing for
a scale-dependent bias does not significantly increase the errors on the other
cosmological parameters apart from the rms amplitude of density fluctuations,
, and the growth index , whose uncertainties increase by a
factor up to two, depending on the bias model adopted. Second, we find that the
accuracy in the linear bias parameter can be estimated to within 1-2\%
at various redshifts regardless of the fiducial model. The non-linear bias
parameters have significantly large errors that depend on the model adopted.
Despite of this, in the more realistic scenarios departures from the simple
linear bias prescription can be detected with a significance at
each redshift explored.
Finally, we use the Fisher Matrix formalism to assess the impact of assuming
an incorrect bias model and found that the systematic errors induced on the
cosmological parameters are similar or even larger than the statistical ones.Comment: new section added; conclusions unchanged; accepted for publication in

Globular Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds.I:BV CCD-Photometry for 11 Clusters
We present BV CCD-data for 11 intermediate-age LMC clusters; the main
conclusions are: 1. in the (V_to, V_cl,m) and (V-to, (V_to-V_cl,m)) planes the
models yield a good overall description of the data; 2. with the current
sample, it is impossible to firmly choose between "classical" and
"overshooting" models; 3. the separation in colour between the MS band and the
Red He-burning Clump is smaller than predicted by theoretical tracks; 4. the
existence of the so-called "RGB phase-transition (Renzini and Buzzoni 1986)

Nanoplastics affect moulting and faecal pellet sinking in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) juveniles
Plastic debris has been identified as a potential threat to Antarctic marine ecosystems, however, the impact of nanoplastics (<1 μm) is currently unexplored. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a keystone species of Southern Ocean pelagic ecosystems, which plays a central role in the Antarctic food webs and carbon (C) cycle. Krill has been shown to rapidly fragment microplastic beads through the digestive system, releasing nanoplastics with unknown toxicological effects. Here we exposed krill juveniles to carboxylic (COOH, anionic) and amino- (NH2, cationic) polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) and we investigated lethal and sub-lethal endpoints after 48 h. The analysis of PS NP suspensions in Antarctic sea water (SW) media showed that PS-COOH formed large agglomerates (1043 ± 121 nm), while PS-NH2 kept their nominal size (56.8 ± 3 nm) during the exposure time. After 48 h, no mortality was found but increase in exuviae production (12.6 ± 1.3%) and reduced swimming activity were observed in juveniles exposed to PS-NH2. The microbial community composition in SW supports the release of krill moults upon PS NP exposure and stimulates further research on the pivotal role of krill in shaping Southern Ocean bacterial assemblages. The presence of fluorescent signal in krill faecal pellets (FPs) confirmed the waterborne ingestion and egestion of PS-COOH at 48 h of exposure. Changes in FP structure and properties were also associated to the incorporation of PS NPs regardless of their surface charge. The effects of PS NPs on krill FP properties were compared to Control 0 h as a reference for full FPs (plastic vs food) and Control 48 h as a reference for more empty-like FPs (plastic vs lack of food). Exposure to PS NPs led to a FP sinking rate comparable to Control 48 h, but significantly lower than Control 0 h (58.40 ± 23.60 m/d and 51.23 ± 28.60 m/d for PS-COOH and PS-NH2; 168.80 ± 74.58 m/d for Control 0 h). Considering the important role played by krill in the food web and C export in the Southern Ocean, the present study provides cues about the potential impact of nanoplastics on Antarctic pelagic ecosystems and their biogeochemical cycles
A New Giant Branch Clump Structure In the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present Washington C, T1 CCD photometry of 21 fields located in the
northern part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and spread over a region of
more than 2.52 degrees approximately 6 degrees from the bar. The surveyed areas
were chosen on the basis of their proximity to SL 388 and SL 509, whose fields
showed the presence of a secondary giant clump, observationally detected by
Bica et al. (1998, AJ, 116, 723). From the collected data we found that most of
the observed field CMDs do not show a separate secondary clump, but rather a
continuous vertical structure (VS), which is clearly seen for the first time.
Its position and size are nearly the same throughout the surveyed regions: it
lies below the Red Giant Clump (RGC) and extends from the bottom of the RGC to
approximately 0.45 mag fainter, spanning the bluest color range of the RGC. The
more numerous the VS stars in a field, the larger the number of LMC giants in
the same zone. Our analysis demonstrate that VS stars belong to the LMC and are
most likely the consequence of some kind of evolutionary process in the LMC,
particularly in those LMC regions with a noticeable large giant population. Our
results suggest that in order to trigger the formation of VS stars, there
should be other conditions besides the appropriate age, metallicity, and the
necessary red giant star density. Indeed, stars satisfying the requisites
mentioned above are commonly found throughout the LMC, but the VS phenomenon is
only clearly seen in some isolated regions. Finally, the fact that clump stars
have an intrinsic luminosity dispersion further constrains the use of the clump

PCSK9 Expression in Epicardial Adipose Tissue : Molecular Association with Local Tissue Inflammation
Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) has the unique property to release mediators that nourish the heart in healthy conditions, an effect that becomes detrimental when volume expands and proinflammatory cytokines start to be produced. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), a proinflammatory mediator involved in atherosclerosis, is also produced by visceral fat. Due to the correlation of inflammation with PCSK9 and EAT enlargement, we evaluated whether PCSK9 was expressed in EAT and associated with EAT inflammation and volume. EAT samples were isolated during surgery. EAT thickness was measured by echocardiography. A microarray was used to explore EAT transcriptoma. The PCSK9 protein levels were measured by Western Blot in EAT and ELISA in plasma. PCSK9 was expressed at both the gene and protein levels in EAT. We found a positive association with EAT thickness and local proinflammatory mediators, in particular, chemokines for monocytes and lymphocytes. No association was found with the circulating PCSK9 level. The expression of PCSK9 in EAT argues that PCSK9 is part of the EAT secretome and EAT inflammation is associated with local PCSK9 expression, regardless of circulating PCSK9 levels. Whether reducing EAT inflammation or PCSK9 local levels may have beneficial effects on EAT metabolism and cardiovascular risk needs further investigations
