Direct Evidence for a Magnetic f-electron Mediated Cooper Pairing Mechanism of Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in CeCoIn5

To identify the microscopic mechanism of heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is an unresolved challenge in quantum matter studies; it may also relate closely to finding the pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Magnetically mediated Cooper pairing has long been the conjectured basis of heavy-fermion superconductivity but no direct verification of this hypothesis was achievable. Here, we use a novel approach based on precision measurements of the heavy-fermion band structure using quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, to reveal quantitatively the momentum-space (k-space) structure of the f-electron magnetic interactions of CeCoIn5. Then, by solving the superconducting gap equations on the two heavy-fermion bands $E_k^{\alpha,\beta}$ with these magnetic interactions as mediators of the Cooper pairing, we derive a series of quantitative predictions about the superconductive state. The agreement found between these diverse predictions and the measured characteristics of superconducting CeCoIn5, then provides direct evidence that the heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is indeed mediated by the f-electron magnetism.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information: 31 pages, 5 figure

Final Calibration of the Berkeley Extreme and Far-Ultraviolet Spectrometer on the ORFEUS-SPAS I and II Missions

The Berkeley Extreme and Far-Ultraviolet Spectrometer (BEFS) flew as part of the ORFEUS telescope on the ORFEUS-SPAS I and II space-shuttle missions in 1993 and 1996, respectively. The data obtained by this instrument have now entered the public domain. To facilitate their use by the astronomical community, we have re-extracted and re-calibrated both data sets, converted them into a standard (FITS) format, and placed them in the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). Integrated disaster recovery: Linking health care and disaster case management

In long-term recovery from natural disasters, the federal government helps to rebuild infrastructure, but individuals face a chaotic and uncoordinated assembly of state and local programs, insurance coverage, and assistance from nongovernmental organizations. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and other organizations have utilized case management, which matches individual needs for housing, health care, employment, and education, etc. with appropriate resources, to coordinate disaster recovery. However, these efforts have had uneven results. Case management limitations include: inability to identify and locate all those in need, implementation barriers, inability to scale services for large urban disasters, and poor sustainability. Linking disaster recovery case management with health care organizations, especially those with pre-existing health care case management programs, is a practical, scalable and sustainable approach to integrating the many aspects of disaster recovery and is a way for building community resilience before and after disasters
