A rapidly converging domain decomposition method for the Helmholtz equation
A new domain decomposition method is introduced for the heterogeneous 2-D and
3-D Helmholtz equations. Transmission conditions based on the perfectly matched
layer (PML) are derived that avoid artificial reflections and match incoming
and outgoing waves at the subdomain interfaces. We focus on a subdivision of
the rectangular domain into many thin subdomains along one of the axes, in
combination with a certain ordering for solving the subdomain problems and a
GMRES outer iteration. When combined with multifrontal methods, the solver has
near-linear cost in examples, due to very small iteration numbers that are
essentially independent of problem size and number of subdomains. It is to our
knowledge only the second method with this property next to the moving PML
sweeping method.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 6 tables - v2 accepted for publication in the

Genome-wide linkage scan reveals multiple susceptibility loci influencing lipid and lipoprotein levels in the Québec Family Study
A genome-wide linkage study was performed to identify chromosomal regions harboring genes influencing lipid and lipoprotein levels. Linkage analyses were conducted for four quantitative lipoprotein/lipid traits, i.e., total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), and LDL-C concentrations, in 930 subjects enrolled in the Québec Family Study. A maximum of 534 pairs of siblings from 292 nuclear families were available. Linkage was tested using both allele-sharing and variance-component linkage methods. The strongest evidence of linkage was found on chromosome 12q14.1 at marker D12S334 for HDL-C, with a logarithm of the odds (LOD) score of 4.06. Chromosomal regions harboring quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for LDL-C included 1q43 (LOD = 2.50), 11q23.2 (LOD = 3.22), 15q26.1 (LOD = 3.11), and 19q13.32 (LOD = 3.59). In the case of triglycerides, three markers located on 2p14, 11p13, and 11q24.1 provided suggestive evidence of linkage (LOD > 1.75). Tests for total cholesterol levels yielded significant evidence of linkage at 15q26.1 and 18q22.3 with the allele-sharing linkage method, but the results were nonsignificant with the variance-component method. In conclusion, this genome scan provides evidence for several QTLs influencing lipid and lipoprotein levels. Promising candidate genes were located in the vicinity of the genomic regions showing evidence of linkage

Early transformation of the Chinese power sector to avoid additional coal lock-in
Emission reduction from the coal-dominated power sector is vital for achieving China's carbon mitigation targets. Although the coal expansion has been slowed down due to the cancellation of and delay in new construction, coal-based power was responsible for over one third of China's energy-related CO2 emissions by 2018. Moreover, with a technical lifetime of over 30 years, current investment in coal-based power could hinder CO2 mitigation until 2050. Therefore, it is important to examine whether the current coal-based power planning aligns with the long-term climate targets. This paper introduces China's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals and an ambitious carbon budget along with global pathways well-below 2 degrees that are divided into five integrated assessment models, which are two national and three global models. We compare the models' results with bottom-up data on current capacity additions and expansion plans to examine if the NDC targets are in line with 2-degree pathways. The key findings are: 1. NDC goals alone are unlikely to lead to significant reductions in coal-based power generation. On the contrary, more plants may be built before 2030; 2. this would require an average of 187–261 TWh of annual coal-based power capacity reduction between 2030 and 2050 to achieve a 2 °C compatible trajectory, which would lead to the stranding of large-scale coal-based power plants; 3. if the reduction in coal power can be brought forward to 2020, the average annual coal-based power reduction required would be 104–155 TWh from 2020 to 2050 and the emissions could peak earlier; 4. early regulations in coal-based power would require accelerated promotion of alternatives between 2020 and 2030, with nuclear, wind and solar power expected to be the most promising alternatives. By presenting the stranding risk and viability of alternatives, we suggest that both the government and enterprises should remain cautious about making new investment in coal-based power sector
Familial resemblance in eating behaviors in men and women from the Quebec Family Study
Objective: It is commonly recognized that genetic, environmental, behavioral, and social factors are involved in the development of obesity. The family environment may play a key role in shaping children's eating behaviors. The purpose of this study was to estimate the degree of familial resemblance in eating behavioral traits (cognitive dietary restraint, disinhibition, and susceptibility to hunger).
Research Methods and Procedures: Eating behavioral traits were assessed with the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire in 282 men and 402 women (202 families) from the Quebec Family Study. Familial resemblance for each trait (adjusted for age, sex, and BMI) was investigated using a familial correlation model.
Results: The pattern of familial correlation showed significant spouse correlation for the three eating behavior phenotypes, as well as significant parent-offspring and sibling correlations for disinhibition and susceptibility to hunger. According to the most parsimonious model, generalized heritability estimates (including genetic and shared familial environmental effects) reached 6%, 18%, and 28% for cognitive dietary restraint, disinhibition, and susceptibility to hunger, respectively.
Discussion: These results suggest that there is a significant familial component to eating behavioral traits but that the additive genetic component appears to be small, with generalized heritability estimates ranging from 6% to 28%. Thus, non-familial environmental factors and gene-gene and gene-environmental interactions seem to be the major determinants of the eating/behavioral traits
Probabilistic analysis of the upwind scheme for transport
We provide a probabilistic analysis of the upwind scheme for
multi-dimensional transport equations. We associate a Markov chain with the
numerical scheme and then obtain a backward representation formula of
Kolmogorov type for the numerical solution. We then understand that the error
induced by the scheme is governed by the fluctuations of the Markov chain
around the characteristics of the flow. We show, in various situations, that
the fluctuations are of diffusive type. As a by-product, we prove that the
scheme is of order 1/2 for an initial datum in BV and of order 1/2-a, for all
a>0, for a Lipschitz continuous initial datum. Our analysis provides a new
interpretation of the numerical diffusion phenomenon
Chimpanzee identification and social network construction through an online citizen science platform
Abstract Citizen science has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years due to its potential to educate and engage the public while providing a means to address a myriad of scientific questions. However, the rise in popularity of citizen science has also been accompanied by concerns about the quality of data emerging from citizen science research projects. We assessed data quality in the online citizen scientist platform Chimp&See, which hosts camera trap videos of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and other species across Equatorial Africa. In particular, we compared detection and identification of individual chimpanzees by citizen scientists with that of experts with years of experience studying those chimpanzees. We found that citizen scientists typically detected the same number of individual chimpanzees as experts, but assigned far fewer identifications (IDs) to those individuals. Those IDs assigned, however, were nearly always in agreement with the IDs provided by experts. We applied the data sets of citizen scientists and experts by constructing social networks from each. We found that both social networks were relatively robust and shared a similar structure, as well as having positively correlated individual network positions. Our findings demonstrate that, although citizen scientists produced a smaller data set based on fewer confirmed IDs, the data strongly reflect expert classifications and can be used for meaningful assessments of group structure and dynamics. This approach expands opportunities for social research and conservation monitoring in great apes and many other individually identifiable species
Machine Learning Classification of Females Susceptibility to Visceral Fat Associated Diseases
The problem of classifying subjects into risk categories is a common challenge in medical research. Machine Learning (ML) methods are widely used in the areas of risk prediction and classification. The primary objective of these algorithms is to predict dichotomous responses (e.g. healthy/at risk) based on several features. Similarly to statistical inference models, also ML models are subject to the common problem of class imbalance. Therefore, they are affected by the majority class increasing the false-negative rate.
In this paper, we built and evaluated eighteen ML models classifying approximately 4300 female participants from the UK Biobank into three categorical risk statuses based on responses for the discretised visceral adipose tissue values from magnetic resonance imaging. We also examined the effect of sampling techniques on classification modelling when dealing with class imbalance.
Results showed that the use of sampling techniques had a significant impact. They not only drove an improvement in predicting patients risk status but also facilitated an increase in the information contained within each variable. Based on domain experts criteria, the three best models for classification were finally identified.
These encouraging results will guide further developments of classification models for predicting visceral adipose tissue without the need for a costly scan
