    Francois Jacobus van Zyl, professor 1960-1978Professor Francois Jacobus van Zyl (6th May 1913-) served as head of the Department of Science of Religion and Missiology, Faculty of Theology (Sec A),University of Pretoria, during the period 1960-1978. This article (compiled from two previously published articles) contains a short biography, a discussion of hisviews on theology, Science of Religion, Philosophy of Religion, and Missiology. He is portrayed as a theologian with Barthian convictions. He worked from a broad theological base which can be described as ‘theology of the Word’. His primary audience was the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk and his theological activities(especially in the period 1960-1983) must be seen in relation to his influential role in the same church

    Developing a Patient-Specific Maxillary Implant Using Additive Manufacturing and Design

    Published Conference ProceedingsMaxillectomy is the surgical removal or resection of the maxilla or upper jaw bone. A total or partial maxillectomy can be performed depending on how far the tumour has spread. This paper will discuss a patient diagnosed with an aggressive tumour in half of the top jaw who had to undergo an operation to remove the hemi-maxilla and orbital floor. Due to the extent and complexity of the defect, it was decided to manufacture an anatomical model of the hard tissues for planning a possible laser-sintered titanium implant using Additive Manufacturing (AM). The CRPM had only two weeks to design and manufacture the titanium implant, due to the severity of the tumour. The anatomical model was sent to the surgeon to cut the nylon model where the bone resection was planned. Furthermore, the prosthodontist made a wax model of the planned titanium frame that was reverse- engineered and used as reference geometry in the design software.Materialise® design suite was used to design the patient-specific maxilla and cutting jig. The EOS M280 Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) system was instrumental in achieving the direct manufacturing of the bio-compatible titanium implant. The EOS P385 system was used to manufacture the pre-operation planning model as well as the cutting jig.The process chain followed to complete this case study will be discussed showing how this intervention improved the quality of life of a SA patient. Furthermore, the proposed paper and presentation will discuss the post-operation review of the patient showing the impact AM had in accelerating patient-specific implant manufacturing. The authors seek to claim a progressed level of maturity in the proposed manufacturing value chain. The claim is based on the successful completion of the analysis and synthesis of the problem , the validated proof-of-concept of the manufacturing process and the in-vivo implementation of the final product

    The views of patients with spinal cord injuries on their rehabilitation experience

    Background and Purpose: Spinal rehabilitation programs seek to enhance the residual functional abilities of people who have an acquired disabling impairment because of SCI. Very little has been published on how patients experience rehabilitation, and what the implication of their experience is on rehabilitation outcomes. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the views of patients with SCI regarding their experience of rehabilitation while in hospital. Materials and Methods: A qualitative exploratory study using semi-structured interviews was employed. Twelve patients constituted the sample of convenience. Qualitative techniques were used to analyze the data. Results: The study revealed a variety of psycho-emotional issues related to the patients’ experience of rehabilitation. Positive issues included being treated humanly, being told the truth about their condition early on, family involvement in rehabilitation and being allowed to contribute to decision making regarding their rehabilitation. Negative issues were mainly their lack of insight into their health condition. Conclusion: The study highlighted important psycho-emotional issues related to the patients’ experience of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation personnel must consider these issues when working with patients with spinal cord injury, to ensure effective rehabilitation outcomes

    Host switching between native and non-native trees in a population of the canker pathogen Chrysoporthe cubensis from Colombia

    The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that Chrysoporthe cubensis on native trees in South America could be the source of the pathogen that causes severe stem cankers and often mortality in commercially propagated Eucalyptus trees. This was done by investigating populations originating from two adjacent Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) plantations in Colombia, and wild Miconia rubiginosa trees (Melastomataceae) growing alongside these stands. Polymorphic microsatellite markers were used to quantify allele sizes in 20 and 39 isolates from the two Eucalyptus stands and 32 isolates from adjacent M. rubiginosa trees. Gene and genotypic diversities were calculated from these data, and population differentiation and assignment tests were performed to ascertain whether the populations were genetically different. Results showed that there were no differences between any of the populations using these techniques, and that they can be treated as a single population. Therefore, the results support the hypothesis that host switching has occurred in C. cubensis in Colombia.http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1365-3059am201

    Influence of dietary lipid sources on sensory characteristics of broiler meat

    ________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract A study was conducted to determine the influence of different dietary lipid sources and inclusion levels on sensory characteristics of chicken breast meat. Eight isoenergetic (15.1 MJ AME/kg DM) and isonitrogenous (223 g CP/kg DM) diets were formulated, using high oleic sunflower oil (HOSO), sunflower oil (SO), fish oil (FO) and tallow (T) at 30 g/kg and 60 g/kg inclusion levels. Eight hundred, day-old Ross 788 broiler males were randomly allocated to the eight treatments (n = 100) and further subdivided into four replicates/treatment (n = 25). All birds receive a commercial starter diet for the first 14 days, where-after the experimental diets were fed for 28 days. At 42 days of age, three birds/replicate (n = 12/treatment) were randomly selected, weighed and slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Breast muscles were removed from the chilled carcasses (4 °C) and de-skinned. Meat samples were wrapped in aluminium foil and steamed (200 °C) before cutting into smaller pieces (2.5 cm 3 ) and served to the respondents (n = 75) of a consumer panel. Each respondent tasted eight meat samples while completing a nine-point hedonic scale questionnaire. Meat samples of the HOSO treatment were preferred, while FO samples were the least acceptable to the respondents. These results suggested that dietary lipid sources could be used to manipulate sensory characteristics of broiler breast meat according to consumer preferences. _______________________________________________________________________________

    A Partial-Closure Canonicity Test to Increase the Efficiency of CbO-Type Algorithms

    Computing formal concepts is a fundamental part of Formal Concept Analysis and the design of increasingly efficient algorithms to carry out this task is a continuing strand of FCA research. Most approaches suffer from the repeated computation of the same formal concepts and, initially, algorithms concentrated on efficient searches through already computed results to detect these repeats, until the so-called canonicity test was introduced. The canonicity test meant that it was sufficient to examine the attributes of a computed concept to determine its newness: searching through previously computed concepts was no longer necessary. The employment of this test in Close-by-One type algorithms has proved to be highly effective. The typical CbO approach is to compute a concept and then test its canonicity. This paper describes a more efficient approach, whereby a concept need only be partially computed in order to carry out the test. Only if it passes the test does the computation of the concept need to be completed. This paper presents this ‘partial-closure’ canonicity test in the In-Close algorithm and compares it to a traditional CbO algorithm to demonstrate the increase in efficiency

    Diseases of groundnut in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and their management

    Groundnut is an important food and cash crop in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, and is grown largely by smallholder farmers under low input conditions. Constraints are many and varied, both between and within the member states, but diseases are generally regarded as major constraints to groundnut production throughout the region. A large number of fungal, viral, nematode, and bacterial diseases of groundnut have been reported. Most of the diseases are widespread, but only a few of them are economically important on a regional basis. In this paper, the current distribution and economic importance of leaf spots, web blotch, rust, gray mould, pod rots, blackhull, Sclerotinia blight, stem rot, seedling diseases, aflatoxin contamination, rosette, groundnut streak necrosis, pod nematode, and pod scab nematode diseases, and various options (chemical control, host-plant resistance and cultural practices) for their management, are briefly reviewed. Future research needs on groundnut diseases in the region are discussed
