Nonparametric reconstruction of the Om diagnostic to test LCDM
Cosmic acceleration is usually related with the unknown dark energy, which
equation of state, w(z), is constrained and numerically confronted with
independent astrophysical data. In order to make a diagnostic of w(z), the
introduction of a null test of dark energy can be done using a diagnostic
function of redshift, Om. In this work we present a nonparametric
reconstruction of this diagnostic using the so-called Loess-Simex factory to
test the concordance model with the advantage that this approach offers an
alternative way to relax the use of priors and find a possible 'w' that
reliably describe the data with no previous knowledge of a cosmological model.
Our results demonstrate that the method applied to the dynamical Om diagnostic
finds a preference for a dark energy model with equation of state w =-2/3,
which correspond to a static domain wall network.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
The Possibility of a Non-Lagrangian Theory of Gravity
General Relativity resembles a very elegant crystal glass: If we touch its
principles, that is, its Lagrangian, there is a risk of breaking everything.
Or, if we will, it is like a short blanket: Curing some problems creates new
problems. This paper is devoted to bring to light the reasons why we pursue the
possibility of a non-Lagrangian theory of gravity under the hypothesis of an
extension of the original general relativity with an ansatz inspired in the

A service evaluation of parent adherence with dysphagia management therapy guidelines: Reports from family carers supporting children with complex needs in Greece
Purpose: Many children with complex needs exhibit eating, drinking and/or swallowing disorders (dysphagia). These children often have associated learning needs, and require assistance from carers for daily tasks such as eating and drinking. The aim of this study was to identify which strategies to manage dysphagia were challenging for family carers, and reasons for any non-adherence.
Method: In this service evaluation researchers observed carers during mealtimes, and investigated carer opinions of strategies used to minimise the risks of dysphagia. Eight children with complex needs aged 3.4 - 7.5 years and their primary family caregiver participated.
Results: Adherence with speech and language pathologists’
dysphagia recommendations overall was over 50% in all but one case. For specific strategies, the highest adherence was observed for diet modifications of foods (89%), communication during the mealtime (83%), amount of food to present (81%) and the pacing of fluids and foods (81%). Lower levels of adherence were identified in relation to postural management (58%), environmental changes (58%), utensils (56%) and preparatory strategies (49%).
Conclusion: Adherence with use of strategies to support mealtimes was over 50% in all but one case. Findings suggest that support is essential in order to promote safe mealtimes, reduce family carers’ stress and increase knowledge, confidence and adherence in implementing dysphagia guidelines in the family home
Blade Sharpness and its Effect on the Testing of Body Armours
Factors such as edge sharpness and tip sharpness have been identified by Horsfall,1 as keyvariables in the testing of stab and slash resistant armours. This paper evaluates the influenceof blade sharpness on the mechanics of penetration and its relationship with a variety ofmaterials used for body armour systems. The differences in performance between blunt andsharp blades are compared by dynamic tests using an instrumented drop tower, measuringpeak loads and energy to penetration. Variance in the initial impact forces required topenetrate body armour between blunt and sharp blades is shown. However, the total energyto penetration for both sharp and blunt knives was found to be similar for a specific bodyarmour system. Dynamic tests were also used to evaluate the effect of wear on bladeperformance by the comparison of the initial loads for puncture and depth of penetration onaramid and metallic armour systems. The effect of sharpness on the reproducibility of testresults is also investigated and discussed. Various test methods are described for themeasurement of sharpness for both stab and slash and compared. The recent development ofa new non-destructive proof test method to measure tip and edge sharpness is also described
