The Lutheran Student Movement in Canada: a brief history and analysis

    Get PDF
The essay is a revision of a paper originally prepared for a joint consultation between the LSMC, the Student Christian Movement and Yanik (a student group in Quebec) held in Montreal in February, 1977. Written shortly after the death of Donald H Voigts, former executive secretary of the Divisions of Educational Service and Campus Foundation Activity of the Lutheran Council in Canada, it was compiled with a view to beginning a process of reflection upon the historical development of the LSMC and of campus ministry in Canada

Phase Diagrams of Three-Component Attractive Ultracold Fermions in One-Dimension

We investigate trions, paired states and quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional SU(3) attractive fermions in external fields by means of the Bethe ansatz and the dressed energy formalism. Analytical results for the ground state energy, critical fields and complete phase diagrams are presented for weak and strong regimes. Numerical solutions of the dressed energy equations allow us to examine how the different phase boundaries modify by varying the inter-component coupling throughout the whole attractive regimes. The pure trionic phase reduces smoothly by decreasing this coupling until the weak limit is reached. In this weak regime, a pure BCS-paired phase can be sustained under certain nonlinear Zeeman splittings. Finally we confirm that the analytic expressions for the physical quantities and resulting phase diagrams are highly accurate in the weak and strong coupling regimes.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, revised version, accepted in New J. The role of momentum correlations is studied in the production of light and medium mass fragments by imposing momentum cut in clusterization the phase space. Our detailed investigation shows that momentum cut has major role to play in the emission of fragments.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

An airborne FLIR detection and warning system for low altitude wind shear

    Get PDF
It is shown through some preliminary flight measurement research that a forward looking infrared radiometer (FLIR) system can be used to successfully detect the cool downdraft of downbursts (microbusts/macrobursts) and thunderstorm gust front outflows that are responsible for most of the low altitude wind shear (LAWS) events. The FLIR system provides a much greater safety margin for the pilot than that provided by reactive designs such as inertial air speed systems. Preliminary results indicate that an advanced airborne FLIR system could provide the pilot with remote indication of microburst (MB) hazards along the flight path ahead of the aircraft. Results of a flight test of a prototype FLIR system show that a minimum warning time of one to four minutes (5 to 10 km), depending on aircraft speed, is available to the pilot prior to the microburst encounter

Rod-like Polyelectrolytes in Presence of Monovalent Salt

We investigate the properties of rigid polyelectrolyte solutions in presence of monovalent salt. The free energy within the Debye-H\"uckel-Bjerrum (DHBj) theory [M. E. Fisher and Y. Levin, {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} 71, 3826 (1993)] is constructed. It is found that at thermodynamic equilibrium the polyelectrolyte solution consists of clusters composed of one polyion and various counterions. The distribution of the cluster densities is determined by finding the minimum of the Helmholtz free energy. The osmotic pressure and the average charge of the cluster are found and their dependence on Manning parameter ξ\xi is elucidated. A good agreement with the experimental results is obtained.Comment: 11 pages, Revtex (using twocolumn style), 15 figures and postscript file. Submitted to Macromomelecule
