Numerical study of metastable states in Ising spin glasses
We study numerically the structure of metastable states in the
Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass. We find that all non-paramagnetic
stationary points of the free energy are organized into pairs, consisting in a
minimum and a saddle of order one, which coalesce in the thermodynamic limit.
Within the annealed approximation, the entropic contribution of these states,
that is the complexity, is compatible with the supersymmetry-breaking
calculation performed in [A.J. Bray and M.A. Moore, J. Phys. C, 13 L469
(1980)]. This result indicates that the supersymmetry is spontaneously broken
in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model
Kaon Condensation in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) Model at High Density
We demonstrate a fully self-consistent microscopic realization of a
kaon-condensed colour-flavour locked state (CFLK0) within the context of a
mean-field NJL model at high density. The properties of this state are shown to
be consistent with the QCD low-energy effective theory once the proper gauge
neutrality conditions are satisfied, and a simple matching procedure is used to
compute the pion decay constant, which agrees with the perturbative QCD result.
The NJL model is used to compare the energies of the CFLK0 state to the parity
even CFL state, and to determine locations of the metal/insulator transition to
a phase with gapless fermionic excitations in the presence of a non-zero
hypercharge chemical potential and a non-zero strange quark mass. The
transition points are compared with results derived previously via effective
theories and with partially self-consistent NJL calculations. We find that the
qualitative physics does not change, but that the transitions are slightly
lower.Comment: 21 pages, ReVTeX4. Clarified discussion and minor change
Mutagenesis as a Diversity Enhancer and Preserver in Evolution Strategies
Proceedings of: 9th International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence (DCAI 2012). Salamanca, March 28-30, 2012Mutagenesis is a process which forces the coverage of certain zones of the search space during the generations of an evolution strategy, by keeping track of the covered ranges for the different variables in the so called gene matrix. Originally introduced as an artifact to control the automated stopping criterion in a memetic algorithm, ESLAT, it also improved the exploration capabilities of the algorithm, even though this was considered a secondary matter and not properly analyzed or tested. This work focuses on this diversity enhancement, redefining mutagenesis to increase this characteristic, measuring this improvement over a set of twenty-seven unconstrained optimization functions to provide statistically significant results. This work was supported in part by Projects CICYT TIN2008-06742-C02-02/TSI, CICYT TEC2008-06732-C02-02/TEC, CAM CONTEXTS (S2009/TIC-1485) and DPS2008-07029-C02-02.Publicad
Finite reduction and Morse index estimates for mechanical systems
A simple version of exact finite dimensional reduction for the variational
setting of mechanical systems is presented. It is worked out by means of a
thorough global version of the implicit function theorem for monotone
operators. Moreover, the Hessian of the reduced function preserves all the
relevant information of the original one, by Schur's complement, which
spontaneously appears in this context. Finally, the results are
straightforwardly extended to the case of a Dirichlet problem on a bounded
domain.Comment: 13 pages; v2: minor changes, to appear in Nonlinear Differential

Quantum System Identification by Bayesian Analysis of Noisy Data: Beyond Hamiltonian Tomography
We consider how to characterize the dynamics of a quantum system from a
restricted set of initial states and measurements using Bayesian analysis.
Previous work has shown that Hamiltonian systems can be well estimated from
analysis of noisy data. Here we show how to generalize this approach to systems
with moderate dephasing in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian. We illustrate the
process for a range of three-level quantum systems. The results suggest that
the Bayesian estimation of the frequencies and dephasing rates is generally
highly accurate and the main source of errors are errors in the reconstructed
Hamiltonian basis.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Ab Initio Evidence for the Formation of Impurity d(3z^2-r^2) Holes in Doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4
Using the spin unrestricted Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr density functional, we
computed the electronic structure of explicitly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x =
0.125, 0.25, and 0.5). At each doping level, an impurity hole band is formed
within the undoped insulating gap. This band is well-localized to CuO_6
octahedra adjacent to the Sr impurities. The nature of the impurity hole is
A_{1g} in symmetry, formed primarily from the z^2 orbital on the Cu and p_z
orbitals on the apical O's. There is a strong triplet coupling of this hole
with the intrinsic B_{1g} Cu x^2-y^2/O1 p_{sigma} hole on the same site.
Optimization of the c coordinate of the apical O's in the doped CuO_6
octahedron lead to an asymmetric anti-Jahn-Teller distortion of the O2 atoms
toward the central Cu. In particular, the O2 atom between the Cu and Sr is
displaced 0.26 A while the O2 atom between the Cu and La is displaced 0.10 A.
Contrary to expectations, investigation of a 0.1 A enhanced Jahn-Teller
distortion of this octahedron does not force formation of an x^2-y^2 hole, but
instead leads to migration of the z^2 hole to the four other CuO_6 octahedra
surrounding the Sr impurity. This latter observation offers a simple
explanation for the bifurcation of the Sr-O2 distance revealed in x-ray
absorption fine structure data.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. B. See http://www.firstprinciples.com for

Core reconstruction in pseudopotential calculations
A new method is presented for obtaining all-electron results from a
pseudopotential calculation. This is achieved by carrying out a localised
calculation in the region of an atomic nucleus using the embedding potential
method of Inglesfield [J.Phys. C {\bf 14}, 3795 (1981)]. In this method the
core region is \emph{reconstructed}, and none of the simplifying approximations
(such as spherical symmetry of the charge density/potential or frozen core
electrons) that previous solutions to this problem have required are made. The
embedding method requires an accurate real space Green function, and an
analysis of the errors introduced in constructing this from a set of numerical
eigenstates is given. Results are presented for an all-electron reconstruction
of bulk aluminium, for both the charge density and the density of states.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

Automated synthesis of transmission lines loaded with complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) and open complementary split ring resonators (OCSRRs) through aggressive space mapping (ASM)
This paper is focused on the application of space mapping optimization to the automated synthesis of
transmission lines loaded with complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) and open complementary split ring resonators (OCSRRs). These structures are of interest for the implementation of resonant-type metamaterial transmission lines and for the design of planar microwave circuits based on such complementary resonators. The paper presents a method to generate the layouts of CSRR- and
OCSRR-loaded microstrip lines from the elements of their equivalent circuit models. Using the so-called aggressive space mapping, a specific implementation that uses quasi-Newton type iteration, we have developed synthesis algorithms that are able to provide the topology of these CSRR and OCSRR-loaded lines in few steps. The most relevant aspect, however, is that this synthesis process is completely
automatic, i.e., it does not require any action from the designers, other than initiating the algorithm. Moreover, this technique can be translated to other electrically small planar elements described by lumped element equivalent circuit models. This work has been partially supported by MICIIN-Spain (Projects TEC2010-17512 METATRANSFER, TEC2010-21520-C04-01 AVANSAT, CONSOLIDER EMET CSD2008-00066, and Grant AP2008-04707), Generalitat de Catalunya (Project 2009SGR-421), and MITyC-Spain (Project TSI-020100-2010-169 METASINTESIS).
