    Star formation and dust extinction in nearby star forming and starburst galaxies

    We study the star formation rate and dust extinction properties of a sample of nearby star forming galaxies as derived from Halpha and UV (2000 A) observations and we compare them to those of a sample of starburst galaxies. The dust extinction in Halpha is estimated from the Balmer decrement and the extinction in UV using the FIR to UV flux ratio or the attenuation law for starburst galaxies of Calzetti et al. The Halpha and UV emissions are strongly correlated with a very low scatter for the star forming objects and with a much higher scatter for the starburst galaxies. The Halpha to UV flux ratio is found larger by a factor ~ 2 for the starburst galaxies. We compare both samples with a purely UV selected sample of galaxies and we conclude that the mean Halpha and UV properties of nearby star forming galaxies are more representative of UV selected galaxies than starburst galaxies. We emphasize that the Halpha to UV flux ratio is strongly dependent on the dust extinction: the positive correlation found between F{Halpha}/F{UV}$ and F{FIR}/F{UV} vanishes when the Halpha and UV flux are corrected for dust extinction. The Halpha to UV flux ratios converted into star formation rate and combined with the Balmer decrement measurements are tentatively used to estimate the dust extinction in UV.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Experimental investigation of the mooring system of a wave energy converter in operating and extreme wave conditions

    A proper design of the mooring systems for Wave Energy Converters (WECs) requires an accurate investigation of both operating and extreme wave conditions. A careful analysis of these systems is required to design a mooring configuration that ensures station keeping, reliability, maintainability, and low costs, without affecting the WEC dynamics. In this context, an experimental campaign on a 1:20 scaled prototype of the ISWEC (Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter), focusing on the influence of the mooring layout on loads in extreme wave conditions, is presented and discussed. Two mooring configurations composed of multiple slack catenaries with sub-surface buoys, with or without clump-weights, have been designed and investigated experimentally. Tests in regular, irregular, and extreme waves for a moored model of the ISWEC device have been performed at the University of Naples Federico II. The aim is to identify a mooring solution that could guarantee both correct operation of the device and load carrying in extreme sea conditions. Pitch motion and loads in the rotational joint have been considered as indicators of the device hydrodynamic behavior and mooring configuration impact on the WEC

    Social media adoption in Italian firms. Opportunities and challenges for lagging regions

    Social media are an important growth opportunity for firms, especially small-sized ones operating in peripheral and lagging regions. In this paper, we investigate not only whether firms are able to take this opportunity, but also if they are able to face the challenge of adopting social media at a professional level to obtain a significant economic impact, measured in terms of exporting activities. Exploring the Italian case, our empirical study indicates that smaller firms in lagging areas are more likely to adopt social media but at the same time less likely to use them at a professional level. This reflects poor strategic targets of social media adoption and lower probabilities of entering international markets

    High accuracy images and range based acquiring for artistic handworks 3D-models

    The research topics and the applications in the Geomatic area are often connected to the land knowledge and management or to human artefacts usually studied and analyzed from expert of other areas. When these subjects are a part of the Cultural Heritage the survey methodology for the documentation and the knowledge need to consider the final users (belong to different disciplines), in order to realize correct descriptive products suitable for all the actors involved in the preservation and the safeguard of the Cultural Heritage. During the last decade one of the important aim related to the cooperation between the Geomatics group of Politecnico di Torino and the experts working on archaeological sites is to join the new Geomatic methodology and techniques in order to realize documents and products, usable by the specialists, aimed to the archaeological site knowledge and documentation. The past applications were focused on the ancient city, from the urban scale through the archaeological evidences up till the architectural elements. The paper deal with the last experiences of the research group relating to two important archaeological objects. In particular the archaeological artefacts are figurative relief featured by small dimension, carved in the marble and belonging to two architectural elements; the subjects are two theatrical masks, one comical featured and the other tragical. In order to aid and support other analyses involving restoration strategies one of the goals of the last expedition was the documentation, the survey and modelling of the artefacts. According to the complex shape of the theatrical masks, and in order to obtain all the information requested for a correct survey documentation, a triangulation-based LiDAR system was employed (HandyScan 3D- model HZ). Moreover, since the LiDAR survey was performed on the more complex decorated surface (theatrical masks) in order to achieve a complete 3D model of the marble blocks a photogrammetric survey was realized. In the paper some topics are going to be described, highlighting advantages coming from multi-sensor data fusion techniques, both for obtaining multi-scale models and for general accuracy improvement. Some discussed topics are: The acquisition phases and the obtained results of the 3D HandyScan survey, the photogrammetric processing steps and the realized products, the assembling and integration of the different kinds of data, the 3D representation and the photorealistic modeling phases

    Analysis and Design of a 1.8-GHz CMOS LC Quadrature VCO

    This paper presents a quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) based on the coupling of two LC-tank VCOs. A simplified theoretical analysis for the oscillation frequency and phase noise displayed by the QVCO in the 1/f/sup 3/ region is developed, and good agreement is found between theory and simulation results. A prototype for the QVCO was implemented in a 0.35-/spl mu/m CMOS process with three standard metal layers. The QVCO could be tuned between 1.64 and 1.97 GHz, and showed a phase noise of -140 dBc/Hz or less across the tuning range at a 3-MHz offset frequency from the carrier, for a current consumption of 25 mA from a 2-V power supply. The equivalent phase error between I and Q signals was at most 0.25/spl deg/

    Optical spectroscopy of galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster

    Optical spectroscopy of 76 galaxies, 48 of which are projected in the direction of the Virgo cluster and 28 onto the Coma-A1367 supercluster, is reported. Adding these new measurements to those found in the literature, the redshift completeness in the Virgo region becomes 92% at B_T<=16.0 and 68% at B_T<=18.0. The one of CGCG galaxies in the direction of the Coma-A1367 supercluster becomes 98%. The Virgo cluster membership estimates obtained on morphological grounds by Binggeli et al. (1985) are confirmed in all cases. However, several "possible members" classified as BCD (if in the cluster) are found instead to be giant emission-line galaxies in the background of the Virgo clusterComment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for pubblication in A&

    Elementary plastic events in amorphous silica

    Plastic instabilities in amorphous materials are often studied using idealized models of binary mixtures that do not capture accurately molecular interactions and bonding present in real glasses. Here we study atomic-scale plastic instabilities in a three-dimensional molecular dynamics model of silica glass under quasistatic shear. We identify two distinct types of elementary plastic events, one is a standard quasilocalized atomic rearrangement while the second is a bond-breaking event that is absent in simplified models of fragile glass formers. Our results show that both plastic events can be predicted by a drop of the lowest nonzero eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix that vanishes at a critical strain. Remarkably, we find very high correlation between the associated eigenvectors and the nonaffine displacement fields accompanying the bond-breaking event, predicting the locus of structural failure. Both eigenvectors and nonaffine displacement fields display an Eshelby-like quadrupolar structure for both failure modes, rearrangement, and bond breaking Our results thus clarify the nature of atomic-scale plastic instabilities in silica glasses, providing useful information for the development of mesoscale models of amorphous plasticity

    The psychological impact of COVID-19 on people suffering from dysfunctional eating behaviours: A linguistic analysis of the contents shared in an online community during the lockdown

    The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread several months ago from China and it is now a global pandemic. The experience of lockdown has been an undesirable condition for people with mental health problems, including eating disorders. The present study has the aim of understanding the impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with selfreported disordered eating behaviours. A linguistic analysis was carried out with regard to the online posts and comments published by 1971 individuals (86% women) in a Facebook online community focusing on EDs during the lockdown. A total of 244 posts and 3603 comments were collected during the 56 days of lockdown (from the 10th of March until the 4th of May 2020) in Italy and were analysed by Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software. The results showed that words related to peer support decreased in posts over time, and that anxiety and anger increased in the published comments. Moreover, greater feelings of negativity and anxiety were found in posts and comments throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as lesser use of words related to positive emotions. Thematic qualitative analysis revealed eight themes that described the main subjective components of ED symptomatology and distress during the first COVID-19 lockdown. The current findings can help in delivering tailored treatments to people with eating disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic
