Rice (Oryza sativa) response to temperature at similar vapour pressure deficit

Rice is one of the most important crops that provide food for most of the poor in the world. Rice production is highly vulnerable to increase in growing temperature and one strategy to cope is to use adapted genotypes. This study aims to determine rice physiological and growth responses to temperature at similar vapour pressure deficit to understand mechanisms to select for genotypes or traits adapted to high temperature. Two experiments in the Climatron of NIAES, Tsukuba, Japan: 35°C/22°C day/night temperature and 70% RH as high temperature compared with 32°C/22°C and 68% RH as control, and 32°C/22°C and 70% RH as control compared with 28°C/22°C and 69% RH as low temperature. The experiments used Akihikari, IR64, N22 and Takanari. Maximum photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration significantly increased while intercellular CO 2 concentration remained similar in N22 after 30 days of high temperature treatment. This translated to higher biomass in N22 during the early growth. Stem sucrose content in N22 was also highest in both temperatures. In the low temperature experiment, transpiration, intercellular CO 2 concentration and stomatal conductance in all the genotypes increased in the 32°C/22°C compared to those in the 28°C/22°C. However, there was no difference in the photosynthetic rate and total biomass between the temperatures. Total biomass followed similar trend as the leaf biomass. Takanari had higher total biomass in both temperatures. Stem sucrose content in Akihikari was higher in both temperatures. (Texte intégral

The Amended Canadian Patent Act: General Amendments and Pharmaceutical Patents Compulsory Licensing Provisions

On November 19, 1987, the Canadian Senate gave final approval to a number of far-reaching and controversial amendments to the Canadian Patent Act ( Amending Act ). On the same day, following Senate approval, the Bill C-22 became law upon royal assent. The Patent Act, enacted in 1935, had remained largely unchanged, notwithstanding amendments in 1952 and 1969. The present amendments therefore constitute an unprecedented overhaul of the Candian law of patents

Evidence for the pair-breaking process in 116,117Sn

The nuclear level densities of 116,117Sn below the neutron separation energy have been determined experimentally from the (3He,alpha gamma) and (3He,3He gamma') reactions, respectively. The level densities show a characteristic exponential increase and a difference in magnitude due to the odd-even effect of the nuclear systems. In addition, the level densities display pronounced step-like structures that are interpreted as signatures of subsequent breaking of nucleon pairs.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The title mol-ecule, C(22)H(23)N(3)O(2), was obtained via an intra-molecular cyclo-addition of an azomethine ylide and an alkene tethered by a benzimidazole unit. The benzoimidazole unit is essentially planar, with an r.m.s. deviation of 0.0087 Å from the nine constituent atoms. It has a cis fusion of the two pyrrolidine rings as well as a cis ester appendage. The two pyrrolidine rings rings have envelope conformations. The crystal packing is stabilized by aromatic π-π stacking of parallel benzimidazole ring systems, with a centroid-to-centroid distance of 3.518 (6) Å. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O contacts may also play a role in the stability of the packing

Application of the RMF mass model to the r-process and the influence of mass uncertainties

A new mass table calculated by the relativistic mean field approach with the state-dependent BCS method for the pairing correlation is applied for the first time to study r-process nucleosynthesis. The solar r-process abundance is well reproduced within a waiting-point approximation approach. Using an exponential fitting procedure to find the required astrophysical conditions, the influence of mass uncertainty is investigated. R-process calculations using the FRDM, ETFSI-Q and HFB-13 mass tables have been used for that purpose. It is found that the nuclear physical uncertainty can significantly influence the deduced astrophysical conditions for the r-process site. In addition, the influence of the shell closure and shape transition have been examined in detail in the r-process simulations.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. C, 22 pages, 9 figure

Spontaneous immunogenicity of ribosomal P0 protein in patients with benign and malignant breast lesions and delay of mammary tumor growth in P0-vaccinated mice

A common carboxyl-terminal epitope (C-22 P0) of the ribosomal P proteins (P0, P1 and P2) was shown to elicit autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in head and neck cancer patients. In this report we provide evidence for the in vivo immunogenicity of the P0 protein in breast cancer patients. Using recombinant P proteins, we demonstrated that sera from breast carcinoma patients (8/75) displayed significant reactivity to P0 protein when compared with healthy donor sera (0/45). Four out of the eight sera showed simultaneous reactivity to all P proteins. Breast benign tumor (3/17) and mammary hyperplasia (3/17) patient sera also showed significant reactivity to P proteins, thus suggesting that the occurrence of P protein autoantibodies might reveal mammary cell cycle dysregulation. Patient sera reacting with all P proteins recognized C-22 P0. Anti-P0 autoantibodies did not correlate with prognostic parameters of breast carcinomas. High level expression of C-22 P0 was found in mammary carcinomas compared with normal adjacent epithelium and benign lesions. To determine the antitumor activity of P0 as an immunogen, BALB-neuT transgenic mice displaying age-related breast cancer progression were vaccinated using xenogeneic P0 at the stage of mammary atypical hyperplasia. P0 vaccination significantly delayed the onset of mouse mammary tumors that overexpressed C-22 P0. Sera from P0 vaccinated mice recognized C-22 P0. Evidence for immunity to the P0 protein, its overexpression in carcinomas and its peculiar surface localization on cancer cells, along with its antitumor activity as an immunogen might be relevant for the use of P0 protein in monitoring cancer progression and in planning immunotherapeutic strategies

Highly anisotropic energy gap in superconducting Ba(Fe0.9_{0.9}Co0.1_{0.1})2_{2}As2_{2} from optical conductivity measurements

We have measured the complex dynamical conductivity, σ=σ1+iσ2\sigma = \sigma_{1} + i\sigma_{2}, of superconducting Ba(Fe0.9_{0.9}Co0.1_{0.1})2_{2}As2_{2} (Tc=22T_{c} = 22 K) at terahertz frequencies and temperatures 2 - 30 K. In the frequency dependence of σ1\sigma_{1} below TcT_{c}, we observe clear signatures of the superconducting energy gap opening. The temperature dependence of σ1\sigma_{1} demonstrates a pronounced coherence peak at frequencies below 15 cm1^{-1} (1.8 meV). The temperature dependence of the penetration depth, calculated from σ2\sigma_{2}, shows power-law behavior at the lowest temperatures. Analysis of the conductivity data with a two-gap model, gives the smaller isotropic s-wave gap of ΔA=3\Delta_{A} = 3 meV, while the larger gap is highly anisotropic with possible nodes and its rms amplitude is Δ0=8\Delta_{0} = 8 meV. Overall, our results are consistent with a two-band superconductor with an s±s_{\pm} gap symmetry.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, discussion on pair-barking scattering and possible lifting of the nodes is adde

Influence Functional for Decoherence of Interacting Electrons in Disordered Conductors

We have rederived the controversial influence functional approach of Golubev and Zaikin (GZ) for interacting electrons in disordered metals in a way that allows us to show its equivalence, before disorder averaging, to diagrammatic Keldysh perturbation theory. By representing a certain Pauli factor (1-2 rho) occuring in GZ's effective action in the frequency domain (instead of the time domain, as GZ do), we also achieve a more accurate treatment of recoil effects. With this change, GZ's approach reproduces, in a remarkably simple way, the standard, generally accepted result for the decoherence rate. -- The main text and appendix A.1 to A.3 of the present paper have already been published previously; for convenience, they are included here again, together with five additional, lengthy appendices containing relevant technical details.Comment: Final version, as submitted to IJMPB. 106 pages, 11 figures. First 16 pages contain summary of main results. Appendix A summarizes key technical steps, with a new section A.4 on "Perturbative vs. Nonperturbative Methods". Appendix C.4 on thermal weighting has been extended to include discussion [see Eqs.(C.22-24)] of average energy of electron trajectorie
