    Characterization of nematic liquid crystals at microwave frequencies

    The use of nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures for microwave frequency applications presents a fundamental drawback: many of these mixtures have not been properly characterized at these frequencies, and researchers do not have an a priori clear idea of which behavior they can expect. This work is focused on developing a new procedure for the extraction of the main parameters of a nematic liquid crystal: dielectric permittivity and loss tangent at 11 GHz under different polarization voltages; splay elastic constant K11, which allows calculation of the threshold voltage (Vth); and rotational viscosity ¿11, which allows calculating the response time of any arbitrary device. These properties will be calculated by using a resonator-based method, which is implemented with a new topology of substrate integrated transmission line. The LC molecules should be rotated (polarized) by applying an electric field in order to extract the characteristic parameters; thus, the transmission line needs to have two conductors and low electric losses in order to preserve the integrity of the measurements. This method was applied to a well-known liquid crystal mixture (GT3-23002 from MERCK) obtaining the permittivity and loss tangent versus bias voltage curves, the splay elastic constant, and the rotational viscosity of the mixture.     Water Quality of the Beach in an Urban and not Urban Environment

    Numerous studies and theories have emerged for evaluating the quality of beaches using different parameters. In recent years in the European region, one of the most important aspects when evaluating a beach is the quality of water and sand. The quality of water is represented by the amount of Intestinal Enterococcus and Escherichia coli. This parameter is essential and others to obtain the Blue Flag, indicating that the user of the beach can swim safely. The European Directive 2006/7/EC establishes the limits of E. coli and Enterococcus that may exist in bathing water. However, it should be noted that each ecosystem is unique, and therefore the characteristics a beach are not the same per example if you are in an inland sea, or an ocean, or equal if they are close to an urban or a natural area. In this paper, 1,392 beaches in Spain have been analysed, and it has been observed that in the Mediterranean, the beaches have a lower concentration of bacteria than other areas. In addition, it appears that the sandy beaches and urban beaches have a higher content of bacteria that natural and gravel beaches

    Multi-class Gaussian Process Classification with Noisy Inputs

    It is a common practice in the machine learning community to assume that the observed data are noise-free in the input attributes. Nevertheless, scenarios with input noise are common in real problems, as measurements are never perfectly accurate. If this input noise is not taken into account, a supervised machine learning method is expected to perform sub-optimally. In this paper, we focus on multi-class classification problems and use Gaussian processes (GPs) as the underlying classifier. Motivated by a data set coming from the astrophysics domain, we hypothesize that the observed data may contain noise in the inputs. Therefore, we devise several multi-class GP classifiers that can account for input noise. Such classifiers can be efficiently trained using variational inference to approximate the posterior distribution of the latent variables of the model. Moreover, in some situations, the amount of noise can be known before-hand. If this is the case, it can be readily introduced in the proposed methods. This prior information is expected to lead to better performance results. We have evaluated the proposed methods by carrying out several experiments, involving synthetic and real data. These include several data sets from the UCI repository, the MNIST data set and a data set coming from astrophysics. The results obtained show that, although the classification error is similar across methods, the predictive distribution of the proposed methods is better, in terms of the test log-likelihood, than the predictive distribution of a classifier based on GPs that ignores input noiseWe would like to thank M.     Modelling TiO2 photoanodes for PEC water splitting: Decoupling the influence of intrinsic material properties and film thickness

    Semiconductor metal oxides are intensively studied in electrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. On a series of nanoparticulate TiO2 photoanodes, we analyze specific fabrication variables by means of data fitting. First, the experimental outcome is gathered using PEC characterization techniques, mostly cyclic voltammetry and transient photocurrent measurements. Subsequently, we apply models to gain insights into the involved charge trapping and transfer phenomena. We find that capacitance coefficients and the switch-on transient kinetics depend on the TiO2 layer thickness, respectively indicating surface mechanisms and stationary regimes that are mediated by light accessibility. On the contrary, exponential factors of capacitance are independent of thickness, but reflect changes in the density of electron states with different sintering atmospheres. Also, the transfer resistance in the electrolyte side is indirectly influenced by sintering. Through meticulous quantitative analysis of trends, we stablish simple mathematical relationships that connect thickness-dependent parameters. This knowledge delves into fundamental mechanisms governing the TiO2 photoelectrode behaviour, and aims to facilitate further improvements in the efficiency of materials and electrodes for green hydrogen production

    Overexploitation and water quality in the Crevillente aquifer (Alicante, SE Spain)

    The Crevillente aquifer is a karstic aquifer, situated in Alicante province in the SE of Spain. The aquifer basically comprises a series of Jurassic limestones and dolomites, belonging to the Betic Cordillera. Intense exploitation of the aquifer started in the early 1960s. Exploitation was initially concentrated in two sectors of the Sierra de Crevillente and, years later, extended to a third sector. As a consequence of abstractions that were much greater than recharge into the system, a continual drop in the water level persisted for several decades. These abstractions have occasionally caused local dewatering over depths of more than 300 m. From a hydrogeological point of view, the aquifer dewatering in one of the sectors was accompanied by increased mineralization and a fall in quality of the groundwater, and several boreholes had to be abandoned. In recent years, the degree to which the aquifer is overexploited has fallen considerably, and it appears to have entered a new hydrodynamic stage. New hydrogeochemical characterisations have been carried out, which indicate that the aquifer water is relatively strongly mineralised due, fundamentally, to the dissolution of evaporite rocks.     Gene Expression Analyses in Non Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer Reveals a Role for Alternative Splicing and Tp53 Status

    Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) represents a crucial problem for the national health care systems due to its high rates of recurrence and the consequent need of frequent follow-ups. Here, gene expression analyses in patients diagnosed as NMIBC were performed to determine those molecular pathways involved in tumor initiation, finding that both MYC and E2F are up regulated and helps to tumor initiation and progression. Our results also support an important involvement of alternative splicing events, modifying key pathways to favour bladder tumor evolution. Finally, since MDM2 showed differential exon usage, mutations in TP53 and its protein expression have been also studied in the same patients. Our data support that recurrence is epigenetically mediated and favoured by an increase protein expression of TP53, which appears more frequently mutated in advanced stages and grades, being associated to a worse prognosis. Therefore, TP53 mutational status could be used as a potential biomarker in the first stages of NMIBC to predict recurrence and prognosis.We express our deepest acknowledgement to patients and their families.     Balanced Hermitian metrics from SU(2)-structures

    We study the intrinsic geometrical structure of hypersurfaces in 6-manifolds carrying a balanced Hermitian SU(3)-structure, which we call {\em balanced} SU(2)-{\em structures}. We provide conditions which imply that such a 5-manifold can be isometrically embedded as a hypersurface in a manifold with a balanced SU(3)-structure. We show that any 5-dimensional compact nilmanifold has an invariant balanced SU(2)-structure as well as new examples of balanced Hermitian SU(3)-metrics constructed from balanced SU(2)-structures. Moreover, for n=3,4n=3,4, we present examples of compact manifolds, endowed with a balanced SU(n)-structure, such that the corresponding Bismut connection has holonomy equal to SU(n)

    Single waveguide silicon-organic hybrid modulator

    We present a novel silicon-organic hybrid modulator based on an integrated dual-mode interferometer. The modulator offers a compact, simplified design and enhanced robustness to on-chip fluctuations of temperature compared to conventional Mach-Zehnder based systems. A prototype modulator showing a voltage dependent transmission spectrum is obtained by cladding a dual-mode waveguide in a 250 nm silicon-on-insulator technology with a customized organic electro-optic layer. Estimated phase shifts and corresponding figures of merit are discussed in this contribution. The used organic layer is based on the guest-host approach with customized donor-acceptor chromophore embedded and poled in a poly(methylmethacrylate) matrix.
