    Sexual Relationships in Hispanic Countries: a Literature Review

The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11930-020-00272-6Purpose of Review: Sexuality is a complex dimension for which culture seems to play an important role, particularly in countries that are more traditional. This review summarizes the knowledge about sexual relationships in Hispanic countries, considering sexual debut, attitudes, behaviors, and satisfaction. Recent Findings: In line with the literature reviewed, the sexual double standard seems to be continuing to influence sexual relationships. Some countries show more open expressions of sexuality based on the level of gender inequality or sexualized context, and within countries, variables such as religious commitment, family characteristics, and access to resources may play important roles in sexuality. Summary: Future research, policies, and interventions should consider these specific characteristics, including these forms of expression of sexuality, in the adjustment of cross-cultural and cross-national strategies

    In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Psychological Science Accelerator coordinated three large-scale psychological studies to examine the effects of loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations on behavioral intentions and affective measures. The data collected (April to October 2020) included specific measures for each experimental study, a general questionnaire examining health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, geographical and cultural context characterization, and demographic information for each participant. Each participant started the study with the same general questions and then was randomized to complete either one longer experiment or two shorter experiments. Data were provided by 73,223 participants with varying completion rates. Participants completed the survey from 111 geopolitical regions in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset described here is provided in both raw and processed formats to facilitate re-use and further analyses. The dataset offers secondary analytic opportunities to explore coping, framing, and self-determination across a diverse, global sample obtained at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which can be merged with other time-sampled or geographic data

    Omecamtiv mecarbil in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, GALACTIC‐HF: baseline characteristics and comparison with contemporary clinical trials

    Aims: The safety and efficacy of the novel selective cardiac myosin activator, omecamtiv mecarbil, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is tested in the Global Approach to Lowering Adverse Cardiac outcomes Through Improving Contractility in Heart Failure (GALACTIC‐HF) trial. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of participants in GALACTIC‐HF and how these compare with other contemporary trials. Methods and Results: Adults with established HFrEF, New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA) ≄ II, EF ≀35%, elevated natriuretic peptides and either current hospitalization for HF or history of hospitalization/ emergency department visit for HF within a year were randomized to either placebo or omecamtiv mecarbil (pharmacokinetic‐guided dosing: 25, 37.5 or 50 mg bid). 8256 patients [male (79%), non‐white (22%), mean age 65 years] were enrolled with a mean EF 27%, ischemic etiology in 54%, NYHA II 53% and III/IV 47%, and median NT‐proBNP 1971 pg/mL. HF therapies at baseline were among the most effectively employed in contemporary HF trials. GALACTIC‐HF randomized patients representative of recent HF registries and trials with substantial numbers of patients also having characteristics understudied in previous trials including more from North America (n = 1386), enrolled as inpatients (n = 2084), systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg (n = 1127), estimated glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 528), and treated with sacubitril‐valsartan at baseline (n = 1594). Conclusions: GALACTIC‐HF enrolled a well‐treated, high‐risk population from both inpatient and outpatient settings, which will provide a definitive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy, as well as informing its potential future implementation

    Spatial and environmental variation in phyllostomid bat (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) distribution in Mexico

    Species’ spatial distribution patterns allow us to understand the establishment of different biotic components in different environmental conditions. This study analyzes the spatial distribution of the Phyllostomidae family in Mexico to identify groups of species that occur in similar sites, the environmental conditions associated with species distribution, and the percent of overlap with human–modified areas. The results suggest six groups of sites with particular species composition. The spatial variation in richness pattern was associated with species tolerance to environmental conditions, such as minimum temperature and tree cover. The convergence between species distribution and modified areas varied per species feeding guild. Insectivorous and nectarivorous bats were sensitive species because they occurred in narrow environmental conditions and their distributions overlapped with areas modified by human activities. The approach implemented here analyzes regional species distributions and estimates their environmental requirements, contributing to the development of optimal conservation strategies for susceptible bat species

    Unusual Conformation of a Dinuclear Paddle Wheel Copper(II) Complex. Synthesis, Structural Characterization and EPR Studies

    An unusual and unique conformation of a paddle wheel type binuclear copper­(II) complex containing acetate and acetamido ligands, {Cu<sub>2</sub>(ÎŒ<sub>2</sub>-O<sub>2</sub>CCH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>4</sub>}­(OCNH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>) (<b>1</b>), was obtained by solvothermal synthesis. The structural characterization of this compound shows that the apical (acetamido) ligands are disposed at a 62° dihedral angle, generating a special conformation as a consequence of the synthetic method used. This conformation has not been reported in other paddle wheel copper­(II) tetraacetate compounds. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of powder samples of (<b>1</b>) were obtained at 9.5 and 33.8 GHz, while single crystal spectra were obtained at 33.8 GHz with a <i><b>B</b></i><sub>0</sub> applied in three orthogonal planes. The fit of the single crystal experimental data allowed gave <i>g</i><sub>∄</sub> = 2.345 ± 0.003, and <i>g</i><sub>⊄</sub> = 2.057 ± 0.005. The angular variation of the EPR line allows evaluation of the fine structure of (<b>1</b>), giving <i>D</i> = −0.337 ± 0.002 cm<sup>–1</sup> and <i>E</i> = −0.005 ± 0.001 cm<sup>–1</sup>. The line width angular dependence, used together with the Anderson model and Kubo–Tomita theory, permitted the interdimer interaction to be evaluated as |<i>J</i>â€Č| = (0.051 ± 0.002) cm<sup>–1</sup>. Using the powder spectral temperature dependence it was possible to evaluate the intradinuclear exchange coupling constan <i>J</i><sub>0</sub> as −101 ± 2 cm<sup>–1</sup>, which is considerably lower than that reported for other analogous copper­(II) tetraacetate paddle wheel compounds (Cu<sup>II</sup>–PW), showing the remarkable effect of the conformation of the terminal ligands on the magnetic interaction
