Tree Deletion Set has a Polynomial Kernel (but no OPT^O(1) approximation)
In the Tree Deletion Set problem the input is a graph G together with an
integer k. The objective is to determine whether there exists a set S of at
most k vertices such that G-S is a tree. The problem is NP-complete and even
NP-hard to approximate within any factor of OPT^c for any constant c. In this
paper we give a O(k^4) size kernel for the Tree Deletion Set problem. To the
best of our knowledge our result is the first counterexample to the
"conventional wisdom" that kernelization algorithms automatically provide
approximation algorithms with approximation ratio close to the size of the
kernel. An appealing feature of our kernelization algorithm is a new algebraic
reduction rule that we use to handle the instances on which Tree Deletion Set
is hard to approximate
Inductive parsimony and the Methodological Argument
a b s t r a c t Studies on so-called Change Blindness and Inattentional Blindness have been taken to establish the claim that conscious perception of a stimulus requires the attentional processing of that stimulus. One might contend, against this claim, that the evidence only shows attention to be necessary for the subject to have access to the contents of conscious perception and not for conscious perception itself. This ''Methodological Argument'' is gaining ground among philosophers who work on attention and consciousness, such as Christopher Mole. I find that, without the supporting evidence of inaccessible consciousness, this argument collapses into an indefensible form of inductive parsimony. The Methodological Argument is thus shown to be unsuccessful when used against the claim that attention is required for conscious perception, though I suggest that it may be successful against the more ambitious claim that attention is necessary for all conscious experience
The digital data processing concepts of the LOFT mission
The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT) is one of the five mission
candidates that were considered by ESA for an M3 mission (with a launch
opportunity in 2022 - 2024). LOFT features two instruments: the Large Area
Detector (LAD) and the Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a 10 m 2 -class
instrument with approximately 15 times the collecting area of the largest
timing mission so far (RXTE) for the first time combined with CCD-class
spectral resolution. The WFM will continuously monitor the sky and recognise
changes in source states, detect transient and bursting phenomena and will
allow the mission to respond to this. Observing the brightest X-ray sources
with the effective area of the LAD leads to enormous data rates that need to be
processed on several levels, filtered and compressed in real-time already on
board. The WFM data processing on the other hand puts rather low constraints on
the data rate but requires algorithms to find the photon interaction location
on the detector and then to deconvolve the detector image in order to obtain
the sky coordinates of observed transient sources. In the following, we want to
give an overview of the data handling concepts that were developed during the

Hyper-velocity impact test and simulation of a double-wall shield concept for the Wide Field Monitor aboard LOFT
The space mission LOFT (Large Observatory For X-ray Timing) was selected in
2011 by ESA as one of the candidates for the M3 launch opportunity. LOFT is
equipped with two instruments, the Large Area Detector (LAD) and the Wide Field
Monitor (WFM), based on Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs). In orbit, they would be
exposed to hyper-velocity impacts by environmental dust particles, which might
alter the surface properties of the SDDs. In order to assess the risk posed by
these events, we performed simulations in ESABASE2 and laboratory tests. Tests
on SDD prototypes aimed at verifying to what extent the structural damages
produced by impacts affect the SDD functionality have been performed at the Van
de Graaff dust accelerator at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics
(MPIK) in Heidelberg. For the WFM, where we expect a rate of risky impacts
notably higher than for the LAD, we designed, simulated and successfully tested
at the plasma accelerator at the Technical University in Munich (TUM) a
double-wall shielding configuration based on thin foils of Kapton and
Polypropylene. In this paper we summarize all the assessment, focussing on the

A 0535+26 in the August/September 2005 outburst observed by RXTE and INTEGRAL
In this Letter we present results from INTEGRAL and RXTE observations of the
spectral and timing behavior of the High Mass X-ray Binary A 0535+26 during its
August/September 2005 normal (type I) outburst with an average flux
F(5-100keV)~400mCrab. The search for cyclotron resonance scattering features
(fundamental and harmonic) is one major focus of the paper. Our analysis is
based on data from INTEGRAL and RXTE Target of Opportunity Observations
performed during the outburst. The pulse period is determined. X-ray pulse
profiles in different energy ranges are analyzed. The broad band INTEGRAL and
RXTE pulse phase averaged X-ray spectra are studied. The evolution of the
fundamental cyclotron line at different luminosities is analyzed. The pulse
period P is measured to be 103.39315(5)s at MJD 53614.5137. Two absorption
features are detected in the phase averaged spectra at E_1~45keV and
E_2~100keV. These can be interpreted as the fundamental cyclotron resonance
scattering feature and its first harmonic and therefore the magnetic field can

Simulations of the X-ray imaging capabilities of the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) for the LOFT Wide Field Monitor
The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the
four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will
revolutionize the study of compact objects in our galaxy and of the brightest
supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. The Large Area Detector
(LAD), carrying an unprecedented effective area of 10 m^2, is complemented by a
coded-mask Wide Field Monitor, in charge of monitoring a large fraction of the
sky potentially accessible to the LAD, to provide the history and context for
the sources observed by LAD and to trigger its observations on their most
interesting and extreme states. In this paper we present detailed simulations
of the imaging capabilities of the Silicon Drift Detectors developed for the
LOFT Wide Field Monitor detection plane. The simulations explore a large
parameter space for both the detector design and the environmental conditions,
allowing us to optimize the detector characteristics and demonstrating the

Peculiar outburst of A 0535+26 observed with INTEGRAL, RXTE and Suzaku
A normal outburst of the Be/X-ray binary system A0535+26 has taken place in
August 2009. It is the fourth in a series of normal outbursts that have occured
around the periastron passage of the source, but is unusual by starting at an
earlier orbital phase and by presenting a peculiar double-peaked light curve. A
first "flare" (lasting about 9 days from MJD 55043 on) reached a flux of 440
mCrab. The flux then decreased to less than 220 mCrab, and increased again
reaching 440 mCrab around the periastron at MJD 55057. Target of Opportunity
observations have been performed with INTEGRAL, RXTE and Suzaku. First results
of these observations are presented, with special emphasis on the cyclotron
lines present in the X-ray spectrum of the source, as well as in the pulse

Study of the many fluorescent lines and the absorption variability in GX 301-2 with XMM-Newton
We present an in-depth study of the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) GX 301-2
during its pre-periastron flare using data from the XMM-Newton satellite. The
energy spectrum shows a power law continuum absorbed by a large equivalent
hydrogen column on the order of 10^24 cm^2 and a prominent Fe K-alpha
fluorescent emission line. Besides the Fe K-alpha line, evidence for Fe K-beta,
Ni K-alpha, Ni K-beta, S K-alpha, Ar K-alpha, Ca K-alpha, and Cr K-alpha
fluorescent lines is found. The observed line strengths are consistent with
fluorescence in a cold absorber. This is the first time that a Cr K-alpha line
is seen in emission in the X-ray spectrum of a HMXB. In addition to the
modulation by the strong pulse period of ~685 sec the source is highly variable
and shows different states of activity. We perform time-resolved as well as
pulse-to-pulse resolved spectroscopy to investigate differences between these
states of activity. We find that the fluorescent line fluxes are strongly
variable and generally follow the overall flux. The N_H value is variable by a
factor of 2, but not correlated to the continuum normalization. We find an
interval of low flux in the light curve in which the pulsations cease almost
completely, without any indication of an increasing absorption column. We
investigate this dip in detail and argue that it is most likely that during the
dip the accretion ceased and the afterglow of the fluorescent iron accounted
for the main portion of the X-ray flux. A similar dip was found earlier in RXTE

The pre-outburst flare of the A 0535+26 August/September 2005 outburst
We study the spectral and temporal behavior of the High Mass X-ray Binary A
0535+26 during a `pre-outburst flare' which took place ~5 d before the peak of
a normal (type I) outburst in August/September 2005. We compare the studied
behavior with that observed during the outburst. We analyse RXTE observations
that monitored A 0535+26 during the outburst. We complete spectral and timing
analyses of the data. We study the evolution of the pulse period, present
energy-dependent pulse profiles both at the initial pre-outburst flare and
close to outburst maximum, and measure how the cyclotron resonance-scattering
feature (hereafter CRSF) evolves. We present three main results: a constant
period P=103.3960(5)s is measured until periastron passage, followed by a
spin-up with a decreasing period derivative of Pdot=(-1.69+/-0.04)x10^(-8)s/s
at MJD 53618, and P remains constant again at the end of the main outburst. The
spin-up provides evidence for the existence of an accretion disk during the
normal outburst. We measure a CRSF energy of Ecyc~50kev during the pre-outburst
flare, and Ecyc~46kev during the main outburst. The pulse shape, which varies
significantly during both pre-outburst flare and main outburst, evolves
