Poisson structure and symmetry in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity
In the formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity as a Chern-Simons gauge theory, the phase space is the moduli space of flat Poincar\'e group connections. Using the combinatorial approach developed by Fock and Rosly, we give an explicit description of the phase space and its Poisson structure for the general case of a genus g oriented surface with punctures representing particles and a boundary playing the role of spatial infinity. We give a physical interpretation and explain how the degrees of freedom associated with each handle and each particle can be decoupled. The symmetry group of the theory combines an action of the mapping class group with asymptotic Poincar\'e transformations in a non-trivial fashion. We derive the conserved quantities associated to the latter and show that the mapping class group of the surface acts on the phase space via Poisson isomorphisms

A Chern-Simons approach to Galilean quantum gravity in 2+1 dimensions
We define and discuss classical and quantum gravity in 2+1 dimensions in the
Galilean limit. Although there are no Newtonian forces between massive objects
in (2+1)-dimensional gravity, the Galilean limit is not trivial. Depending on
the topology of spacetime there are typically finitely many topological degrees
of freedom as well as topological interactions of Aharonov-Bohm type between
massive objects. In order to capture these topological aspects we consider a
two-fold central extension of the Galilei group whose Lie algebra possesses an
invariant and non-degenerate inner product. Using this inner product we define
Galilean gravity as a Chern-Simons theory of the doubly-extended Galilei group.
The particular extension of the Galilei group we consider is the classical
double of a much studied group, the extended homogeneous Galilei group, which
is also often called Nappi-Witten group. We exhibit the Poisson-Lie structure
of the doubly extended Galilei group, and quantise the Chern-Simons theory
using a Hamiltonian approach. Many aspects of the quantum theory are determined
by the quantum double of the extended homogenous Galilei group, or Galilei
double for short. We study the representation theory of the Galilei double,
explain how associated braid group representations account for the topological
interactions in the theory, and briefly comment on an associated
non-commutative Galilean spacetime.Comment: 38 pages, 1 figure, references update

Vitrification and determination of the crystallization time scales of the bulk-metallic-glass-forming liquid Zr58.5Nb2.8Cu15.6Ni12.8Al10.3
The crystallization kinetics of Zr58.5Nb2.8Cu15.6Ni12.8Al10.3 were studied in an electrostatic levitation (ESL) apparatus. The measured critical cooling rate is 1.75 K/s. Zr58.5Nb2.8Cu15.6Ni12.8Al10.3 is the first bulk-metallic-glass-forming liquid that does not contain beryllium to be vitrified by purely radiative cooling in the ESL. Furthermore, the sluggish crystallization kinetics enable the determination of the time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram between the liquidus and the glass transition temperatures. The shortest time to reach crystallization in an isothermal experiment; i.e., the nose of the TTT diagram is 32 s. The nose of the TTT diagram is at 900 K and positioned about 200 K below the liquidus temperature

The Quest for Light Sea Quarks: Algorithms for the Future
As part of a systematic algorithm study, we present first results on a
performance comparison between a multibosonic algorithm and the hybrid Monte
