    Enabling adaptive scientific workflows via trigger detection

    Next generation architectures necessitate a shift away from traditional workflows in which the simulation state is saved at prescribed frequencies for post-processing analysis. While the need to shift to in~situ workflows has been acknowledged for some time, much of the current research is focused on static workflows, where the analysis that would have been done as a post-process is performed concurrently with the simulation at user-prescribed frequencies. Recently, research efforts are striving to enable adaptive workflows, in which the frequency, composition, and execution of computational and data manipulation steps dynamically depend on the state of the simulation. Adapting the workflow to the state of simulation in such a data-driven fashion puts extremely strict efficiency requirements on the analysis capabilities that are used to identify the transitions in the workflow. In this paper we build upon earlier work on trigger detection using sublinear techniques to drive adaptive workflows. Here we propose a methodology to detect the time when sudden heat release occurs in simulations of turbulent combustion. Our proposed method provides an alternative metric that can be used along with our former metric to increase the robustness of trigger detection. We show the effectiveness of our metric empirically for predicting heat release for two use cases.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1506.0825

    Multi-band Superconductivity in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8

    Sub-Kelvin scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in the Chevrel Phases SnMo6S8 and PbMo6S8 reveals two distinct superconducting gaps with Delta_1 = 3 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.0 meV and Delta_1 = 3.1 meV, Delta_2 ~ 1.4 meV respectively. The gap distribution is strongly anisotropic, with Delta_2 predominantly seen when scanning across unit-cell steps on the (001) sample surface. The spectra are well-fitted by an anisotropic two-band BCS s-wave gap function. Our spectroscopic data are confirmed by electronic heat capacity measurements which also provide evidence for a twin-gap scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate Ligament: a case report

    We report a case of mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Mucoid degeneration of the ACL is a very rare cause of knee pain. There have been only some reported cases of mucoid degeneration of the ACL in the English literature. We reviewed previous reports and summarized clinical features and symptoms, including those found in our case. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the most useful tool for differentiating mucoid degeneration of the ACL from an intraligamentous ganglion or other lesions in the knee joint. If this disease is considered preoperatively, it can be diagnosed easily based on characteristic findings.Key words: Anterior cruciate ligament, arthroscopy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, mucoid degeneratio

    Patient-Provider Discussions about Lung Cancer Screening Pre- and Post-Guidelines: Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)

    Objective In 2013, the USPSTF issued a Grade B recommendation that long-term current and former smokers receive lung cancer screening. Shared decision-making is important for individuals considering screening, and patient-provider discussions an essential component of the process. We examined prevalence and predictors of lung cancer screening discussions pre- and post-USPSTF guidelines. Methods Data were obtained from two cycles of the Health Information National Trends Survey (2012; 2014). The analyzed sample comprised screening-eligible current and former smokers with no personal history of lung cancer (n = 746 in 2012; n = 795 in 2014). Descriptive and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted; patient-reported discussion about lung cancer screening with provider was the outcome of interest. Results Contrary to expectations, patient-provider discussions about lung cancer screening were more prevalent pre-guideline, but overall patient-provider discussions were low in both years (17% in 2012; 10% in 2014). Current smokers were more likely to have had a discussion than former smokers. Significant predictors of patient-provider discussions included family history of cancer and having healthcare coverage. Conclusions The prevalence of patient-provider discussions about lung cancer screening is suboptimal. Practice implications There is a critical need for patient and provider education about shared decision-making and its importance in cancer screening decisions

    Project Reach was established to deliver evidence-based mental healthcare services to children and adults affected by Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Through Project Reach, an innovative multi-component assessment and treatment service is utilized to identify and treat in integrated healthcare settings both children and adults exhibiting significant behavioral health concerns in Houston. The aim is to provide sustainable, integrated mental health services through primary care and school-based settings to post-Harvey affected individuals whose emotional needs remain unmet. This paper describes the design and implementation of Project Reach as well as special considerations for implementation. The overall goal of Project Reach is to form a platform for expanding integrated services for those affected by Harvey that will maximize behavioral health outcomes while reducing cost and improving access
