Corporate reputation and organisational performance: an Australian study
PURPOSE - To test for a relationship between corporate reputation and financial performance, using Australian data. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH - Econometric modelling. FINDINGS - No causal relationship between corporate reputation and financial performance (in either direction) was found. This is contrary to some findings in other countries. Reputation may not have a significant impact on performance in Australia. There may be weaknesses in the existing measure of reputation, or the finding may be due to unobserved variability in the intervening variable of managerial exploitation of the reputation. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS - The findings may be specific to Australia. In Australia, the linkage between reputation and performance may be too small to be significant in the available sample. It is argued that in corporate practice the link between reputation and performance proceeds via strategy and competitive advantage. Having a reputation resource is not enough; it needs to be managed well and exploited if it is to yield financial results. More work is needed to establish reliable measures of reputation. Impact of material deterioration on the strength of reinforced concrete half-joint structures
During the 1960’s and 1970’s a number of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges were constructed with ‘half-joints’ introduced into bridge decks. A half-joint is a particular type of RC structure that was introduced into bridge decks as a means of simplifying the design and construction operations. However, a major disadvantage is that there are problems associated with leakage of water through the joint leading to concrete deterioration and corrosion of the reinforcement. When assessing the integrity of existing half-joint structures, determining the influence of material deterioration and/or repair works is a challenge as current code provisions or guidelines do not provide guidance on how to take any associated strength losses into consideration. This paper focusses on the impact of changes in the material properties (such as compressive strength, yield strength of the reinforcement, reinforcement bar diameter, etc.) on the load bearing capacity of reinforced half-joint structures. The vulnerability of a typical half-joint design to these changes is analysed using finite element models. The results allow designers, assessors and decision makers to better quantify the impact of observed deterioration phenomena on the predicted strength of the studied half-joint.This is the author accepted manuscript. Framework for better living with HIV in England

Sigma Research was funded by Terrence Higgins Trust to co-ordinate the development of a framework to address the health, social care, support and information needs of people with diagnosed HIV in England. It has now been published as the Framework for better living with HIV in England.
The over-arching goal of the framework is that all people with diagnosed HIV in England "are enabled to have the maximum level of health, well-being, quality of life and social integration". In its explanation of how this should occur the document presents a road map for social care, support and information provision to people with diagnosed HIV in England. By establishing and communicating aims and objectives, the framework should build consensus and provide a means to establish how interventions could be prioritised and coordinated. The key drivers for the framework were clearly articulated ethical principles, agreed by all those who sign up to it, and an inclusive social development / health promotion approach.
Sigma Research worked on the framework with a range of other organisations who sent representatives to a Framework Development Group (see below for membership). The framework is evidence-based and seeks to:
Promote and protect the rights and well-being of all people with HIV in England.
Maximise the capacity of individuals and groups of people with HIV to care for, advocate and represent themselves effectively.
Improve and protect access to appropriate information, social support, social care and clinical services.
Minimise social, economic, governmental and judicial change detrimental to the health and well being of people with HIV.
Alongside the development of the framework, Sigma Research undertook a national needs assessment among people with diagnosed HIV across the UK called What do you need?. These two projects informed and supported each other.

An analytical model for the detection of levitated nanoparticles in optomechanics
Interferometric position detection of levitated particles is crucial for the
centre-of-mass (CM) motion cooling and manipulation of levitated particles. In
combination with balanced detection and feedback cooling, this system has
provided picometer scale position sensitivity, zeptonewton force detection, and
sub-millikelvin CM temperatures. In this article, we develop an analytical
model of this detection system and compare its performance with experimental
results allowing us to explain the presence of spurious frequencies in the
spectra
Present-day stress orientations and tectonic provinces of the NW Borneo collisional margin
Extent: 15p.Borehole failure observed on image and dipmeter logs from 55 petroleum wells across the NW Borneo collisional margin were used to determine maximum horizontal stress (σH) orientations; combined with seismic and outcrop data, they define seven tectonic provinces. The Baram Delta–Deepwater Fold-Thrust Belt exhibits three tectonic provinces: its inner shelf inverted province (σH is NW-SE, margin-normal), its outer shelf extension province (σH is NE-SW, margin-parallel), and its slope to basin floor compression province (σH is NW-SE, margin-normal). In the inverted province, σH reflects inversion of deltaic normal faults. The σH orientations in the extension and compression provinces reflect deltaic gravitational tectonics. The shale and minibasin provinces have been recognized in offshore Sabah. In the shale province, σH is N010°E, which aligns around the boundary of a massif of mobile shale. Currently, no data are available to determine σH in the minibasin province. In the Balingian province, σH is ESE-WNW, reflecting ESE absolute Sunda plate motions due to the absence of a thick detachment seen elsewhere in NW Borneo. The Central Luconia province demonstrates poorly constrained and variable σH orientations. These seven provinces result from the heterogeneous structural and stratigraphic development of the NW Borneo margin and formed due to complex collisional tectonics and the varied distribution and thicknesses of stratigraphic packages.Rosalind C. The Brown-dwarf Atmosphere Monitoring (BAM) Project II: Multi-epoch monitoring of extremely cool brown dwarfs
With the discovery of Y dwarfs by the WISE mission, the population of field
brown dwarfs now extends to objects with temperatures comparable to those of
Solar System planets. To investigate the atmospheres of these newly identified
brown dwarfs, we have conducted a pilot study monitoring an initial sample of
three late T-dwarfs (T6.5, T8 and T8.5) and one Y-dwarf (Y0) for infrared
photometric variability at multiple epochs. With J-band imaging, each target
was observed for a period of 1.0h to 4.5h per epoch, which covers a significant
fraction of the expected rotational period. These measurements represent the
first photometric monitoring for these targets. For three of the four targets
(2M1047, Ross 458C and WISE0458), multi-epoch monitoring was performed, with
the time span between epochs ranging from a few hours to ~2 years. During the
first epoch, the T8.5 target WISE0458 exhibited variations with a remarkable
min-to-max amplitude of 13%, while the second epoch light curve taken ~2 years
later did not note any variability to a 3% upper limit. With an effective
temperature of ~600 K, WISE0458 is the coldest variable brown dwarf published
to-date, and combined with its high and variable amplitude makes it a
fascinating target for detailed follow-up. The three remaining targets showed
no significant variations, with a photometric precision between 0.8% and 20.0%,
depending on the target brightness. Combining the new results with previous
multi-epoch observations of brown dwarfs with spectral types of T5 or later,
the currently identified variables have locations on the colour-colour diagram
better matched by theoretical models incorporating cloud opacities rather than
cloud-free atmospheres. This preliminary result requires further study to
determine if there is a definitive link between variability among late-T dwarfs

An L Band Spectrum of the Coldest Brown Dwarf
The coldest brown dwarf, WISE 0855, is the closest known planetary-mass,
free-floating object and has a temperature nearly as cold as the solar system
gas giants. Like Jupiter, it is predicted to have an atmosphere rich in
methane, water, and ammonia, with clouds of volatile ices. WISE 0855 is faint
at near-infrared wavelengths and emits almost all its energy in the
mid-infrared. Skemer et al. 2016 presented a spectrum of WISE 0855 from 4.5-5.1
micron (M band), revealing water vapor features. Here, we present a spectrum of
WISE 0855 in L band, from 3.4-4.14 micron. We present a set of atmosphere
models that include a range of compositions (metallicities and C/O ratios) and
water ice clouds. Methane absorption is clearly present in the spectrum. The
mid-infrared color can be better matched with a methane abundance that is
depleted relative to solar abundance. We find that there is evidence for water
ice clouds in the M band spectrum, and we find a lack of phosphine spectral
features in both the L and M band spectra. We suggest that a deep continuum
opacity source may be obscuring the near-infrared flux, possibly a deep
phosphorous-bearing cloud, ammonium dihyrogen phosphate. Observations of WISE
0855 provide critical constraints for cold planetary atmospheres, bridging the
temperature range between the long-studied solar system planets and accessible
exoplanets. JWST will soon revolutionize our understanding of cold brown dwarfs
with high-precision spectroscopy across the infrared, allowing us to study
their compositions and cloud properties, and to infer their atmospheric

Developmental contexts and features of elite academy football players: Coach and player perspectives
Player profiling can reap many benefits; through reflective coach-athlete dialogue that produces a profile the athlete has a raised awareness of their own development, while the coach has an opportunity to understand the athlete's viewpoint. In this study, we explored how coaches and players perceived the development features of an elite academy footballer and the contexts in which these features are revealed, in order to develop a player profile to be used for mentoring players. Using a Delphi polling technique, coaches and players experienced a number of 'rounds' of expressing their opinions regarding player development contexts and features, ultimately reduced into a consensus. Players and coaches had differing priorities on the key contexts of player development. These contexts, when they reflect the consensus between players and coaches were heavily dominated by ability within the game and training. Personal, social, school, and lifestyle contexts featured less prominently. Although 'discipline' was frequently mentioned as an important player development feature, coaches and players disagreed on the importance of 'training'
Interactive effects of low molecular weight carbon compounds on N2O emissions
Low molecular weight carbon (C) compounds in hotspots such as the rhizosphere can greatly affect nitrate reduction processes. Towards a better prediction of N2O emission from denitrification, we are still lacking understanding of responses to the supply of complex C compound mixtures such as rhizodeposits versus the often examined response to individually amended C compounds. In a laboratory study, we applied three C compounds, glucose, citric acid and glutamic acid, individually or as a three-compound mixture to 14NH415NO3 amended soil at 80% water-filled pore space. For the individual C compound treatments, the substrateswere enriched in 13C-C. The mixture was enriched in 13C-C either in all constituent compounds or in one of the compounds only, resulting in four different treatments. This set-up enabled quantification of the utilization of each compound for heterotrophic respiration when applied individually and in combination, and for this to be related to the dynamics of 15N-NO3- reduction to 15N-N2O. The total 15N-N2O emission from the compound mixture over 10 days was similar to the total emission predicted from the average of the individual compound treatments This could suggest potential predictability of denitrification responses to complex mixtures of C based on knowledge of its constituents. However, immediate and simultaneous peaks of 15N-N2O and 13C-CO2 fluxes from the compound mixture contrasted with observed delays in 15N-N2O and 13C-CO2 fluxes when the compounds had been applied individually. Moreover, relative contributions of the C compounds to 13C-CO2 respiration from the compound mixture were different from the predicted contributions based on their individual application. While contributions of glutamic acid-C and citric acid-C to respiration in mixture during peak 15N-N2O emission were increased, glucose utilization in the mixture treatment was significantly lower. These findings give a glimpse of the challenges we are facing when trying to predict nitrate reduction occurring in the rhizosphere where interactions between C compounds and the soil matrix, as well as within the wider heterotrophic community, determine process rates. Given that most of our understanding of the role of C in regulating nitrate reduction, is informed from single compound studies, we require more evidence on the effects and innate interactions of compound mixtures to be able to predict responses to C sources
