The interaction between transpolar arcs and cusp spots
Transpolar arcs and cusp spots are both auroral phenomena which occur when
the interplanetary magnetic field is northward. Transpolar arcs are associated
with magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail, which closes magnetic flux and
results in a "wedge" of closed flux which remains trapped, embedded in the
magnetotail lobe. The cusp spot is an indicator of lobe reconnection at the
high-latitude magnetopause; in its simplest case, lobe reconnection
redistributes open flux without resulting in any net change in the open flux
content of the magnetosphere. We present observations of the two phenomena
interacting--i.e., a transpolar arc intersecting a cusp spot during part of its
lifetime. The significance of this observation is that lobe reconnection can
have the effect of opening closed magnetotail flux. We argue that such events
should not be rare
Structural Characterization of Two CO Molecules Bound to the Nitrogenase Active Site
As an approach towards unraveling the nitrogenase mechanism, we have studied the binding of CO to the active site FeMo‐cofactor. CO is not only an inhibitor of nitrogenase, but it is also a substrate, undergoing reduction to hydrocarbons (Fischer‐Tropsch‐type chemistry). The C‐C bond forming capabilities of nitrogenase suggest that multiple CO, or CO‐derived ligands, bind to the active site. Herein, we report a crystal structure with two CO ligands coordinated to the FeMo‐cofactor of the molybdenum nitrogenase at 1.33 Å resolution. In addition to the previously observed bridging CO ligand between Fe2 and Fe6 of the FeMo‐cofactor, a new ligand binding mode is revealed through a second CO ligand coordinated terminally to Fe6. While the relevance of this state to nitrogenase‐catalyzed reactions remains to be established, it highlights the privileged role for Fe2 and Fe6 in ligand binding, with multiple coordination modes available depending on the ligand and reaction conditions
Polar cap arcs from the magnetosphere to the ionosphere: kinetic modelling and observations by Cluster and TIMED
On 1 April 2004 the GUVI imager onboard the TIMED spacecraft spots an
isolated and elongated polar cap arc. About 20 min later, the Cluster
satellites detect an isolated upflowing ion beam above the polar cap.
Cluster observations show that the ions are accelerated upward by a
quasi-stationary electric field. The field-aligned potential drop is
estimated to about 700 V and the upflowing ions are accompanied by a tenuous
population of isotropic protons with a temperature of about 500 eV.

The magnetic footpoints of the ion outflows observed by Cluster are situated
in the prolongation of the polar cap arc observed by TIMED GUVI. The
upflowing ion beam and the polar cap arc may be different signatures of the
same phenomenon, as suggested by a recent statistical study of polar cap ion
beams using Cluster data.

We use Cluster observations at high altitude as input to a quasi-stationary
magnetosphere-ionosphere (MI) coupling model. Using a Knight-type
current-voltage relationship and the current continuity at the topside
ionosphere, the model computes the energy spectrum of precipitating
electrons at the top of the ionosphere corresponding to the generator
electric field observed by Cluster. The MI coupling model provides a
field-aligned potential drop in agreement with Cluster observations of
upflowing ions and a spatial scale of the polar cap arc consistent with the
optical observations by TIMED. The computed energy spectrum of the
precipitating electrons is used as input to the Trans4 ionospheric transport
code. This 1-D model, based on Boltzmann's kinetic formalism, takes into
account ionospheric processes such as photoionization and electron/proton
precipitation, and computes the optical and UV emissions due to
precipitating electrons. The emission rates provided by the Trans4 code are
compared to the optical observations by TIMED. They are similar in size and
intensity. Data and modelling results are consistent with the scenario of
quasi-static acceleration of electrons that generate a polar cap arc as they
precipitate in the ionosphere. The detailed observations of the acceleration
region by Cluster and the large scale image of the polar cap arc provided by
TIMED are two different features of the same phenomenon. Combined together,
they bring new light on the configuration of the high-latitude magnetosphere
during prolonged periods of Northward IMF. Possible implications of the
modelling results for optical observations of polar cap arcs are also
discussed

Background and Aims: An HCV cure is now possible in a large proportion of HIV-HCV patient. We present real life results of a compassionate use program promoted by SIMIT (Infectious and Tropical Diseases Italian Society) of Dasabuvir and Ombitasvir/Paritaprevir/Ritonavir ± Ribavirin for 12 weeks in 213 HIV-HCV genotype 1 patients. Data on efficacy and tolerability of this strategy in HIV patients have been reported until now only in 43 non cirrhotic HIV subjects
Evaluating LoRaWAN connectivity in a marine scenario
The growing need for interoperability among the different oceanic monitoring systems to deliver services able to answer the requirements of stakeholders and end-users led to the development of a low-cost machine-to-machine communication system able to guarantee data reliability over marine paths. In this framework, an experimental evaluation of the performance of long-range (LoRa) technology in a fully operational marine scenario has been proposed. In-situ tests were carried out exploiting the availability of (i) a passenger vessel and (ii) a research vessel operating in the Ligurian basin (North-Western Mediterranean Sea) both hosting end-nodes, and (iii) gateways positioned on mountains and hills in the inland areas. Packet loss ratio, packet reception rate, received signal strength indicator, signal to noise, and expected signal power ratio were chosen as metrics in line of sight and not the line of sight conditions. The reliability of Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) transmission over the sea has been demonstrated up to more than 110 km in a free space scenario and for more than 20 km in a coastal urban environment
Treatment Interruption and Variation in Tablet Taking Behaviour Result in Viral Failure: A Case-Control Study from Cape Town, South Africa
BACKGROUND: Understanding of the impact of non-structured treatment interruption (TI) and variation in tablet-taking on failure of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) is limited in a resource-poor setting. METHODS: A retrospective matched case-control analysis. Individuals failing ART were matched by time on ART with 4 controls. Viral load (VL) and CD4 count were completed 4-monthly. Adherence percentages, from tablet returns, were calculated 4-monthly (interval) and from ART start (cumulative). Variation between intervals and TI (>27 days off ART) were recorded. Conditional multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the effect of cumulative adherence 10% and TI on virological failure. Age, gender, baseline log VL and CD4 were included as possible confounders in the multivariate model. RESULTS: 244 patients (44 cases, 200 controls) were included. Median age was 32 years (IQR28-37), baseline CD4 108 cells/mm3 (IQR56-151), VL 4.82 log (IQR4.48-5.23). 94% (96% controls, 86% failures) had cumulative adherence >90%. The odds of failure increased 3 times (aOR 3.01, 95%CI 0.81-11.21) in individuals with cumulative adherence 10% and 4.01 times (aOR 4.01, 95%CI 1.45-11.10) in individuals with TIs. For individuals with TI and cumulative adherence >95%, the odds of failing were 5.65 (CI 1.40-22.85). CONCLUSION: It is well known that poor cumulative adherence increases risk of virological failure, but less well understood that TI and variations in tablet-taking also play a key role, despite otherwise excellent adherence
Impact of antiretroviral dosing and daily pill burden on viral rebound rates in naive patients receiving a tenofovir-based regimen
Methods A total of 480 ART-naive patients were selected from the GNOMO cohort. Incidence rate of viral rebound (VR = first of two consecutive VL>50 cp/ml) was calculated as number of events over PYFU and expressed at univariate and multivariate analysis as incidence rate ratio (IRR). Number of both pills and doses per day were used to define three different types of regimens: twice-a-day regimens (BID regimens); once-a-day regimens with 3 pills (high-pill QD [hp-QD]). Adjusted rates of viral rebound were estimated by Poisson regression using date of first HIV-RNA <50 c/ml as baseline. Follow-up was censored at the date of VR, death, or loss to follow-up
