    Treating Chronic Wounds Using Photoactive Metabolites: Data Mining the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for Potential Lead Species (#)

    Efficient wound treatment that addresses associated infections and inflammation remains one of the big unmet needs, especially in low- and middle-income countries. One strategy for securing better healthcare can be using medicinal plants if sufficient evidence on their safety and therapeutic benefits can be ascertained. A unique novel opportunity could be photo-enhanced wound treatment with a combination of light-sensitive plant preparations and local exposure to daylight. Data mining strategies using existing resources offer an excellent basis for developing such an approach with many potential plant candidates. In the present analysis, we researched the 535 botanical drugs included in the Chinese pharmacopeia and identified 183 medicinal plant species, 82 for treating open wounds caused by trauma and 101 for inflammatory skin conditions. After further screening for reports on the presence of known photoactive compounds, we determined a core group of 10 scientifically lesser-known botanical species that may potentially be developed into more widely used topical preparations for photodynamic treatment of infected wounds. Our predictive approach may contribute to developing a more evidence-based use of herbal medicines

    Magnetic Field Modulation of Recombination Processes in Organic Photovoltaics

    Polymer:fullerene photovoltaics have potential in small-scale power production but low open-circuit voltages limit their efficiency. Understanding the processes affecting the charge recombination rate is key to increasing device efficiency through optimizing open-circuit voltage. Most polymer-fullerene systems have an intramolecular triplet exciton state lower in energy than the interfacial charge-transfer state, and its formation can provide a terminal recombination pathway that may limit device performance. We used magnetic fields to modulate intersystem crossing in a prototypical system, and monitored the effect on the open-circuit voltage to infer changes in the steady-state carrier density and hence in the net recombination rate constant. We analyzed these effects using density-matrix modeling, and quantified the various recombination rate constants for a working device

    General Practice Nurse (GPN) practice is becoming increasingly diverse, due to a changing patient base and political climate which impacts upon their role. Over the last decade there has been an increase in the number of foreign born individuals living in the UK, the number of individuals identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBQT) as well as the number of people living with a long term health condition or disability. Yet all of these groups also experience greater health inequalities, despite increasing political drives in the UK and internationally to address this. General Practice Nurses are ideally placed to address health inequalities by facilitating health access for diverse groups however in order to do this they have to recognise and respond to the cultural values of the patient they are working with

    Domestication Study of Senecio nutans Sch.Bip. (Asteraceae): its Economic Potential and Sustainable Management

    Introduction: Chachacoma, Senecio nutans is a traditional herbal remedy used in Chile for the treatment of altitude sickness. As found with other plants that may affect oxygen uptake and distribution, e.g. Rhodiola rosea, it has acquired a reputation for use as a sports supplement and has been used in Chilean health products as a value adding ingredient. It mainly grows in the wild above 3,000 meters and has been collected by the Aymara minority group as a cash crop. Local research group CIDE has been involved in establishing and evidence base for its use and characterizing and optimizing the main ingredient, acetophenone, through tissue culture cultivation. Methods: We analysed samples of Chachacoma cultivated and collected at different altitudes by NMR spectroscopy and HPTLC to assess the levels of acetophenone and establish fingerprints for the other metabolites extracted. Results: acetophenone content appears to vary at different altitudes and growing conditions and the best collected samples grew above 4000 meters at Chungara lake, however samples produced by tissue culture had similar levels of acetophenone and other metabolites to the lake collected samples. Conclusions: Tissue culture cultivation may be a way to expand and develop the Chachacoma industry for the benefit of the Aymara and other minority groups living in the high Andies

    Thomas-Fermi approach to resonant tunneling in delta-doped diodes

    We study resonant tunneling in B-δ\delta-doped diodes grown by Si-molecular beam epitaxy. A Thomas-Fermi approach is used to obtain the conduction-band modulation. Using a scalar Hamiltonian within the effective-mass approximation we demonstrate that the occurrence of negative differential resistance (NDR) only involves conduction-band states, whereas interband tunneling effects seem to be negligible. Our theoretical results are in very good agreement with recent experimental observations of NDR in this type of diodes.Comment: 6 pages, REVTeX 3.0, 5 figures available from [email protected]

    Are Flexible Work Arrangements Associated with Lower Levels of Chronic Stress-Related Biomarkers? A Study of 6025 Employees in the UK Household Longitudinal Study

    Debates around the benefits of flexible work arrangements for employee well-being are limited by a lack of empirical analyses on whether flexible working enables employees with work or family stressors to cope with their levels of stress. This study examines whether the availability and use of different flexible work arrangements are associated with lower allostatic load (an index of chronic stress-related biomarkers) in a large representative study of UK adults. Male and female employees who made use of reduced hours working arrangements had lower levels of allostatic load. Among women caring for two or more children aged under 15, there was a difference of almost one unit of the allostatic load index (an additional biomarker risk) between women who used reduced hours flexible work and those without such arrangements. Reduced hours flexible work arrangements could enable women who combine work and family roles to reduce their levels of chronic stress

    An agenda for creative practice in the new mobilities paradigm

    Creative practices have made a standing contribution to mobilities research. We write this article as a collective of 25 scholars and practitioners to make a provocation: to further position creative mobilities research as a fundamental contribution and component in this field. The article explores how creative forms of research—whether in the form of artworks, exhibitions, performances, collaborations, and more—has been a foundational part of shaping the new mobilities paradigm, and continues to influence its methodological, epistemological, and ontological concerns. We tour through the interwoven history of art and mobilities research, outlining five central contributions that creativity brings. Through short vignettes of each author’s creative practice, we discuss how creativity has been key to the evolution and emergence of how mobilities research has expanded to global audiences of scholars, practitioners, and communities. The article concludes by highlighting the potency of the arts for lively and transdisciplinary pathways for future mobilities research in the uncertainties that lay ahead
