Dual output variable pitch turbofan actuation system
An improved actuating mechanism was provided for a gas turbine engine incorporating fan blades of the variable pitch variety, the actuator adapted to rotate the individual fan blades within apertures in an associated fan disc. The actuator included means such as a pair of synchronizing ring gears, one on each side of the blade shanks, and adapted to engage pinions disposed thereon. Means were provided to impart rotation to the ring gears in opposite directions to effect rotation of the blade shanks in response to a predetermined input signal. In the event of system failure, a run-away actuator was prevented by an improved braking device which arrests the mechanism
Comparison of theoretical predicted longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics with full-scale wind tunnel data on the ATLIT airplane
An analytical method is presented for predicting the lift coefficient, the pitching moment coefficient, and the drag coefficient of light, twin-engine, propeller-driven airplanes. The method was applied to the Advanced Technology Light Twin-Engine airplane. The calculated characteristics were then correlated against full scale wind tunnel data. The analytical method was found to predict the drag and pitching moment fairly well. However, the lift prediction was extremely poor
Exploring the Social Impacts of a Summer Camp for Youth With Tourette Syndrome
Although a wealth of research exists documenting the positive social outcomes promoted by summer camps, research specifically examining youths with Tourette Syndrome (TS) within the camp context is lacking. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to explore the social impacts of a weeklong camp specifically for youths with TS, involving focus groups with 18 campers aged 10–16, interviews with 10 staff members, and participant observations compiled by the researcher. Multiple themes and sub-themes concerning the social impacts of the camp experience were identified, including (a) relatedness (not alone and self-assurance); (b) social development (friendships, optimism, educational experience, and bullying); (c) programmatic outcomes (unique program opportunities and cabin bonding); and (d) various implications for professional practice and future research are discussed

Implementation Techniques for Efficient Data-Flow Analysis of Large Programs
Many software engineering tools such as program slicers must perform
data-flow analysis in order to extract necessary information from the program
source. These tools typically borrow much of their implementation from
optimizing compilers. However, since these tools are expected to analyze
programs in their entirety, rather than functions in isolation, the time and
space performance of the data-flow analyses are of major concern. We present
techniques that reduce the time and space required to perform data-flow
analysis of large programs. We have used these techniques to implement an
efficient program slicing tool for C programs and have computed slices of

EVA Equipment for Satellite Service
Requirements are projected for performing orbital satellite service. Emphasis is on defining the role of Extravehicular Activity (EVA) required to support this future space activity. Specific EVA service techniques and equipment are concepted, building on initial baseline service capability supported by the Shuttle Orbiter, Remote Manipulator System, Extravehicular Mobility Unit, and Manned Maneuvering Unit. New EVA concepts discussed are compatible with current and near-term satellites, projected evolution of the Space Transportation System, and anticipated future space construction requirements
