    Laboratory modeling and analysis of aircraft-lightning interactions

    Modeling studies of the interaction of a delta wing aircraft with direct lightning strikes were carried out using an approximate scale model of an F-106B. The model, which is three feet in length, is subjected to direct injection of fast current pulses supplied by wires, which simulate the lightning channel and are attached at various locations on the model. Measurements are made of the resulting transient electromagnetic fields using time derivative sensors. The sensor outputs are sampled and digitized by computer. The noise level is reduced by averaging the sensor output from ten input pulses at each sample time. Computer analysis of the measured fields includes Fourier transformation and the computation of transfer functions for the model. Prony analysis is also used to determine the natural frequencies of the model. Comparisons of model natural frequencies extracted by Prony analysis with those for in flight direct strike data usually show lower damping in the in flight case. This is indicative of either a lightning channel with a higher impedance than the wires on the model, only one attachment point, or short streamers instead of a long channel

    A method for measuring in-plane displacement of a rotating structure by using two laser speckle photographs is described. From the displacement measurements one can calculate strains and stresses due to a centrifugal load. This technique involves making separate speckle photographs of a test model. One photograph is made with the model loaded (model is rotating); the second photograph is made with no load on the model (model is stationary). A sandwich is constructed from the two speckle photographs and data are recovered in a manner similar to that used with conventional speckle photography. The basic theory, experimental procedures of this method, and data analysis of a simple rotating specimen are described. In addition the measurement of in-plane surface displacement components of a deformed solid, and the application of the coupled laser speckle interferometry and boundary-integral solution technique to two dimensional elasticity problems are addressed

    Reddenings of FGK supergiants and classical Cepheids from spectroscopic data

    Accurate and homogeneous atmospheric parameters (Teff, log (g), Vt, [Fe/H]) are derived for 74 FGK non-variable supergiants from high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio, echelle spectra. Extremely high precision for the inferred effective temperatures (10-40 K) is achieved by using the line-depth ratio method. The new data are combined with atmospheric values for 164 classical Cepheids, observed at 675 different pulsation phases, taken from our previously published studies. The derived values are correlated with unreddened B-V colours compiled from the literature for the investigated stars in order to obtain an empirical relationship of the form: (B-V)o = 57.984 - 10.3587(log Teff)^2 + 1.67572(log Teff)^3 - 3.356(log (g)) + 0.0321(Vt) + 0.2615[Fe/H] + 0.8833((log (g))(log Teff)). The expression is used to estimate colour excesses E(B-V) for individual supergiants and classical Cepheids, with a precision of +-0.05 mag. for supergiants and Cepheids with n=1-2 spectra, reaching +-0.025 mag. for Cepheids with n>2 spectra, matching uncertainties for the most sophisticated photometric techniques. The reddening scale is also a close match to the system of space reddenings for Cepheids.     Demonstration of Physiological Barrier Between Pulpal Odontoblasts and its Perturbation Following Routine Restorative Procedures: A Horseradish Peroxidase Tracing Study in the Rat

    Vascular injection of the macromolecular tracer, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was used to study the permeability of the odontoblast cell layer in developing and mature rat molar teeth, and to investigate the effect of cavity preparations on the permeability of this epithelioid cell layer in adult animals. HRP injected into the vascular system of normal animals 28 days of age and older was localized histochemically (from 5 to 90 min after injection) throughout the extracellular spaces of the maxillary dental pulps; however, the tracer did not penetrate beyond the tight junctions at the apical region of the odontoblast cell layer, and was absent from the predentin and dentin. In contrast, HRP injected into very young neonatal animals (e.g., day 3) resulted in free passage of HRP between odontoblasts and into the overlying predentin and dentin. When Class V cavities had been prepared in adult maxillary molars after HRP was injected into the blood stream, HRP reaction product penetrated the predentin and dentin immediately beneath the cavity preparation; however, adjacent, un-traumatized areas of predentin and dentin in the operated teeth were devoid of reaction product. These results provide evidence that: (1) a physiological barrier develops between the distal segments of odontoblast cell bodies in normal rat molar teeth between days 15 and 28 of postnatal life, and this barrier prevents the passage of macromolecules from the pulp into the predentin and dentin; and (2) this barrier is perturbed following routine restorative procedures in adult animals.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68253/2/10.1177_00220345890680081001.pd

    Spectral Type and Radial Velocity Variations in Three SRC Variables

    SRC variables are M supergiants, precursors to Type II supernovae, that vary in brightness with moderately regular periods of order 100-1000 days. Although identified as pulsating stars that obey their own period-luminosity relation, few have been examined in enough detail to follow the temperature and spectral changes that they undergo during their long cycles. The present study examines such changes for several SRC variables revealed by CCD spectra obtained at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) during 2005-2009, as well as by archival spectra from the DAO (and elsewhere) for some stars from the 1960s to 1980s, and Cambridge radial velocity spectrometer measures for Betelgeuse. Described here is our classification procedure and information on the spectral type and radial velocity changes in three of the stars.
