Time discrimination of impulsive overlapping echos
This paper presents the processing of on acoustic echo built up by a sum of identical replicas of a given emitted
signal; the sum terms have différent amplitude and phase .
The method here presented consists in comparing, in a recurrent way, the envelope and the phase function of the
echo with those of the emitted signal, and then getting the delays and amplitudes of the pulses that made up the echo.Traitement d'un écho acoustique lorsque celui-ci est la somme d'impulsions identiques au signal émis, mais avec une amplitude et un retard différent
Opportunities for CO2 capture through oxygen conducting membranes at medium-scale oxyfuel coal boilers
AbstractEcofys and ECN conducted a study commissioned by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme to identify the most suitable combinations of medium-scale CO2 sources (1–100 MWth) and capture technologies, with respect to potential and costs (see parallel paper by Hendriks et al.). An industrial coal-fired Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler with oxyfuel combustion and Oxygen Conducting Membranes (OCM) appeared to be an economically attractive combination to capture CO2. This paper describes the principle and economic evaluation of this combination in comparison with a reference coal boiler without CO2 capture, as well as a coal boiler with CO2 capture based on amine scrubbing
Environmental Behaviour of Metolachlor and Diuron in a Tropical Soil in the Central Region of Brazil.
The environmental behaviour of metolachlor and diuron was studied in the Central-western region of Brazil, by means of a field study where six experimental plots were installed. The soil was classified as a Latosol, and the soil horizons were characterized. Sorption of metolachlor and diuron was evaluated in laboratory batch experiments. Metolachlor and diuron were applied to the experimental plots on uncultivated soil in October 2003. From this date to March 2004, the following processes were studied: leaching, runoff and dissipation in top soil. Koc of metolachlor varied from 179 to 264 mL g?1 in the soil horizons. Koc of diuron in the Ap horizon was 917 mL g?1, decreasing significantly in the deeper horizons. Field dissipation half-lives of metolachlor and diuron were 18 and 15 days, respectively. In percolated water, metolachlor was detected in concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2.84 ?g L?1. In runoff water and sediment, metolachlor was detected in decreasing concentrations throughout the period of study. Losses of 0.02% and 0.54% of the applied amount by leaching and runoff, respectively, were observed confirming the high mobility of this herbicide in the environment. In percolated water, diuron was detected with low frequency but in relatively high concentrations (up to 6.29 ?g L?1). In runoff water and soil, diuron was detected in decreasing concentrations until 70 days after application, totalizing 13.9% during the whole sampling period. These results show the importance of practices to reduce runoff avoiding surface water contamination by these pesticides, particularly diuron
Central sensitization has major impact on quality of life in patients with axial spondyloarthritis
Introduction: Persistent pain has large potential impact on quality of life (QoL). During the course of the disease, many patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) report persistent pain. Central sensitization (CS) may explain part of this chronic pain. However, the role of CS in relation to QoL has been sparsely studied in axSpA. Therefore, our aim was to explore the relationship between CS and QoL in patients with axSpA. Methods: Consecutive outpatients from the Groningen Leeuwarden axSpA (GLAS) cohort completed the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI; range 0–100) and the AS Quality of Life (ASQoL; range 0–18). Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between CSI and ASQoL scores correcting for potential confounders. Results: Of the 178 included axSpA patients, mean CSI score was 38.0 ± 14.1 and 45% scored ≥40, which indicates a high probability of CS. Mean ASQoL score was 6.0 ± 5.3 and mean ASDASCRP 2.1 ± 1.0. A CSI score ≥40 was significantly associated with higher ASQoL score (mean 9.7 vs. 3.3), higher ASDASCRP (mean 2.6 vs. 1.7), female gender (60% vs. 29%) and more often entheseal involvement (61% vs. 26%). In univariable analysis, CSI score explained a large proportion of the variation in ASQoL (B = 0.06, 95%CI: 0.05–0.07; R2=0.46). This association remained significant after correction for ASDASCRP, gender, entheseal involvement, comorbidities, symptom duration, smoking status, BMI class and educational level (B = 0.04, 95%CI: 0.03–0.05). Conclusion: CS is strongly related to patient-reported QoL in patients with axSpA independently from other patient- and disease-related aspects
Novel compound mutations in the mitochondrial translation elongation factor (TSFM) gene cause severe cardiomyopathy with myocardial fibro-adipose replacement
Primary mitochondrial dysfunction is an under-appreciated cause of cardiomyopathy, especially when cardiac symptoms are the unique or prevalent manifestation of disease. Here, we report an unusual presentation of mitochondrial cardiomyopathy, with dilated phenotype and pathologic evidence of biventricular fibro-adipose replacement, in a 33-year old woman who underwent cardiac transplant. Whole exome sequencing revealed two novel compound heterozygous variants in the TSFM gene, coding for the mitochondrial translation elongation factor EF-Ts. This protein participates in the elongation step of mitochondrial translation by binding and stabilizing the translation elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu). Bioinformatics analysis predicted a destabilization of the EF-Ts variants complex with EF-Tu, in agreement with the dramatic steady-state level reduction of both proteins in the clinically affected myocardium, which demonstrated a combined respiratory chain enzyme deficiency. In patient fibroblasts, the decrease of EF-Ts was paralleled by up-regulation of EF-Tu and induction of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, along with increased expression of respiratory chain subunits and normal oxygen consumption rate. Our report extends the current picture of morphologic phenotypes associated with mitochondrial cardiomyopathies and confirms the heart as a main target of TSFM dysfunction. The compensatory response detected in patient fibroblasts might explain the tissue-specific expression of TSFM-associated disease
Effects of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid on growth, survival, pigmentation and fatty acid composition in Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis) larvae during the Artemia feeding period
We examined the effect of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) on growth, survival, pigmentation and fatty acid composition of Senegal sole larvae using a dose-response design. From 3 to 40 days post hatch (dph), larvae were fed live food that had been enriched using one of four experimental emulsions containing graduated concentrations of EPA and constant docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, ARA). Proportions of EPA in the enriched Artemia nauplii were described as “nil” (EPA-N, 0.5% total fatty acids, TFA), “low” (EPA-L, 10.7% TFA), “medium” (EPA-M, 20.3% TFA) or “high” (EPA-H, 29.5% TFA). Significant differences among dietary treatments in larval length were observed at 25, 30 and 40 dph, and in dry weight at 30 and 40 dph, although no significant correlation could be found between dietary EPA content and growth. The stage of eye migration at 17 and 25 dph was significantly affected by dietary levels of EPA. Significantly lower survival was observed in fish fed EPA-H enriched nauplii. A significantly lower percentage of fish fed EPA-N (82.7%) and EPA-L (82.9%) diets were normally pigmented compared to the fish fed EPA-M (98.1%) and EPA-H (99.4%) enriched nauplii. Tissue fatty acid concentrations reflected the corresponding dietary composition. Arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid levels in all the tissues examined were inversely related to dietary EPA. There was an increase in the proportion of docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3, DPA) in the tissues relative to the diet, which is indicative of chain elongation of EPA. This work concluded that Senegal sole larvae have a very low EPA requirement during the live feeding period
Configuration Complexities of Hydrogenic Atoms
The Fisher-Shannon and Cramer-Rao information measures, and the LMC-like or
shape complexity (i.e., the disequilibrium times the Shannon entropic power) of
hydrogenic stationary states are investigated in both position and momentum
spaces. First, it is shown that not only the Fisher information and the
variance (then, the Cramer-Rao measure) but also the disequilibrium associated
to the quantum-mechanical probability density can be explicitly expressed in
terms of the three quantum numbers (n, l, m) of the corresponding state.
Second, the three composite measures mentioned above are analytically,
numerically and physically discussed for both ground and excited states. It is
observed, in particular, that these configuration complexities do not depend on
the nuclear charge Z. Moreover, the Fisher-Shannon measure is shown to
quadratically depend on the principal quantum number n. Finally, sharp upper
bounds to the Fisher-Shannon measure and the shape complexity of a general
hydrogenic orbital are given in terms of the quantum numbers.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted i
Photoperiod affects the phenotype of mitochondrial complex I mutants
Plant mutants for genes encoding subunits of mitochondrial Complex I (CI, NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase), the first enzyme of the respiratory chain, display various phenotypes depending on growth conditions. Here, we examined the impact of photoperiod, a major environmental factor controlling plant development, on two Arabidopsis thaliana CI mutants: a new insertion mutant interrupted in both ndufs8.1 and ndufs8.2 genes encoding the NDUFS8 subunit, and the previously characterized ndufs4 CI mutant. In long day (LD) condition, both ndufs8.1 and ndufs8.2 single mutants were indistinguishable from Col-0 at phenotypic and biochemical levels, whereas the ndufs8.1 ndufs8.2 double mutant was devoid of detectable holo-CI assembly/activity, showed higher AOX content/activity and displayed a growth-retardation phenotype similar to that of the ndufs4 mutant. Although growth was more affected in ndufs4 than ndufs8.1 ndufs8.2 under short day (SD) condition, both mutants displayed a similar impairment of growth acceleration after transfer to LD as compared to the WT. Untargeted and targeted metabolomics showed that overall metabolism was less responsive to the SD-to-LD transition in mutants than in the WT. The typical LD acclimation of carbon, nitrogen-assimilation and redox-related parameters was not observed in ndufs8.1 ndufs8. Similarly, NAD(H) content, that was higher in SD condition in both mutants than in Col-0, did not adjust under LD. We propose that altered redox homeostasis and NAD(H) content/redox state control the phenotype of Complex I mutants and photoperiod acclimation in Arabidopsis
